El Cid (2020)
Failed opportunity to tell the true story of El Cid
When I heard about the series from several colleagues who worked as "extras" on the set, I thought it was a production that was going to tell the story of the Cid from a scientific historiography. However, after seeing the first season I see that it is still the same idealized image of the noble Castilian knight with high ideals. What a wasted opportunity to do a series about the real Cid.
El Cid was a warlord who took advantage of the weakness of the Hispanic Muslims to subdue them by arms and later offered them protection by suffocating them with tributes. This is how he managed to get rich and marry his daughters to the Count of Barcelona and the King of Navarre, always accompanied by a great publicity campaign by the church and the thriving nobility of the newborn kingdom of Castile.
If you are interested in the real Cid, I recommend you read "The quest of the Cid" by Ritchard Fletcher. An excellent master piece of historical research.
