This was a pretty amazing film! Grand scope, mind blowing visuals and special effects, the music, emotion and feeling of this film was maxed out! Definitely the best reboot of the Superman franchise ever to grace the movie screen!
So that's all the "popcorn" stuff out of the way Well This film IS special, deluxe popcorn And so, if popcorn is what you're after, I seriously doubt this film will disappoint you!
It's over the top in some places Perhaps some of the best visual CGI visuals I've ever seen since Avatar. But Avatar it is not! Sorry to some of you fan boys (and girls!) out there, but it's pretty thin on character development. The "love" story was a total waste of time Perhaps this is something that might get developed in possible sequels but, yeah I don't really know why they bothered with it to be honest.
So, weak character development is one chink in this amazing film's armour. Another is the sheer amount of destruction in this film in which human casualties become non existent. Sure, they really wanted to ratchet up the WOW factor in this film And they did! It's just that it didn't really feel realistic seeing whole sky-scrappers get trashed yet "Big S" loses it when Zod tries to vaporise a small handful of people.
Perhaps I nit pick This IS after-all an epic, deluxe, popcorn film but, it would have been deeper and darker to look, more closely, at the Human angle as powerful God like beings go toe-to-toe as cities gets blown to bits.
Further authenticity gets abandoned in that Earth only manages to rally a small force against the biggest threat to it since the asteroid which wiped out the dinosaurs. Hell, we don't even get to see the President or other world leaders.
To be honest, this film was really all about Superman. Other characters, other human beings and indeed the World itself merely provided a backdrop to tell this grand story of him coming to terms with his past and his own "humanity". And even though parts of this backdrop got completely obliterated, the aftermath or consequences of Superman's epic battles are left, forgotten.
So sure, on an intellectual level, this film is quite weak. It is also emotionally weak too. We only really get to explore Superman's point of view, although I did find his origins on Krypton to be a little touching.
I guess the creators of this reboot really wanted to focus on blowing our brains out with amazing visuals. Perhaps, if sequels get made, we may get to see other aspects.
Finally, the music in this film was deep! Mr Hans Zimmer has done it again!!!
So there you go This film is epic visually and auditorily, with insane, over-the-top action sequences that will blow out your mind. But ultimately, as a deluxe popcorn film, try not to think too hard on some of the logic in this film. Just sit back and marvel at this amazing reboot! All two and a half hours of it!
