Clickbait (2021)

A timely true crime!
25 May 2022
There are a lot of murder mystery series around but half of it, are not binge-worthy. Netflix is also notorious for producing half-baked mysteries. So why watch this? Needless to say it's a clickbait, from the title itself. LOL. It's not as good as it may seem but the provocative issue it tackles is very timely in our digital age. Clickbait and Catfishing are real crimes! Denali Brehmer of Alaska anyone? Killing her bestfriend coz of catfishing.

Anyhow, almost all the eight episodes are slow burn but it grows on you. Despite that, the structure of the transition from one character to another per episode caught my attention. That's a new way of storytelling which I love so much. Got a piece of mystery solved in each character/episode. And that lady episode is a doozy! Never one could have guessed but it's really practical.

Beats the first!
25 May 2022
This is a bit more nostalgic than the first, all the things you love about the game is here, Knuckles and Tails baby! And of course, Super$%#&@! Plus Jim is back with loads of comedy. I'd say this is better than the first, fun film!

Jim is back!
25 May 2022
Took me a while to watch this, As I've grown out of the animated 3D stuff. But hey, there's Jim playing Robotnik. And as expected, Jim Carrey carried this film into glory. Not a fan of Sonic but a big fan of Jim and his crazy antics!

Feels like SPEED BUT CRAZIER
10 May 2022
Got tired of Michael Bay and his explosions or transformers? Well, this one's for you. It has the same vibe as Bad Boys but is not as good. But it's a crazy heist story! A very enjoyable flick! Reminds me of SPEED. Just a fair warning, Bay has discovered how to use drone shots, and he exploits this so well. Get ready for a dizzy ride. LOL Lastly, Jake is fantastic as always!

She's not Anna
10 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Before Inventing Anna, there was Elizabeth Holmes, 'The next Steve Jobs'. This gal was taking billions, far from the petty change Anna was raking. But in terms of cruelty, Anna is still the con queen.

The series is not as well written as Inventing Anna but what got me hooked, is how this woman is overwhelmed by her dreams and passion. Something anyone should watch out for. Blinding her til the end. The epitome of Faking it until you make it. It's not the regular con of just getting fancy stuff like Anna. A worthy show if you want more con series.

Absolutely Kawaii!!!
7 May 2022
If you love murder mysteries, you're in for a treat! What better place to have this mystery than in Tokyo, filled with its busy streets, strict culture and ofcourse the yakuza underworld, it's refreshing to see. The character build up is smooth and the story is well written. I thought it's going to be another 'The Outsider', but I was wrong. And that last episode is a real cliffhanger! Bring on season 2!

Garbage
27 January 2022
Definitely this is the worst of 2021! Worse than the pandemic itself. LOL. Production and story is for a B movie.

Proper title is 'How to give birth during RISE OF THE MACHINES'. LOL

On another note, what's up with Chloe Moretz taking on all this lousy dystopian movies? After Kickass and Let me in, which were great, it's all been downhill from there.

Thai Twilight Zone!
27 January 2022
This show is crazy! Been looking for something that could top 'Bad Genius' but most of the Thai films/series are similar to PH cinema, full of drama, romcoms, and comedies.

Didn't expect this show to be so good! Even with some limitations with production/budget, plot holes, and a few bad acting, the story itself is enough to binge you to the end.

It's like Twilight Zone mixed up with SAW in a school setting. It's so dark! Behind Nanno's smile and devilish laughs, there's always a catch, a scheme to bring out the best or worst of you. A true journey to the human psyche, given the most uncomfortable situations. Love how her character plays out. You know how predators play with their prey before the kill. She's exactly like that and seems to enjoy every minute of the taunting.

It could have been a perfect show if some of the characters would have done the right thing. Because in reality, not all people are bleak! We don't always choose the dark decisions. LOL, It would have made the show more realistic.

The best episodes are the first and 'Hi-So', which feature the power of money and status. That ending is effed up!

