Das Blut der Templer (2004)
Lovely history/fantasy/romance/action movie
I really liked this movie very much. It tells a moving story in a quite straightforward way. The viewers are immediately drawn to identify with the main character David, an orphan who gradually discovers his roots and with them a feud of several centuries' duration that he suddenly finds himself involved in.
The acting was quite good, especially the young couple (I already liked Alicja Bachleda-Curus in "Sommersturm"). And there are some very nice swordfighting scenes between the two rivalling orders.
Some characters were too transparent from the beginning (I knew the villain after five minutes) and they seem to have borrowed some traits from other movies (X-men, Indiana Jones), but hey! this is a young director. And he took on quite a big issue: some of the great relics of Christianity (the Holy Grail etc.), the Order of the Temple, ancient rivalry, two love stories....(no wonder there are a few loose ends).
All in all, it's really worth watching. I enjoyed it immensely!
Restless Spirits (1999)
Lovely film about learning to let go
I loved this film although I'm not a young girl.
I think quite a few people have difficulties in letting go.
This film tells the story of a twelve-year-old girl who learns to live with the untimely death of her pilot father through meeting two ghost pilots and helping them. On the way she also meets typical adolescent problems (conflicts with her mother and grandmother, other jealous? girls who try to sabotage her plans, a boy who might later on fall in love with her), makes mistakes and learns how to cope with them.
Just a lovely film about growing up and letting go.
King Arthur (2004)
Brilliant and highly credible new angle on the old legend
Besides being a huge fan of Mr Owen's (I adore actors who can credibly deliver a broken character) I simply loved this fresh angle on the old legend of Arthur. This film is no variation on the old 'intrigue at Camelot' theme, but a completely new approach. It is much more consistent with what (little) we know about 6th century life than the usual King Arthur films. They used to make me think of the time when the legends were written: the characters acted like 15th century courtiers (sometimes almost Macchiavellian style) and troubadours.
In this film the équipe of the Round Table are not superhuman goody-goody guys but men of flesh and blood without any fear of shedding some. And the swords really get red in the fight (i.e. the filmmakers were meticulously authentic). Even the Saxons (the enemy) are not just bloodthirsty baddies but conquerors with a different world picture from Arthur's and therefore a different standard of behaviour.
I give this film the highest rating: great cast, superb acting, simply super!!!
