Moulin Rouge! (2001)
careful or you'll miss the point
People have to be incredibly careful with this movie. If the make the mistake of taking this movie too seriously, and not accepting it as the innocent, romantic, incredibly overblown, over-exaggerated, over-everything that it is, they will be greatly disappointed. Yes it is one cliché-after another. Yes it is over-done almost to the point of distraction. But in a movie like this, the simple things really shine. And it is the simple things that people miss in a lot of large blockbusters. The chemistry between the stars for one. Sheer emotional talent. And God the singing, in any other movie the surprisingly superb vocals of Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor (who ever guessed Obi-Wan could sing??) would be buried under subplots, and subtleties, and action, and randomly interspersed cameos of huge stars, and bad acting, and everything else the movie industry throws at you to attempt to get you to sit through the movie and give them money. But in a movie like this, a movie that only has the emotion to rely on, the vocals can shine. And God did the shine. Looked at the right light, this movie is a masterpiece.
Timeline (2003)
a lot of fun when taken in perspective
I must admit, Paul Walker being listed as a lead did rather turn me off from this movie. As far as I can tell, he's almost Keanu Reeves caliber in terms of being chosen solely for looks and not for any ability whatsoever. However, my intense respect for Gerard Butler's little recognized talent, and having nothing to do, led me to renting this movie tonight. I must say, I had a good time. The plot wasn't really followed through in many points, and there were a few really glaringly off moments. But it was fun. And that's what it was meant to be, fun. So as long as you keep in mind that this movie is not up there to win any academy award's and just relax in the entertainment potential in has, you'll have a great time. However, Paul Walker is still nothing more than an attractive face.
The Good Son (1993)
Fairly good ... and then along comes the ending.
I thought this movie promised to be fairly interesting, providing that Culkin had the range for a character of this intensity. Luckily, he did. While the acting was most likely not the best I've seen, I would definitely say that it was above average. The best performance came from Culkin. While some may see his lack of emotion in the more intense sequences as bad acting, in truth it's the most intelligent and unnerving decision he (or the director) could make. I thought the subtleties they used to progress the audiences awareness of Culkin's character without fully alienating Wood was very good and kept the viewers attention, however, that did slip a little further into the movie. So, in the end, I really had only one problem with it. The ending. Not because I thought it was boring or anything, I don't think that at all. But I have a problem with inconsistency. And throughout the movie Crewson showed that she was the average mom, in other words she would do anything for her son. Even when she knows that he killed her other son, tried to kill his sister, AND tried to kill her, she never would have let go. Never. It shouldn't have been in her.
Donnie Darko (2001)
Absolutely phenomenal
Without a doubt, this is the best movie I have ever watched. From the very first second, this unique combination of a strong storyline, amazing acting, and a poignantly intellectual soundtrack, keeps your eyes glued to the screen the entire time. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers one of the most believable performances I have ever seen, with all the idiosyncrasies of a real person.
Every actor accomplishes the tricky feat of establishing solid emotion without lapsing into soap-opera-esq melodrama. The score subtly enhances every component of the film, and the Tears for Fears song "Mad World" gives me chills. Donnie Darko is a completely unique movie that touches the viewer to the core. If you have not had the opportunity to watch this epitome of brilliance, please do, and tell all of your friends to join you.
Killing Mr. Griffin (1997)
Pleasantly Surprised.
This movie really did surprise me, I expected it to be horrible. I watched it with my sister because she has a star crush on Mario Lopez and honestly expected to be bored out of my mind. Yet again, a t.v. movie managed to prove me wrong. It's not that I thought it was wonderful, it wasn't. It was predictable, stereotypical, and the writing was occasionally weak. But in general the actors managed to capture the emotional soul of the character, which in my opinion will make any movie worth watching. While it's not the best movie created by any stretch, it keeps your attention without requiring in depth thought, and if you just feel like sitting back and watching a movie for a good time, this is a good one to watch.