Sgt. Bilko is Back!
9 January 2022
Can't pick if this show is the best comedy of 2021 or 'The White Lotus'. Such a glorious comeback from Sgt. Bilko! I love Steve Martin! It's the typical whodunit concept but as a comedy series. Its humor is not over-the-top, making it more realistic. I love how it captures the interest of everyone from being an internet sleuth listening to crime podcasts and to being a real-life detective. I for one am guilty of listening and watching crime casts. LOL. Selena Gomez seems stiff, I don't know if that's really part of her role. LOL. I'm glad there's more to this comedy trio in season 2. Does anyone know where can I get a tie-dye sweatshirt of Only Murders in the Building? 😄

Stunning like the Endgame
9 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Despite the second pandemic Christmas, it got a little bit special this year, with this last entry to Holland's Spidey Trilogy. I've never been excited like this since the Endgame. This is where the MCU Spidey and Sonyverse Spidey culminates. Though this is not original, 'Into the Spiderverse' did it first, opening storylines in the multiverse, but that was animated. That's my only complaint but the rest of the film was epic! Everyone will love it, from Toby's era to Andrew's. Might I say, Willem Dafoe is the best on-screen psychopath! His performance could be compared to Joaquin's Joker. Brilliant Actor!

The morality of science
28 December 2021
Can't wait for Nolan's 'Oppenheimer', so decided to see this docu. Quiet old but the story itself is pretty amazing. No wonder Nolan picked this story. Guess even without an advance in Germany with the allied troops, this is where the Nazis lost. Innovation is key! Glad Hitler and the Nazis didn't invest much in it. Got me curious how Nolan will use this powerful story of the Manhattan Project and Oppenheimer to his weird but entertaining storytelling.

Ocean's Eleven Wannabe

Interesting premise but it tries so hard to be so stylish a Tarantino Film or Ocean's Eleven, but ends up as a lackluster heist flick. The heist itself is not even witty. LOL.

Ellie is just irritating!
28 December 2021
Didn't know what to expect in this film. The trailer didn't give out much. But it was a splendid intro, a modern take on Alice in Wonderland so it seems. The rabbit hole this time is in the glorious 60s of London. Amazing production! After that, it gets weird and funny.

Edgar Wright doesn't seem to know which genre to tell. Is it psychological horror, is it a murder mystery, or a nostalgic tribute to the 60s? I don't know. LOL. It's a mixed bag! Hence you get mixed reactions. I for one, don't like it. Should have stick to the murder mystery and it would have been great. Lastly, the lead, 'Ellie', annoys the heck out of me. I don't know if it's her voice or her acting? Whatever it is, it's simply irritating to watch. LOL.

Don't Look Up (2021)

Satire of the year!
28 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Don't Look Up 2021 (Netflix)

Found a lot of buzz for this flick as the best comedy of the year. When I saw the trailer, it looks fun, a comedy take on a disaster film, getting away from all that drama from 'Deep Impact' and 'Armageddon'.

It's funny but it is not as funny as the hype claims it to be, the funniest movie of the year. However, I still can't get over that joke about the general charging them for something free. LOL.

What I love most about this satire is a direct punch to the Trump administration. There are many interpretations such as climate change and whatnot, but it's clear to me, Meryl Streep and Jonah Hill are the Trumps. The film also takes on the power of fake news thru social media and how the powerful and the capitalist utilizes this to their advantage. It is also a love letter on the Capitol Riots which was incited by fake news/propaganda by Trump.

Despite the ensemble cast, I like how De Caprio takes on an introvert role, not his usual pick, the aggressive protagonist . My only complaint is it's quite lengthy for a satire. The latter part of the film could have been shorter.

Don't look up is a timely film in this digital age and will be one of the best satires in my book.

A night to remember!
23 November 2021
They say wisdom comes with age. I saw this flick back in college. I had a nasty distaste for it. Thought it was boring. But month on month in movie groups, someone always had a wonderful experience with this. So decided to give it a go the second time.

And I was mind-blown with its story! Last time I saw Tom Cruise with a film with substance was 'Interview with The Vampire', while the rest are just adrenaline garbage. I admire the relationship of the cabbie with the assaasin, it's a clever plot. A better ending would also made this neo-noir more appealing.

