The Photograph (2020)
Snooze fest - Seriously
I'm a guy and like all the other guys in the theater the Valentine's day trump card won out. I wanted to like this, I thought I would like it. I can do the chick flick thing with the best of them. I mean, the Notebook, are you kidding me! But this, oh this.
So slow, so predictable, and the score/soundtrack. What the literal H? I mean, slow jazz in a jazz club, sure. Slow jazz during love making scene, makes sense I guess. Slow jazz walking down the street late at night, in the backyard by the shed, walking up the sidewalk to your dad's house, looking out the window, sitting at your desk at work, hanging out in the kitchen, hanging out in the living room, hanging out with your friend, driving in your car, standing by your car, talking on the phone, at your job interview, in the late 80's, in the present - Slow jazz through out the entire film! Didn't matter if it made sense for the scene or not, slow jazz, slow jazz, slow jazz. Ahhhhhhh! I felt like I was in one of those old detective movies. You know the ones.
The story itself, as a whole, was good, but it was done poorly. Everything you think is going to happen, happens. I kept waiting for that ah ha moment when something big would happen, a twist or a kink in the plot. But nope. It went just as planned, how I thought. Boring. And the letter! You think you find out what's in the letter? Think again buster.
The best part of the whole movie was the brother or brother-in-law -Lil Rel Howery - He was funny.
Don't waste your time or money. You've been warned.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Awesome! - Don't listen to the haters.
Please, please, please don't read these negative reviews and have doubts about seeing this film. Captain MarVel was great and is one of the top Marvel movies on my list. Waaaay better than Black Panther. There's great music, 80's and 90's throwbacks, comedy, action, twists and turns, a funny cat and the story comes full circle as you find out the full history of Captain Marvel. AND, she kicks serious @ss!
People are so nitpicky, which is to say, finicky; overly critical; concerned with insignificant details. Just go see it for yourself and enjoy it for what it is. Another fun, Marvel, popcorn action flick.
I'm giving it a 10 just to balance out the ridiculous 1 star ratings.
Where the Wild Things Are (2009)
I think Saw VI would have felt more uplifting than this.
Seriously, that was one of the most bring you down, feel bad, downer movies I have ever seen. I honestly didn't get it. The wild things were mean to each other, the wild things were mean to the boy, no one was happy (especially my kids), the wild things had scowls on their faces the whole time and walked around in a kind of trance like state glaring and yelling at each other. If there was ever a hint of happiness it was quickly followed by some rude remark or mean comment to stifle the mood. I kept thinking to myself, "why did he do that" or "why did he say that", it made no sense.
The movie begins with the boy being mistreated by his sister, and then yelled at by his mom so he runs away. Then the sad feelings continue as the wild things act the same way towards each other. At one point when, Carol, goes completely bonkers and rips the arm off of his 'friend' and then tries to hit Max and then chases him through the woods, I felt like I HAD taken my kids to Saw!
If you've ever had any negative, sad, depressing or horrible experiences during your childhood/adolescence, then go see this movie, and they will all come flooding back....
Syriana (2005)
For the average movie goer - STAY AWAY!!
This movie may be enjoyable to the average Masters Degree holder of Political Science or anyone affiliated to the oil industry, but to the average movie goer looking for an enjoyable time at the Theater and a fun way to spend your hard earned $8.00 - For the love of Pete - STAY AWAY!!! I'm a big movie fan and see most movies and for the most part enjoy all genres. Action, Adventure, Drama, Kids movies, even Chick Flicks at times, and I rarely dislike films, even bad ones are usually tolerable. But I have to stand up for all the movie goers out there like myself, just looking to see a good flick, something fun with the basic feature of being understandable - This is not it! This was the first movie, ever, that I honestly would have felt good about asking for a refund. It was that bad in my mind. There were only 20 or so people in the theater and I think I counted 4 or 5 that got up and left. One guy came back in, stood in the doorway for 15 minutes and left again.
I mean this movie being compared to Traffic is ridiculous! Sure it tries to have that similar style of having many small stories with many different characters that TYPICALLY all come together in the end, but Syriana just left you hanging! I sat there waiting for something to happen but it just didn't! There was no resolve, no story, no nothing. Just a bunch of political jibber jabber that made no sense. I not only didn't understand what anyone was saying or doing throughout the entire show, but after awhile I just didn't care. I just wanted the nightmare to end so I could go home and chew on Reynolds Wrap.
If you want to see how this type of movie should be made go see Crash, 21 Grams or even Magnolia, which was fairly painful to sit through, but was far, far better than this pointless waste of money. Honestly I wouldn't even recommend this as a rental, not even a dollar rental at your local grocery store, heck if someone gave you this movie for free I would use it as a Frisbee for your dog before I would waste two hours of your life on it! Generally IMDb is a great source of reviews and I think a good way to get an idea about whether or not to see a show, I use it all the time, but Syriana receiving a 7.2 just blows my mind! It saddens me to think that most of you will believe the other 90% of comments that give this movie a high rating and will watch, but I'm sure some of you will agree with me and wish you hadn't.
Oh yea, and can someone please tell me what the crap Syriana even means!!???
The Skeleton Key (2005)
Was hoping for more - Good ending made up for it.
I saw a special screening of The Skeleton Key last week and from the trailers, I was hoping for a really good flick! I was a bit disappointed, however, in that the movie was quite slow... I really wanted more scares, ghosts, anything to make me jump, but it just wasn't there. Movies such as The Ring and The Grudge had a MUCH more scary influence on me than this movie did.
The story itself was interesting especially if you are into that kind of deep south bayou, voodoo, magic stuff.
The best part of the movie is the ending which makes up for the slowness of the film and really brings together all that had happened up to that point. Walking out of the film I felt like everything finally made sense.
I would recommend seeing this movie if nothing else looks good. Just don't expect it to be as scary as the trailers portray.
