W lesie dzis nie zasnie nikt (2020)
You have already seen this a dozen times
Teens in the woods.
The nerd, the blondie, the chad, the introvert and so on...
The big ugly muscular deformed villain with a stupid backstory.
Don't do like me. Don't waste your time.
The Mist (2017)
If you loved the movie, avoid this series
This has nothing to do with neither the book or the movie. You'll get bored to death by all the useless sub-plots. There's barely some action, and a lot of family drama. The last 30 seconds are the only interesting part.
Seriously, if you liked the movie, then avoid this.
Color Out of Space (2019)
I have mixed feelings about this...
Turning H. P. Lovecraft's works into movies has almost always been a failure. This is probably the first serious attempt with a large production, but sadly it fails again.
The plot is good, the special effects are good, the characters are good. Nevertheless the director fails in proving suspence and horror. The feeble thrill is broken by a diffused underlying comedy that won't let grow any tension in you.
It's a pity, since the movie could have been a blend of both The Shining and The Thing. Sadly, the "Shining" part is ruined by a Nicolas Cage who's really far from Jack Nicholson and closer to Adam Sandler. The "Thing" part is just barely used.
I'm giving it a 6 because it's decent, but at the same time I'd give it a 4 because of the wasted chance. They were so close... :'(
Cosmic Sin (2021)
This sucks more than supermassive black hole
The only thing working in this movie are the special effects.
All the rest sucks.
Idea: less original than a zombie/vampire movie
Plot: inexistent
Character design: zero
Costume design: as if it was made by a 13yo videogame noob
Soundtrack: probably made with GarageBand.
Stay away as if this was hebola.
Open Grave (2013)
Better than the average horror/thriller
Ok, none expects this to be a masterpiece. But surely this is one of the most original attempts to present an exhaust subject such as this one (which I'm not telling you).
A bunch of people wake up in an abandoned house in the woods. None of them remembers a thing. Dead bodies are all around. With time passing, they don't know if they can trust each other. Are they victim of some experiment? Are they the cause of such evil? Or maybe are they the cure?
Unhinged (2020)
Basic, thrilling, action movie. Enjoy while eating pizza.
This is the classical adrenaline action movie, where characters run, scream and sometimes act irrationally. Don't expect any particular sociological study, any in-depth psychological analysis or else. Just watch this movie with a pizza and some beer, and without any expectations.
It's a very enjoyable movie actually, I'd rate it a 6.5.
Z for Zachariah (2015)
Simply useless. Actually not science fiction at all.
This is just "Survival Island" (2005 movie) with no sex, no eroticism and more pollution.
Seriously, if you are about to watch this because of the "sci-fi" tag, then JUST DON'T.
The film is good under a technical perspective: acting, pacing, and all the rest.
But here is the plot (no spoilers): two survivors (a man and a woman) meet, then a second good-looking man appears.
You already know where this is going. But at least you'd expect some thrill, right? Well, there is none.
El guardián invisible (2017)
Technically good, but terrible plot
The Invisible Guardian is one of those movies about a detective investigating on a serial killer. There are many of them out there. This wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for some unbearable choices such as:
1) Personal dramas and extremely short "side-stories" even if they're totally useless
2) Irrational behaviour of some characters
3) Inexplicable presence of a useless character such as the FBI instructor who provides some kind of useless motivational support
4) The serial killer is...
5) Weather-correlated situations: when bad things happen it's raining (90% of the movie), when good things happen, the sun is shining (oh come on please)
6) More things that I can't even explain in english.
So, in the end: watch it, but don't expect too much of it.
Mortal Engines (2018)
Enjoyable movie but don't expect too much from it
In the steampunk-like, post-apocalyptic future, cities move on wheels and fight each other in a war for natural resources.
The movie is not bad, but actually very simple too. Characters are obvious, the plot is linear and the whole ending is predictable, but one can enjoy it anyway. Good for a very young audience.
The Expanse (2015)
Changed my mind at the end of season 2
First of all: forget about all the people giving it more than 8 or less than 4. I wonder what they would rate masterpieces such as Blade Runner.... 27/10 maybe? Clearly this series can't stay at an extreme of the rating scale. This series just stays in the middle. It is not a masterpiece, and it is not even total crap.
Second: there's a change in the tone and rhythm of the series around the mid of season 2. In the first 1 and half season, the series has a mostly unoriginal and socio-political plot (something you've already seen in Total Recall and many other sci-fi movies). Almost no action and no thrill. Then, at the end of season 2, things start getting interesting...
Third: maybe I just got used to it, but the acting and writing seem to get better season after season. I found season 1 totally boring, populated by unlikely characters with bad acting. In season 2 not much changes, but the plot gets better. In season 3 you finally meet some real sci-fi action. In the following seasons you can finally enjoy what you probably expected.
Tenet (2020)
The perfect mix
Classy like James Bond
Hectic like Mission Impossible
Apocalyptic like Terminator
Intricate like Dark
If you loved those movies, then you'll love Tenet.
Tenet is the perfect balance of action, espionage and sci-fi, powerfully supported by a majestic soundtrack.
Ok, you might feel confused in the last part, or something might not sum up, but just remember that the "willing suspension of disbelief" is necessary for the full enjoyment of every sci-fi movie.
By now, I'd give it a 9/10. Anyway I'll watch it again to give a more sober judgement in the future.
It Comes at Night (2017)
Absolutely not original
The story is neither original nor scary. The title itself is totally uncorrelated with the plot. The story: in a post-apocalyptic scenario with scarcity of foods and a family does not know whether to trust or not some strangers.
You've already seen this hundreds of times, trust me.
Martyrs (2008)
Oh! finally something good
I've been looking for something like this for years.
An unusual pacing, a good plot twist, good actresses, a wise use of gore, a fitting ending. Think of it as a much more psychological, spiritual and refined version of Hellraiser. Ok, this is probably a stupid comparison, I know, but right now I can't remember anything else that looks like Martyrs.
Gokseong (2016)
is this even a horror movie?
You know. There is the "British humour" that makes no one laugh, and there is the Korean horror that makes no one shiver.
The movie is just a slightly macabre version of "Laurel & Hardy", where hysterical characters in a rural Korean province are victims of a demonic possession.
No scare jumps. No dark atmospheres. No spine-chilling soundtrack. No growing tension in the plot. No suspence. The only good thing is that at least it's not the usual story of a catholic exorcism (this time it's about korean shamanism).