The Mandarin's Grief
23 November 2021
It's exciting that an Asian hero is now part of the MCU. It has the right moves, that typical kung-fu fight scenes just like any Hongkong movie does. But men, that story is so lazy. So typical. It's like Marvel got so lazy they think we'll eat up anything. They should have named this 'The Mandarin's Grief'. A huge disappointment to me, contrary to popular opinions.

Haunting!!!
12 September 2021
From all the images of 9/11, I find this the most disturbing. I touches that personal choice of dying. Will I die from the fire or jump to my death. Yet there's freedom in this picture. Acceptance of inevitable death. Whatever it is to you, this is just one of the many people who jumped to their death. The documentary not only focuses on the backstory of The Falling Man but also the dwells specific to the people trapped in the upper floors of the WTC, who can't evacuate. It's a heartbreaking docu that everyone should watch.

Worst than a B movie
12 September 2021
Amazon Prime probably has the worst set of film streams out there. Synopsis of a corrupt priest having an assassin on his side is actually good but it's nowhere near to a decent B-movie. Vloggers have more budget in their videos that this. LOL.

It never fails
12 September 2021
I have a temdendous dislike for the horror genre but the Conjuring Series is an exception. Mainly because I'm a big fan of James Wan. It's a shame this third installment James Wan didn't make it. Yet it's a good watch, that void of jump scares which the franchise is known for is filled up with an excellent mystery thriller story.

Jason Statham in his finest moment
4 September 2021
Most would remember Sandler's longest yard version of this classic. But this Brit version is funny on its own way. It has some dull moments but mostly it's a fun watch. Watch how this stiff action studs Vinnie Jones and Jason Statham do stupid things out of their usual stereotype character. Statham's role, Monk, stole the show, he's just a dumb angry bloke that wants to hurt anyone. LOL.

Can't get enough of Suicide Squad?
3 September 2021
After a top-notch role in Suicide Squad, the Peacemaker is at it again. I love it when John Cena does comedy. This is 'Hangover' for couples. It's funny! But it's not a continuous supply of laughs in every scene. Still, if you wanna lay back and feel good. You'd enjoy killing time with this foursome.

Wuhan Exposed
23 August 2021
This documentary tells the untold stories in Wuhan. Its a hard to watch, seeing people who are about to die in the hospitals. It also shows the contrast between the response of China and US against the pandemic. Freedom VS political system. Sad to say both can have done better. Such an excellent film.

Sarah Paulson's worst movie
18 August 2021
If you need a scary and werid mom, Sarah Paulson is your gal. LOL Sorry, it's she has taken that role several times in AHS. Another movie that runs on a singlr twist. One you knew, it's boredom. Story is completely exagerrated. If they added a little bit of Dee Dee Blanchard's story to it, could have been more interesting.

Guy Ritchie's finest film!
13 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Next to Denzel's 'Little things', this is another contender for best film of 2021 in my list. It has that classic french noir vibe like Le Samourai and The Red Circle. Focuses on visual storytelling.

Jason Statham's character is so dark, it pulls you to that same emotional void for loss and revenge. Glad to see him make quality films again. He goes back to his roots. Doesnt speak much and does a lot of action.

Story is decent with some good twists. It's not everyday you see the boss gets his hands dirty. That really hooked me into this flick.

And the biggest surprise, it's directed by Guy Ritchie. I know what you're thinking. Yeah, it's the first film Ritchie made so dark. He specializes on action comedy, specially his signature sarcastic lines cross over on several character montages. Did the same thing here on just one or two occassion. But you'd rarely notice it if you're not a Guy Ritchie fan.

Cheers Guy, you're definitely good in making serious films. You should make more of this.

Dont let the critics fool ya
13 August 2021
Despite all the awards this film got and how the critics put this into a pedestal, sorry but I don't see what they saw in this. Yes it's a good drama about the struggle being Asian in the states. It's a good story to tell but it's typical. I'm a huge fan of Korean cinema and there's so much better than this. Almost slept halfway through the movie.
