Man of Steel (2013)
7/10
A mind blowing, near perfect reboot.
25 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This was a pretty amazing film! Grand scope, mind blowing visuals and special effects, the music, emotion and feeling of this film was maxed out! Definitely the best reboot of the Superman franchise ever to grace the movie screen!

So that's all the "popcorn" stuff out of the way… Well… This film IS special, deluxe popcorn… And so, if popcorn is what you're after, I seriously doubt this film will disappoint you!

It's over the top in some places… Perhaps some of the best visual CGI visuals I've ever seen since Avatar. But Avatar it is not! Sorry to some of you fan boys (and girls!) out there, but it's pretty thin on character development. The "love" story was a total waste of time… Perhaps this is something that might get developed in possible sequels but, yeah… I don't really know why they bothered with it to be honest.

So, weak character development is one chink in this amazing film's armour. Another is the sheer amount of destruction in this film in which human casualties become non existent. Sure, they really wanted to ratchet up the WOW factor in this film… And they did! It's just that it didn't really feel realistic seeing whole sky-scrappers get trashed yet "Big S" loses it when Zod tries to vaporise a small handful of people.

Perhaps I nit pick… This IS after-all an epic, deluxe, popcorn film but, it would have been deeper and darker to look, more closely, at the Human angle as powerful God like beings go toe-to-toe as cities gets blown to bits.

Further authenticity gets abandoned in that Earth only manages to rally a small force against the biggest threat to it since the asteroid which wiped out the dinosaurs. Hell, we don't even get to see the President or other world leaders.

To be honest, this film was really all about Superman. Other characters, other human beings and indeed the World itself merely provided a backdrop to tell this grand story of him coming to terms with his past and his own "humanity". And even though parts of this backdrop got completely obliterated, the aftermath or consequences of Superman's epic battles are left, forgotten.

So sure, on an intellectual level, this film is quite weak. It is also emotionally weak too. We only really get to explore Superman's point of view, although I did find his origins on Krypton to be a little touching.

I guess the creators of this reboot really wanted to focus on blowing our brains out with amazing visuals. Perhaps, if sequels get made, we may get to see other aspects.

Finally, the music in this film was deep! Mr Hans Zimmer has done it again!!!

So there you go… This film is epic visually and auditorily, with insane, over-the-top action sequences that will blow out your mind. But ultimately, as a deluxe popcorn film, try not to think too hard on some of the logic in this film. Just sit back and marvel at this amazing reboot! All two and a half hours of it!

Prometheus (I) (2012)
7/10
An ambitious effort that didn't quite work in places...
7 June 2012
OK… So yeah, this was a film that I must admit; I've been literally dying to see ever since I heard the name "Prometheus" being whispered around in quiet corners of the movie world. Ridley Scott is a director in the heavy weight division and his films have stood the test of time… And of course, Alien and Aliens (the others are not even worth mentioning!) have attained legendary status among most sci-fi fans so, it was with great anticipation when I finally got to see this film…

OK… The Good… As is the case these days with modern films chock full with special effects, the CGI, visuals and camera shots were all very impressive. It is quite simply, a visual treat and, some of the more gory bits may leave some of you with a weak disposition to watch those scenes firmly behind your trembling hands!

The tension was simply no where near as intense as Alien or Aliens. Sure, there was some tension but, given the 15 age rating you could sense that they had to play some of that down.

The acting? Well… Nothing special. This was a bit of a shame! Apart from a good performance from Noomi Rapace, that was it really! A few good wise cracks from some of the supporting cast but, nothing notable comes to mind considering I just watched the film just over an hour ago. In short, the dialogue, acting, wise cracks etc was simply no where near that found in Aliens.

The story? Well now, this is when things got messy… Without giving anything away just be prepared to get very confused in places! You will go away from this film with a LOT of unanswered questions. Perhaps too many. But then, Ridley is obviously trying to whet our appetites for more upcoming films and boy, he's left a crap load of loose ends to tie up! So, take this point as you will… Is leaving the movie theatre with more questions than answers a good thing? Then you're in for a treat. Otherwise you will get frustrated period or get frustrated waiting for the next instalment(s).

