I watched this movie, I read the comments and now I have a film project too. In my movie I'm going to tell the story of a "wall". I will push the button of my camera, film the wall over two hours. By this way, I am going to make my audience feel "alienated, lonely, and stagnant". I know this sounded striking. The reason why I am telling this is that people always said that this movie is really good since it gives people the perfect sense of "alienation and loneliness", and this is the main reason why "nothing" happens in this movie. If you do not get it, you are seen someone shallow and un-intellectual.
It is really getting difficult to criticize this movie, because when you do this, there is always someone attacking you and you become suddenly a "Rambo" or "Karate Kid" lover. That is unfair, because most of the people that I know who hated this film, including me, enjoy so called boring films such as "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly":) But I think no one can deny the truth that there is an excellent work in technical sense here. There is also good acting. But there is no character development in real sense, and nothing is going on. Sofia tried to put some European taste in her movie, but apparently she could not. If you really enjoy focusing on emotions, character development, European cinema is much much better in this field. The first example I can think of is "Head-on - Gegen die Wand" which is a Turkish-German movie by Faith Akin. PS: I do not understand why people mention Tarkovsky here. He is playing his game in a completely different field which he created himself-we can define it as "Dream Movie". This film is completely about real -not imaginary- world and our attitude, reactions, feelings towards it. But when you watch a Tarkovsky film, you easily imagine yourself as having a dream. Please do not compare a giant like Tarkovsky with Sofia, he deserves much more respect!
