Himmerland (2008)

What a surprise!!
23 February 2007
Saw this movie at a test screening and it was one of those films that keeps you guessing until the end. I really enjoyed the mix of English and Danish as well. It seemed quite natural, since we here in Denmark are used to English in our everyday life.

Nicolai Coaster Waldau, Zlatko Buric and the lead actor James Barclay were all very good. The two girls were not quite as good, but not bad. Overall it was a pleasant surprise to what I was expecting. It was very different than most Danish movies, and we need more of that. And I know that the people behind Himmerland had very little money, and yet this film looked better than most of Denmark's "big budget" movies.

I would be very curious as to why that is. How could a film like this one that cost less than 1 million kroner look so much better than films that cost 20 times as much??? Someone needs to hire the director here! He has some secret the other directors in Denamrk need to learn!! I give this film 8 out of 10 stars. And I recommend it to those people who enjoy watching movies where you can't predict the ending after the first 10 minutes!

enjoyable

Major gaping plot holes aside, it's been a long while since I enjoyed myself so much at the cinema. If you're okay with turning your brain off and accepting a film such as this for what it is - guns, explosions and snappy one liners - then I can recommend it.

Pitt is maturing as an actor and I'm beginning to like him more and more. Not that he's in danger of winning an Oscar anytime soon, but he's not just another pretty face anymore. He had a lot of nice moments, so did Jolie, but I had a hard time accepting her as a character in this film. Can't put my finger on why, though.

As well, I felt a little disappointed when I walked out of the theater saying "geez, a film I actually don't feel I wasted money on".

Where have all the good films gone? Is there any hope that the ratio of 10 bad films to every good one ever going to rectify itself? Is it my imagination or has recent cinema gone extremely down hill?