There were a couple of very weak twists in the story which the astute amongst you will quickly work out in no time. So, apart from the premise of this film with regards to the Big Question, it's totally non-taxing on the brain… Well… It IS the 21st century after all!

Personally, it would have been nice to have gotten some concrete answers but I guess Ridley hasn't quite finished with us yet!

The action? Not much. And what was there was a bit silly in certain places. You want action? Stick with Aliens!

OK… So in a nutshell, no this film is NOT Alien or Aliens. In some ways it's not even close. Not necessarily a bad thing but then one has to ask, is it a good film on its own merits? Well here it's a very mixed bag. Some things simply just didn't work, unless Ridley intends to resolve such matters in later films. So perhaps some patience is required. Some will undoubtedly pour scorn on this and some will be eager for more films… I think this is pretty much where the battle lines for fans and trolls of this movie alike will be drawn over the next few months. However, overall, not a bad film but it's not great either… Assuming that Ridley gets his wish to make more films, I guess we will all have to simply wait and see how this new take on the Alien franchise will play out.

But it has to be said… I for one am intrigued!

Bourne is definitely the new Bond!
19 August 2007
Geez... I just saw this movie last night, and it's been a long, LONG while since I've been totally griped by a film for 2 ('ish) hours.

From the get go this movie is in overdrive. But don't worry… It's far from your usual mindless romp of an action movie. It's intelligent, sharp, efficient, and the way it has a docu-dramatized feel to it, makes it gritty and believable.

I saw the first film, long, long ago and I thought it was a kool movie. I didn't actually get around to see the second one, but from what I hear, Ultimatum appears to be the best out of the three and believe me, this could well be the best film of 2007.

Matt Damon is excellent as the lead and I'm sure the obvious comparisons between him and the new Bond man (Daniel Craig) will continue to be made. In my opinion, both actors play the role of new, contemporary gritty, tough guy well. But to me, Matt has the edge. I suppose it's his (slightly) younger age. And the obvious lack of those legendary Bond clichés of suave women, megalomaniacs, and the deeply entrenched upper class echelons of the British MI6 and of course those ridiculous gadgets (I mean, that "invisible" car in Die Another Day, was just plain nuts).

No… Matt Damon is like a slimmed down, "pure" version of contemporary Bond.

Asides from the power and energy of Matt however, don't be fooled into thinking that means the rest of the films' characters are weak. Far from it. I'll admit there isn't much of a Human touch in the film, as signified by the cold, professional divide between the characters, especially between Bourne and his female sidekick played by Julia Stiles (but to be honest, I think Stiles was probably DEAD in this film anyway, so perhaps sparking ANY relationship with her character was a non-starter!). Sure, there was the odd crack and fragility in Bourne, but this is a gritty film… It feels "real". And as we know, in the real world, people usually are quite cold and distant, especially in this day and age.

No… The other characters were great and all complemented the film well. From the deadly, terminator like assassins assigned to take Bourne out, to the shadowy scheming CIA special operatives planning strategies and tactics in front of an array satellite feeds and virtual computer screens.

The War, if indeed there is a war between Bourne and Bond, is far from over. The new Bond is definitely going in the right direction in comparison to its predecessors. Dare I say, Bond is becoming more "Bourne" like, so it remains to be seen who wins out in the end.

Casino Royale was good. Definitely the best Bond film to come out in a long, LONG time. But given the open-ended ending of Ultimatum, its creators may well be planning to take Bond on and believe me, they've fired a pretty damaging salvo into the Bond franchise with this one.

Bourne IS the new Bond!

Inside Man (2006)
9/10
A Cool Bank Heist Thriller with Balls!!!
25 March 2006
It's been a while since I've seen a really good movie and without a doubt, 'Inside Man', fits that bill perfectly.

I was half expecting a film in the guise of the Usual Suspects / The Negotiator / Your Usually Run Of The Mill Good Guy Verses Bad Guy Ilk… But as the various film synopses indicates, not all is what it seems and the multiple twists and counter-twists to this film, although seen before in other films, still manages to retain a sense of originality.

