They Live in the Grey (2022)
It's not Bad, just longer than it needs to be.
I could be wrong but this film is suffering from a lack of editing. It feels like it's intentional. Trying to be more psychological in its pacing, but it's actually just taking a really long time to achieve something that it doesn't achieve. It's not bad, it's just treating the story as if it's wholly original in concept. It's not. The first hour can be summed up in 20 minutes max. If it started from there, Probably a 6.5 (7)/10.
The Harder They Fall (2021)
Immaculate Artistry! Never mind the heartbroken racists reviews!
After seeing how bad this film got review bombed, I had no choice but to respond. Everything about this film is Immaculate. The Directing, writing, acting, pace (it didn't feel like 2 hours +), and cinematography. Then there's the soundtrack, which is absolutely breathtaking.
I know it scares some people to see a predominantly black cast of main characters, but if you are one of these people, put your love of film first! Otherwise, why even participate in this site?
I watched this film last night and was absolutely blown away. I have been looking for a new Western to enjoy recently and this satiated my hunger. Please watch the film, for the art, the experience, and the master craft of artistic expression. I'm going to go watch it again!
Fatman (2020)
A New Christmas ritual! Grinches tanking the rating>:(
This movie is not only one hell of a premise but executed in a way that I didn't think it could be. It grounds Santa in realism while keeping the mystical aspects which shouldn't even be possible. Each character and their motivations are ironed out and detailed, making everything about what transpires come off as genuine. Every actor is on point. There is no reason this movie should have below a 7 unless you're literally punishing creativity. Make this movie your new Christmas ritual.
The Empty Man (2020)
First 10 minutes 7/10 for horror, the last 2hrs, 2/10...
The beginning of this movie has amazing setup and execution with sound design choices that really heighten suspense and horror.
The moment this movie's opening is over, all magic seems to drain from the film as every trope is shoehorned in, deflating almost every aspect that was done masterfully just moments prior. It's really sad because I had heard quite a bit about the cult following this movie was garnering as a victim of the Fox/Disney merger....but no. Absolutely not.
I will always praise someone who achieves making a movie because it's very hard work and takes a near miracle to pull off. So understanding that...I applaud. However, this film was not good. It could've been. The potential was there.
Destroyer (2018)
Don't like crime dramas? Then don't watch.
I feel like most of these reviewers with low scores just don't like dramas. It has action, great story telling, character building and amazing acting to go along with it. If you like movies, you'll like/love this film. If you like action movies only....this isn't for you.
Cosmos (2019)
This movie is terrible...
I'm a huge fan of single location films, and movies that build intrigue and mastery through carefully crafted dialogue, character building, and beats that make the single location format not seem arduous, stale, and a testament of personal fortitude. I say all of that to say that this movie did none of those things well. None!
The music is more epic than anything that happens on screen and ultimately makes even the climax seem cheesy and hokey.
The first hour of the film could've been cut by at least 80% and I'm being generous.
The character building is overshadowed by terrible dialogue.
The camera work of matching gazes makes it feel even more cheesy.
I imagine that there's someone somewhere who is getting their rocks off to this film simply from a love of science, but if they are honest with themselves....this movie is just bad. I had hopes it wouldn't be, but it's a love letter to someone's time at space camp and the friends they made while there.
That's not a bad thing....just not a good movie.
At the end of the day...if the budget for this film was truthfully $7k , I still would at least commend them on making a movie.
Boss Level (2020)
The opening credits make it look terrible....
This movie is way better and funnier than it has any right to be. It is a must watch action comedy play on groundhogs day and A great performance by everyone involved.
Wrath of Man (2021)
Highbrow classy action.
This had way more class and storytelling than I expected. This is a great watch! Action and a story!
Chaos Walking (2021)
It's the ending...
If you're like me and you watch this movie thinking...."what was all the negative word of mouth about, I'm intrigued!"....it's because of the ending. You either hate it, or you excuse it and say "it was okay".
I'd say watch it and see where you fall.
Bliss (2021)
6 but possibly an 8! It depends...
If this film is to be taken at face value and the sci fi is actually real. It's a middling/average film but entertaining.
However,
If this entire film is actually about someone suffering from Mania and struggling with mental health and the sci fi is actually just a representation of his manic episodes (there are pieces that hint at this), it's a solid 8.
I can't make up my mind if I figured it out, or if I'm merely searching for meaning. Guess it's up to you now...
Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)
I wish I knew who directed before watching...
A couple of reviews have nailed everything that is wrong with this movie (which is everything!), but to be specific....
1. Actors in this film, who I know are better than this, somehow forgot how to act.
2. Story is base level smooth brain and predictable.
3. The editing is garbage.
4. Cinematography ughhh.
5. If all you want is Gore and absolutely nothing else, I guess this movie will work for you.
Finally:
This was such a tragedy that I needed to know who directed it after I watched it, and honestly, it all made sense. This is the same director who did REPO: Genetic rock opera, years ago. That movie was just as offensively terrible. I rated this film a 2 because it at least was a film, technically. In my heart and mind, it's a -10.
