Marital bliss achieved through poison
31 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This very slow and tedious movie wastes the talents of its actors. The photography is well done. That's it.

The production team must have known that a story of the London glitterati fashion scene set in the 1950s needed some spice. They provided it with poison mushrooms, not once, but twice. The second time is in direct view and with the full knowledge of the victim.

All this to achieve marital bliss?

Ken Russell = classless self indulgence
19 July 2022
Was never a big Tommy fan, but at the very least Ken could have hired real singers to give the music justice. Anyway, the amount of compression used kills the dynamics, making it sound flat and dull.

That the Who were OK with this speaks of selling out, right Pete?

The movie is an assault. Period. You have been warned.

Mel Brooks' Worst Movie
30 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
1½ hours of unfunny, predictable, tedious tripe. Didn't laugh when it first came out. Didn't laugh now.

Mel can be forgiven for making a clunker. His body of work is genius. But Spaceballs is right there with the average Jerry Lewis movie.

There was more political honesty then
19 June 2022
Z is a good film. It plainly shows the brutality of a tyranny, any tyranny. We can learn much from it and how it might apply to today.

Reverse all its labels and apply it to today's Portland. Could such a movie be made now? Absolutely not. Could it be that the right-wing antibodies, portrayed as evil, may have been correct, all along?

A few things haven't changed. Reporters are still opportunistic, biased, and left wing. Tyrants are still in charge and just as corrupt. The CIA then is still the CIA now.

The character of the honest magistrate is just interested in facts, wherever they may lead. Although he's working for the right-wing government, it's honest enough that it lets him discover the truth, unlike today.

Violates the first rule of mysteries...
17 April 2022
No wonder this talk-fest flopped. The first rule of a mystery movie is to have a crime committed near the beginning. Then the audience can enjoy looking for clues to solve it.

The cast does a fine job. The sets are beautiful. But the pacing is tortoise like.

The movie is worth a watch, but only barely.

The 3 Stooges acted smarter than Smith
20 January 2022
Stewart's cornball portrayal is beyond belief. The 3 Stooges were more polished and sophisticated than simpleton Senator Smith. I'm shocked Smith is capable of breathing automatically. As the endless embarrassing hooey accumulates, the viewer casts sideward glances for a means to escape. Then, in the middle of his filibuster, Smith turns into a neo-Cicero.

However, the character is suitable to promote leftist Capra's notion that the government can fix everything if only it was honest. Unfortunately, that idea was as much hogwash in 1939 as it is today.

There is a grain of truth in the movie, the depiction that control of the media can control public opinion by omission. Media control is now nationwide and by similar acts of omission. This is the only reason I can rate this movie a 5, out of 10.

It's Indescribably Beautiful
25 December 2021
I've watched A Christmas Story at least once every year since it came out. It's as funny today as it ever was. The leg lamp has even become a Christmas icon, as have many other scenes in the movie.

Start with a great plot, interesting characters, great acting, direction and you too can have a sure fire hit.

Merry Christmas everyone.

A great production
24 June 2021
I want to thank the production company for taking me back to my childhood with this beautiful version of Pinocchio.

It was the first book my mother bought and read to me until I could read it myself. It was magical then and remains so.

Selfishness runs rampant
23 June 2021
This is a well made movie of a rotten subject, selfishness. The characters are well developed so, at the end, you realize how despicable most of them are. The father is written as an incredible loser lacking any male leadership or protective role. He's actually an emotional parasite, as are all the male roles. The women are all written as brain dead bimbos.

Meanwhile, the children suffer from the emotional neglect.

Interesting is the god-like busy body next door neighbor that sees and knows all the sins.

Still the movie tells the story well and is a very worthwhile study of the destructive power of selfishness.

Clueless
23 June 2021
There is ZERO Italian about this movie. Just your typical Hollywood unfunny sitcom of a dysfunctional family with neurotic characters. The producers chose to slander Italians with this trash, but they could have chosen any other ethnic group.

Don't waste your time.

If you want to see an actual funny movie about a dysfunctional Sicilian family, try Seduced and Abandoned.

Journey to the land of the dead
21 June 2021
A story of fatalism can still be uplifting. A father's struggle for his mute daughter to be cured is wrapped in ancient symbolism and mafia "honor".

The photography is beautiful in the ancient forests of Basilicata. The plot moves along with no dead spots. It's both human and supernatural. I don't want to give the plot away, so I'll stop here.

It's an excellent movie well worth your time. My wife and I both enjoyed it greatly.

Sergio Leone Could Have Saved This Movie
12 June 2019
Welcome to the syrupy 60s. If you're into cutesy comedy Westerns you'll love this bore. Featuring stereotypical characterizations, over extended scenes, and God-awful music, you'll be begging to be shot before they are.

Prep with lots of coffee
2 June 2019
Watched the first 3 episodes of this snooze fest. Very artsy and atmospheric but with a plot (what there is of one) that advances at a snail's pace. In general, love Italian movies. The subject matter is also of interest. Wanted to like it but this needs severe editing into a much shorter single movie.

Can I get my 3 hours back?
