Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway (2023)
Weak movie about potentially important issues
I am a big fan of Bollywood movies, but this one really isn't very good. It is rather sloppily made. All the scenes depicting Norway are inaccurate (names of airports, license plates on cars, street signs etc.) in addition to all Norwegian characters speaking a very broken and incorrect Norwegian. The movie being shot in Estonia on a low budget and with Estonian actors could explain that, but that hardly is an excuse. The translations from Norwegian to English are often wrong. When the driver in the car hit by the father shouts back, he says «Drive properly» which is translated into «Bloody foreigner»! The child welfare system is consistently referred to as «Velfred» rather than «Velferd», making the name doubly wrong - it has never been called Velferd in Norwegian and Velfred is a word that does not exist .More serious is, of course, the sloppy approach to facts. Norwegian child welfare authorities are not perfect, and do make mistakes, but would never take children away from their biological parents because of non-serious cultural differences like feeding by hand or sleeping in same bed. The movie picks up a bit towards the end, taking part in India and largely in a courtroom. It is not bad as the rest and actually has some interesting dialogue and good acting,
