Sampo (1959)
Confusing and bad!
I stumbled upon this movie thanks to Mystery Science Theater and I can safely say I could never sit through this movie without the MST3K guys riffing on it left and right. Other reviewers have mentioned the American version (what??) is worse than the Finnish-Russian version. What's the difference? It's the same movie! Even if the dubbing was bad, having better dubbing would not make the movie better. I couldn't even tell what the plot was. This movie was about as confusing as another Russian toilet creation called Jack Frost, which I also stumbled upon thanks to Mystery Science Theater. If some people call this a classic, I'd love to know what they consider a bad movie.
Resistance (2011)
Horrendous!
I'm big on war movies and I bought this cause the plot seemed appealing. I just got done watching it and it made me wish I could get my money back. This was more of a sappy love story between a woman whose husband left the village to presumably join the resistance and a German officer who stumbles upon her home cause they want to set up an outpost in the village. Considering what the title of the movie is, I expected to see action between resistance fighters and the Nazis. I saw none of that in this film. Since when is shooting a horse a normal action from a resistance fighter? This was pretty much the only action in the whole film if you don't count the random flashbacks that explain nothing. Complete waste of time.
You've Got Mail (1998)
Can watch this over and over
There are some movies that I can watch all the time and others that I like but can only watch them every so often. This movie is one of the ones I love watching all the time. I read some of the reviews from people that disliked the movie and I would like to respond to some of those comments. Yes it doesn't seem to make sense that a woman who inherited a children's bookstore from her mother would fall in love with a rich guy who seemed to take pleasure in closing down small privately owned bookstores but neither one of them took an interest in the other until after Tom Hanks's character discovers that the mystery person he had been online friends with was the woman he had developed a heated rivalry with. Until then, they were bitter enemies. However, that discovery brought out the human side of Hanks's character. He knew he couldn't tell Meg Ryan's character that he was the one she had exchanged loving e-mails with for who knows how long. Not until he could get her to like him. He was disappointed about the discovery but then realized that it was a friendship he did not and could not end so he made the best of it and tried to be the nice guy she enjoyed e-mailing. When she finally took a liking to him, it made the meeting at the end easier for her to deal with. About the only thing I did not agree with in this movie was near the end when Hanks tries to get Ryan to forgive him by calling what he did "a tiny little thing." I'm sorry but putting someone out of business is not a tiny little thing in my book. At least Hanks was kind enough to hire George from her shop. No mention of what happened to the other girl. I did not like Greg Kinnear's character though. He seemed so full of himself and acted like everything he said and wrote was worthy of a Nobel Prize.
The Christmas Box (1995)
Wonderful film.
We've made it a tradition every Christmas to sit down and watch this movie. It's a heart-warming tale that teaches us all about life, death, family, and the love that God has for all of us. The only reason I did not give this film a perfect 10 is because it could have done without the dream sequences of the angel whispering Richard's name. To me, it was a little creepy but the meaning of the dreams is revealed near the end. Wonderful casting too, especially the legendary Maureen O'Hara as the elderly home owner who has a bad attitude about the family at first but as time goes on, she begins to adore them as if they were her own family. Richard Thomas was wonderful as Richard Evans, the owner of a ski company that did not like the thought of moving in to the old lady's house at the beginning but when he learns the truth about Mary's tragic past, he puts aside his reservations about her and stays with her in the hospital in her final moments of life. If you don't mind a tear-jerking Christmas film, this is the perfect one for you.
Any Given Sunday (1999)
Not the best football film
I wanted to watch this movie because I like a lot of sports films. However, this movie really didn't have as much to do with football as it did with sex and drugs. There is a lot of swearing, which is to be expected with an Al Pacino film. A lot of the stuff in this film they could have done without like the nude scenes, especially the one in the locker room where the owner confronts the players. As far as the actual football games, they could not be more unrealistic. Seriously, a QB throwing up in the huddle numerous times? You never see that in any real game, college or pro. Also, how does a player get his eye knocked out? This movie needed to focus more on football than the ego of the QB. I question the casting too. Yes, Al Pacino makes a great football coach if you're looking for someone with low tolerance for bad plays in the game but Cameron Diaz as an owner? Bad choice. Not an ideal football film.
Drumline (2002)
Okay but not a great movie
I can stand to watch most of this movie when I feel like it but there are some things that could have been and should have been left out. I too found it rather silly that this kid got a full scholarship even though he couldn't read music. Wouldn't that have been something Dr. Lee would have asked when he recruited Devon? Afterall, it was part of the official rules to be in the band. The way Devon ignored rules, his attitude toward Lee and his drumline leader, and the fact that he caused a fight with a rival school, any other person would have been kicked off the band without given a second thought. Also, the P.A. announcer at the stadium was very annoying. Could have done without those pointless arrogant lines. Lastly, the movie ended badly. Sure, Atlanta A&T won the Classic but it ended during the celebration. They needed a better moment to end it on. Like maybe show Devon a year or 2 later leading a group of drumline hopefuls.
A Christmas Carol (1984)
The best version of A Christmas Carol
By far the best version. None of the most recent versions or the oldest versions have been able to top it. Not the Jim Carrey version. Not the Patrick Stewart version. Not even the Alistair Sim version. George C. Scott is brilliant as the cranky uncaring Ebeneezer Scrooge. The way he yelled "Mister Cratchit!" could never be imitated enough to do it justice. Frank Finlay's performance was incredible in regards to the level of passion he put into the role and overall acting ability. He embodied the true spirit of Jacob Marley. David Warner, a very underrated actor, was outstanding as Bob Cratchit. This movie also featured one of the greatest lines ever used in A Christmas Carol. A line that I don't think was used in any other versions: "So maybe next time you'll hold your tongue. For it could be that in the eyes of Heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man's child." (Ghost Of Christmas Present to Scrooge when talking about Tiny Tim)
