The whole thing was played at top-pitch, without mercy; "over-the-top" pitch, actually. As with most of the 1930s "Screwball" comedies, they assumed that LOUD is funny - but it's just idiots yelling at each other.

It's also impossible laugh at anyone you'd rather strangle; the Mama is a driveling moron who spends the entire European trip in their rented house. Go outside and look around! When a Guy Kibbee character is the most intelligent in the whole film, you're in trouble.

An absolutely wretched waste of film!! Nothing ever happens. No ghosts, hardly any train, no mystery, no interest. The constant and BRUTAL attempts at comedy are painful. Everything else is pathetic. The premise is idiotic: a bunch of people stranded in the middle of no-place, because their train was held up for less than 3 minutes. What? And the railroad leaves them no place to stay, in a heavy storm? I think not. Oh, they can walk 4 miles across the dead-black fields. umm, yeah. Sure. Or, they can force themselves on the railroad's hospitality, and stay at the 'haunted' train station. A station which proved to be nothing but DEADLY BORING, utterly without ghosts, interest, or plot.

So very terribly dull that this seems impossible.

Yikes ! What a ridiculous collection of crud. Billy Rose (William Rosenberg) was just as Jewish as Fanny Brice, but this movie tried to make him into Mr.White America. Besides that (and much more important) the music is all wrong - absolutely everything is just WRONG : the arrangements, the studio recording scenes, the attitude. They have him rehearsing "It's Only A Paper Moon" in 1927, when it wasn't even WRITTEN until 1933. the whole movie is the worst example of mid-70s schlock. Haircuts are wrong, fashions are wrong, the music is wretched. It's easy enough to make a movie using real history - let's face it , most of the script was written long ago. Screwing it up without bothering to provide an interesting story is inexcusable.