However, one thing this film is really great in and, I suppose, adds to its uniqueness if I can put it like that, is that it DOESN'T take itself too seriously. There are plenty of some truly funny moments in this film, which in no way diminishes the tension that runs throughout. In fact, I would describe this film as a Black Comedy / Crime / Mystery / Thriller… Although there is some drama in this film, to me it was perhaps its weakest point.

Not that that is necessarily a bad thing. Be prepared for a mixed bag of goodies, in which most if not all aspects are played out well. The characters are… well characters aren't really that important in this film save that of Denzel Washington's. He's excellent as the bamboozled detective, always one step behind Clive Owen's cool, calculating and clever 'villain'. But even though you may think this makes him the underdog, it doesn't. Without giving the plot away, rest assured that the good guys win and the 'bad' guys…. Well… It's best you checked that out for yourself.

As for the other main characters, they do well to keep the movie interesting and moving at a good pace. Jodie puts in an effective performance as a shrewd negotiator, Chiwetel Ejiofor complements Denzel's character well, especially in the humour stakes and Dafoe, although underused in my opinion, does his best as a SWAT operative, which to be honest, doesn't really give him much to play with in this low action flick. But to be honest, action and in depth characterization isn't the main focus of this film. Not that it needs it mind. It's cool, funny, entertaining and does exactly what it says on the tin.

As I mentioned earlier with regards to humour, Spike is using some of that dark humour that runs through this film to make his political points. Of course, latent issues of racism are addressed, but don't worry, they're not rammed down your throats and the fact that he's using comedy to, as it were, sweeten the pill, you'll be entertained at least if not informed. Without going into details, be prepared to witness a surreal, bloody hilarious but highly poignant outlook on ultra violent video games and the effect it has on young minds and of course, the post 9-11 sense of paranoia currently in America that seems to indicate that all people from HUGE swaths of the Asian continent, are somehow bomb-wielding suicidal Arabs.

Actually, just like is darker, more excessive film 'Bamboozled', Spike seems to be using humour more frequently to make his political points, poke fun at his ultra right-wing bigoted enemies, whilst giving his liberal allies a right laugh. And based on the seeming success of this film, lets hope that this continues.

Well done Spike. This film, if nothing else, should at least silence the critics that accuse you of only making films that are serious and / or deal with racial issues… Actually Spike, you did make a film which tentatively dealt with some of those issues… You just did it in a thoroughly entertaining way… BRAVO!!! Thoroughly Entertaining 9 / 10.

Doom (2005)
6/10
A Bit Of A Wasted Opportunity
15 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I've been a Doom fan since the early 90's and having played and enjoyed the latest incarnation of Doom on the PC, Doom 3, which was released last year, I was very excited when I heard this film was coming out.

Doom the film is based on the Doom 3 PC game, where you get to play a tough nameless marine, who battles for his life against extra-dimensional entities (demons to you and me) as an experiment in 'matter teleportation' on Mars goes awry.

To be honest, this film as a game cross-over doesn't quite fit the scenario of the original game, which I believe, had an excellent plot. I understand that films don't necessarily have to correspond 100% with the book or game it's based upon, but the way I see it, if you have a great book or game, then why change its format when it comes to the film? Sure, perhaps film budgets are a factor, but when you get excellent cross-over films like Lord Of The Rings, then as far as I'm concerned, cross-over films should try and mimic the original art as much as possible.

This is my main, focal gripe with Doom the film. The PC game, on which it's based, had an excellent plot. With interesting characters, lots and LOTS of intense tension and action, coupled with a constant fear of dread as one battled demonic entities…. Only to be faced with even more terrifying ones. As for the film, sure, you got your typical wacky characters, so no problem there. There were some tense moments too (only at the beginning) but as for the rest of it, (SPOILER ALERT!!!) the so called demons….??? There weren't any!!! As a player of the game, the demons were the REAL stars of the show. They scared the living s**t out of you. So, naturally, as someone who knows quite a bit about the game, I was tense in the first hour or so, simply because I thought the demons were coming. However, as time passes, and the true nature of the threat on Mars is revealed, that tension dissipates, the excitement wanes and you're left with nothing but a mindless action film.

I think this is a real shame. Doom the film has no real sense of depth despite the excellent game series, whose sole purpose was the scare the heck out of you. However, on a positive note, the action sequences are good, the CGI (which could have been a LOT better in places) is adequate, the characters are passable and the tension level at the beginning was intense… But I'm guessing it was only intense because of the anticipation of facing some truly terrifying CGI demons later on in the film.

