Ignore the science and enjoy the story
3 May 2022
The concept of the event and how it is portrayed is impossible. There's no way around it.

However, so is the concept if The Walking Dead and numerous other tv shows - and this is presented in an interesting and engaging manner.

Some of the characters come over as rather "clunky", perhaps due to the dubbed narrative, but all told I enjoyed this and would watch more.

Meteor Moon (2020)

An Asylum film so bad that even The Asylum seem to want to ignore it
15 December 2021
Honestly, just don't.

Every single aspect of this film is trash, and not in the fun, campy way of traditional The Asylum films. I could list details, but it's just simpler to list the good aspects of the film:

1) The poster design.

2) The use of alliteration in the title.

3) ..., nope, that's the lot.

Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020–2024)
10/10
This is true Star Trek hidden inside a cartoon comedy
16 August 2020
From the opening credits, through the visials, the sounds, the animated versions of the classic camera shots and the nature of the story telling, this is a genuine continuation of the 90s-era of Star Trek.

Anybody who is an actual fan of Star Trek will quickly see that there are real Trek stories happening - just off to the left of the stories that we are following instead. The characters, although cartoon exaggerations, are the same type of people that we have seen in supporting roles in classic Trek, and the events shown are, once again, simply exaggerated forms of things that we've seen happen before.

Despite the mobilisation of certain elements to review-bomb the show on here anf Rotten Tomatoes (ironically the same elements that accused CBS of doing just that in relation to positive reviews of previous shows) it is a really enjoyable addition to the Star Trek universe.

Obviously, though, if you can't get past animation or dislike hunour (or Star Trek) this won't be the show for you!

The Orville: About a Girl (2017)
Season 1, Episode 3
10/10
Very strong science fiction, no matter the franchise.
5 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The plot, and execution, of this episode shows that this show is far more than a parody - and that Seth has a deep understanding of the type of writing that made Trek matter back in the day.

The central issues (whether parents have the right to make life changing decisions for their children and gender rights (for starters)) were dealt with in a mature, sensible and engaging way - without feeling "preachy".

An excellent episode, where the cast and crew of the USS Orville finally get to earn the right to stand beside those of the USS Enterprise as equals in narrative.

Zoo (2015–2017)

Great - if you think that Sharknado is a bit too highbrow.

Warning: Spoilers
In the very first episode, I was amused when they forgot to hide a camera tower that was visible in the middle of the frame as the main characters have run for their lives. I then discovered that that was the least of this shows issues.

Somehow, though, this is like some sort of slow-moving car crash that you simply cannot stop looking at and wondering if it could actually get any worse.

The first plot line (fly around randomly and find the cure for animal mutations while being attacked by animals and baddies) is resolved - only for it to be rebooted with an almost exact repeat of the same plot, but with a slightly different motivation (fly around randomly and find the cure for human sterility while being attacked by animals and baddies). Seems like the next reboot will be to fly around and find the cure for the zombie, mutant animals.

Literally nothing on the show makes sense. Main characters repeatedly fail to take simple actions to solve problems (like not shooting the baddie between the eyes before saving the magically- restored-to- life son character). They fly in an airliner that seems to be made of stronger plot armour than Iron Man.

So, the plot is unimportant. The characters do not inspire loyalty or pathos. The special effects are straight from 1989 (or The Asylum - same thing really). The acting is more wooden than Thunderbirds. Yet it continues, while shows like Dark Matter get canceled. And I keep watching it. Wondering why, but unable to walk away.

The Orville: If the Stars Should Appear (2017)
Season 1, Episode 4
8/10
Not perfect, but very strong entry.
3 October 2017
Although the subject matter is not "never seen", if science fiction was restricted to only cover ground that no show or book had previously covered, it would be a dead genre.

The story develops well, and is told in a way that makes sense. The humour mostly fits in with the plot, and does not damage the narrative. The episode characters are relatable and realistic - and the final scenes do carry emotional weight.

All told, a good continuation of a series that is going far deeper than most expected.

Martian Land (2015 Video)
6/10
Low budget, but not deserving of the contempt being shown.
23 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This film is in the tradition of The Asylum's mock-busters, but is taking a very different tack to the film that has inspired it. For a low budget production, especially one from this production house, the effects are not actually all that bad - certainly watchable. The acting is also, whilst not perfect, far from terrible.

The plot is fairly predictable, using the usual "family vs environmental disaster with long car chase" format employed in a lot of this company's work but the end result is certainly watchable and fairly enjoyable in an non-challenging way.

This is the level that The Asylum should be aiming for more of its low-budget productions - before then aiming a bit higher if possible.
