Things We Lost in the Fire (2007)
Mainstream Weepie hit.
Halle Berry's first dramatic role since Monster's Ball proves that this actress can still cut it in between the comic book adaptations that she is more well known for.Likewise Bencio Del Toro gives a superb performance as the bleary eyed junkie jerry Sunborn in perhaps his best part since 21 grams. The story evolves around Halle Berry as Audrey who's husband (David Duchovny) was killed during a needless act of violence leaving her to bring up the two children alone. Del Toro was her husband's best friend who is a recovering addict and looking to start his life afresh. This one incident brings the two together in a very intense, raw and emotional way as both look to try and achieve some sense of normality back in their lives. This movie may not be to everyone's taste as it's a slow burner but for those looking for great character development then look no further. "Does it feel like your in a sad movie" whispers one of the kids to Del Toro. No-- But I know when I'm watching one.
Beyond Borders (2003)
the guilt complex
Having just sat down and watched this on DVD , i can't seem to decide if this is meant to be a taut political thriller or a good old fashioned war torn romance. Being the latter i think is only in there to spice up a very dull movie ( However, the chemistry between Angelina and Clive does tick over nicely )that does tug at the heartstrings and make you feel extremely guilty of having that whopping 51" projection set with DTS Sound whilst people are starving in the world. Clive Owens performance is good but not enough to merit him becoming the next James Bond as there is an awful amount of swearing from him in this film, although i believe those are real tears when he talks about a child. The action switches courses over about 11 years from Ethopia (USA for Africa anyone!!!) to Checyna with a love interest thrown in. Overall, worth viewing for Angelina fans as she basically does her real life thing of UN Goodwill Ambassador, but with the some of the action scenes you can't help thinking this could have been Tomb Raider 3:Beyond Borders. Another question: How does Angelina fit into and drive a Mini ??? 5/10
Willard (2003)
Not too bad..
If ever Crispin Glover needed a decent role then this was tailor made for him. After refusing to work on BTTF 3 and a terrible performance in Charlies Angels, i got the feeling that he thought too high and mighty of himself. But at last a role that he plays superbly as the victim of constant harassment at work who seeks revenge by taming and using the rats in his basement that he was supposed to get rid of. You can't help but feel sympathy for him ( I know I would like to do that to my Boss!!).
Altogether a very well made film that will give you the creeps, it falls into the watch once only category.
Final Verdict 7/10