However, thanks to that failing Hollywood machine, that always seems to put dollars way above art, Doom failed on those expectations. I'm pretty sure a lot of game enthusiasts will also be disappointed with the films much deviated plot and those who are unfamiliar with the game, will probably see this film as merely an exercise in mindless CGI driven action.

A real shame really. But perhaps given the current and disturbing evangelical movement in America, as well as Hollywood's obsession with money and indifference to art, a dark, truly terrifying film about battling demons on Mars, really had NO chance of being brought to our screens, hence this much dumbed down version.

Bitter Moon (1992)

A VERY tragic story about broken love...
2 February 2005
Warning: Spoilers
WOW...

This is without doubt one of the most HUMAN films I have ever seen.

A totally gripping and tragic tale of Fools falling in Love... Only to fall out of it again... TRAGICALLY...

I'm a man, who is NOT afraid to admit that he cried at the end of this film... It was THAT moving... And I'm guessing that if you are one that feels... Or has felt... REAL emotion in your life... Then you'll be moved by this movie too... Perhaps to tears.

The performances are excellent... Perfectly portraying the complexities, contradictions and 'perversions'... If one can call it that... Of the Human heart and spirit.

I seriously felt ashamed to be a man!!! And for once, a movie has made me really think what it must have been like to be a woman who is hopelessly in love with a total bast**d!!! I've never seen so many broken, sad and confused characters in one film before... And the interplay between them is moving and captivating...

Be warned however... This is a serious movie about love, lust and obsession. It is VERY dark on the emotional level, and has NO happy endings... A bit like REAL life perhaps...? So, if you are not yet emotionally mature and have not yet had your heart broken... Or have yet to break any hearts yourself (which is where I'm coming from... Yes, I AM ashamed!!!)... Then I don't think this film is for you...

This film is SO far removed from your usual Hollywood bulls**t, in that it depicts REAL Human emotions on a non superficial level... So stay well clear if you're just looking for a movie to chill out to...

You won't chill out to this one... It sucks you in, bleeds you dry and shatters that age old myth that 'Love Conquers All'...

'Cos take it from me... As this film shows... Love is FAR from perfect...

It's NOT a great movie... But given its very moving emotional content and realism on the portrayal of Human Beings...

I give it 9 / 10.

Don't believe the Hype!!!
23 January 2005
Mmmm...

To be honest, I am very much my own man...

I don't follow trends... I don't believe the Hype!!! Just because a billion people say a film is good might not necessarily mean that I will follow suit...

So this opinion is VERY much my own...

To start off with, I've NEVER been much of a Shyamalan fan.

Now before you start to curse me... I DID think that the Sixth Sense was one of the BEST movies I have ever seen. Well directed, well acted... A totally beautiful, moving and sometimes frightening film.

But what is happening here... I think... Is some kind of Director's Ego Syndrome...

Shyamalans other films, including this one, have been crap... Let's face it. Perhaps his name pulls in the crowds... A bit like what a Spielberg film or a Woody Allen film would do (notice how Shyamalans' name is portrayed on the film's title). A desperate measure methinks, 'cos this movie is bad... Really bad.

Now... I don't mind being tricked... Shyamalan tricked me with the Sixth Sense... It's cool... It was a damn good movie and I enjoyed the twist at the end.

But now he seems obsessed with tricking us at EVERY opportunity!!! To the point of ridiculousness.

I'm sorry... I don't mind having plots twisted on me but I don't like being tricked just for the sake of being tricked.

I would NOT be complaining if the film was any good... But it ain't. It's bad... Slow... Laborious... AND finally... Ultimately... Ridiculous!!!

This film is for Shyamalan fans only... Perhaps he knows his fans go to his movies NOT to enjoy them as such, but to try and work out the FINAL TWIST at the end... A sick game of director cat and naive film audience mouse!!!

I'm sorry... But next time another Shyamalan film comes out... I for one will not buy into its hype!!!

The Grudge (2004)
Really eerie new 'Japan' school horror film.
23 January 2005
You know it's nice right now to know Hollywood is moving some of its usual horror genres into a new direction.

To be honest, I grew tired of horror flicks which seemed hell bent on dispatching young hormonal teenagers in a myriad of brutal ways...

Usually in a bath of blood and gore...

Having spent a LOT of money at the movie theatre and on DVD rentals, watching movies like 'Final Destination', 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', 'My Little Eye', 'Jeepers Creepers' etc etc... I grew really bored with it all...

Sure... A lot of the ladies in those films were nice eye candy... You got the odd fright here and there... But ultimately, there was no sense of spookiness or eeriness to those films... Just lots of cheap, blood fuelled frights...

And when it comes to horror, I'd rather be scared outta my mind than be shocked in a maelstrom of blood, guts and body parts...

'The Grudge', and films like it, like 'The Ring', is a breath of fresh air for the horror film industry.

The fact that they have a foreign feel to them... I.e. a Japanese one, makes them feel more authentic than your usually Hollywood manufactured crap.

I can only hope that this trend continues... 'Cos this film was one of the scariest I've ever seen.

In fact, I really didn't even watch it properly... My shaking and highly stressed hands kept getting in the way!!! Very Spooky film!!!

White Chicks (2004)
8/10
One of the funniest movies I've seen in a LONG while...
23 January 2005
Man...

What IS going on??? I just checked out 'White Chicks' on DVD recently and thought that it was such a FUNNY movie, I'll check out what you guys thought of it...

Why oh why did you guys give it such a LOW score??? Thanks to 9-11, have we human beings forgotten how to laugh at ourselves again??? Has our species become SOOO wound up and up tight that humour... black humour, has become an ugly, evil and twisted concept??? I don't know what is going on over The Pond (I am a U.K. citizen), but I'm sorry, you Yanks;... 'cos I'm pretty sure Yanks gave it the overall low score, have quite simply lost your sense of humours.

A real shame... Here, in the U.K., we HAVE to laugh... NEED to laugh...

And I guess that's pretty evident, given the fact that U.K. comedy shows like 'The Office' and 'Little Britain' are taking the U.S. by storm...

C'mon guys... It's OK to laugh... believe me.

And with regards to the so called 'racism'.... Pllllleeeaaassseeeee!!! As far as I can tell... The Wayan brothers are both Black. They rip into BOTH black and white cultures... Sure... It ain't PC, or intellectual or political... But hey... It's called a COMEDY...

You know... Like back in the days when Eddy Murphy gave us the BRILLIANT, totally un-PC, 'Trading Places'...

God... I DREAD to think what you Yanks would have given THAT comedy classic in THIS day and age...

Please people... The World may be going down the tubes... There IS a LOT to moan and complain about... But if we really lose our sense of humours, then we really might as well call it a day NOW... Rather than later...

As for my rating... 9 / 10...

So... If you STILL have your sense of humour intact... Check this film out... You'll laugh your pants off!!!

I, Robot (2004)
A harmless romp...
22 August 2004
Okay...

Well, first up, this film is your usually 'Big Willy' CGI summer blockbuster...

Next question... Is it any good???

It's alright... Nothing special... Unless you consider CGI special... Because in that area, I Robot has some of the best special effects I've ever seen. A kind of 'one up' on Star Wars II - Attack Of The Clones.

The plot, although simple, is... again... alright. And, I suppose, unlike his usual summer blockbusters, at least we get to see a 'serious' side to Will Smith's acting abilities... But to be honest, given the premise of the film; 'cute' robots being subservient to human beings via the so called Three Laws,... It IS a little difficult to take that sense of seriousness seriously... Sorry Will!!!

This film could have been, should have been a lot darker... But then, it wouldn't be a summer, 'Big Willy' production now would it??? So, this one is definitely for the kids... Whom I'm sure will love this film...

For us serious Sci-Fi fans... Don't take it too seriously... It's a fun, light... not heavy, Sci-Fi romp... And the CGI is excellent.

Score: 7 / 10

Solaris (2002)
10/10
A highly spiritual, highly moving Sci-Fi love story...
11 August 2004
I can see why a lot of people have problems with this film... It's VERY ambiguous... Mysterious... Dreamlike... Etc etc...

So, to cut to the chase, you'll either love it or hate it...

I think it's one of the best Sci-Fi's I've ever seen... And I've seen quite a few. It's pretty unique in its own way... A kind of dreamy, romantic 2001.

You won't really get this film... I think that is its biggest appeal. It's truly mysterious and un-defined... But to be totally honest, isn't Space, real Space, like that???

Who knows what kind of forces exists out there in the Void... Who knows their true nature...? This film captures that sense of the Great Unknown and twists it into a very moving love story, which revolves around George Clooney's character and his dead wife (the beautiful Natascha McElhone).

And at the centre of this film... Solaris... A place, an entity, an alien artifact, a space-time anomaly... Who knows...?

To be honest, I've yet to work out 2001 and 2010... I've yet to read the books which might, perhaps, give me further insights, but those films are still very mysterious to me... That's why I love them...

The same goes for this film... If you're one of those people who doesn't mind being faced with more questions than answers... Then check this beautiful film out... You WON'T be disappointed...

If on the other hand, you're one of those people who wants, no NEEDS an answer to absolutely EVERYTHING... Then stay well away...

Remember, Space is BIG... And holds more questions than we can EVER hope to answer... So embrace the mystery, don't be afraid of it...

Another wasted opportunity...
11 August 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Ah... Star Trek, Star Trek...

Great TV shows... Although I still await Enterprise to shine... IF indeed it ever does... But the movies of late leave a LOT to be desired...

This latest series in the Star Trek franchise only has one good thing going for it (as usually)... A pretty, visually spectacular, starship battle scene between Picard and his nemesis (don't wanna spoil who his nemesis actually is).

But, it seems, the WHOLE movie is geared simply to drive this one scene... Because aside from that particular encounter, there isn't much left to chew on here...

It's a real shame... The only 'next generation' Star Trek movie that was worth its salt, was First Contact. A film which really brought home the Roddenberry vision of a wondrous age for man... excuse me, humankind… Oh, and the Borg were cool too (as always!!!).

The rest, including this one, seem to be more concerned in blasting us away with amazing special effects... But doing so with very thin plots...

I really wanted to like this movie... I really did... But I tire of 'special effects only' movies, which have proliferated over the past decade or so...

I really thought they had something special here... A truly dark, moody, deep film... On par with the excellent Contact, but alas no.

They were far too ambitious and then again, they weren't... And they introduced a lot of weird concepts like (SPOILER ALERT!) Data's 'retarded brother'. And I can NEVER forgive the writers for doing what they did to poor Data!!!

I know, I know... They probably wanted to make the darkest Star Trek movie yet, but it was way too narrow... Intense in some ways perhaps, but intense and narrow.

They could have expanded upon the enmity that existed between the Romulan Star Empire and The Federation… They could have introduced more interesting characters to give the film a more wider, grander scope… Instead, we're left with this claustrophobic struggle between Picard and the bad guy…

All the other interesting characters of the Enterprises' crew, may as well have been props on the set as far as this film is concerned.

Don't get me wrong however... It's not a bad movie... The effects are truly mind blowing and you can feel the tension building, especially when you know that those reclusive, technologically advanced bad boy Romulans are involved...

But then the tension fades with this and that discovery (again, don't want to give too much away) and, coupled with some bizarre scenes, you're just left with the special effects...

Nemesis is in the same mold as Generations (bizarre and over the top) and Insurrection (political correctness goes boldly where it has not gone before), in that both films were packed with amazing special effects, but had thin, simplistic plots and at times, ran off into strange tangents.

A shame really... Because due to all the negative publicity that this latest film has received... Coupled with the flimsy and weak appeal of the TV series Enterprise... We may well have seen the last of the Star Trek movies. The current makers and shakers of the Star Trek franchise, have to try and come up with new, fresh, and exciting ideas if Gene Roddenberry's appealing vision is to survive at all.

I suspect, just like in other questionable projects such as the current Star Wars trilogy and the last two Matrix films, that true art and creativity is still being destroyed in favour of shunting the next revolutionary CGI to the movie screen, in the hope that we, the audience, will make those Hollywood bean counters happy.

When will those suits EVER learn that, special effects alone does not a great movie make...
