Lamb Chop's Play-Along (1992–1997)

Fun Variety Show
7 May 2024
I vaguely remembered loving this show as a young kid and sought out episodes on YouTube to see if they were worth adding to my kid's line-up. Surprisingly, this show holds up pretty well.

It's made up of corny kid jokes, magic trick segments, games, learning songs, dance numbers, and skits featuring the beloved puppets of Shari Lewis. The children in the show are diverse (but are mostly background actors).

Shari has unbelievable energy and clever lyrics. This is one of those shows that I would really enjoy watching along with my daughter. Not all the episodes are available on YouTube, and the available ones aren't always good quality. It's a shame they haven't kept this available through a DVD collection, especially because it has aged so well. Well worth checking out.

Sweet and Silly
9 February 2024
My 18 month old loves this show so much. She was a little put off by the actor change for Marina in Season 3-though not by the change up with Reed in Season 2, likely because he was such a minor character.

The first two seasons have weaker storylines than Season 3 and repeat a lot of silly gimmicks for kids. Marina One has a more distinguishable singing voice in the quartet than Marina Two, but Marina Two is definitely a better dancer. It would have been better in my opinion if they introduced Marina Two as her own character, like maybe Marina's cousin Martina, or something silly like that. Opportunity lost, I guess.

Shout, Twist, and Kiki all have strong performances and characters. All characters get a pretty even amount of storyline over the course of the seasons.

It's a good show to introduce kids to music and dancing with positive messages.

Nice changes within the cozy mystery formula
11 October 2023
This series follows Hallmark's cozy mystery formula, but there are some nice adjustments that make it have a little more realism:

1. Successful, glamorous woman ... but in this series, Billie Blessing's money is explained by her family owning a successful restaurant in addition to her own career (lots of work vs. Luck or just being downright unbelievably wealthy) 2. Slow-burn romance with a detective ... but Ian Jackson is an old acquaintance of Billie (her late policeman father's younger partner) 3. Involved, present maternal figure ... but instead of being overbearing, outrageous, or annoying, Aunt Cassandra is caring and funny and someone Billie can turn to for support.

I really appreciate these changes. Holly Robinson Peete brings a poise to her role that makes me think of a young Jessica Fletcher. Ian Fox does a good job of portraying an old, forbidden attraction kept in check. And Jesse Moss is always a wild card in anything he does, so it was a good choice to cast him in this because his presence added an element of suspicion for those familiar with his work.

I'd rank this above Mystery 101 and the Flower Shop and Matchmaker Mysteries, about even with the Aurora Teagarden and Crossword mysteries, but below the Chronicle mysteries.

Cute Nostalgia But Dated Content
24 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If you're looking for a children's program that focuses on personal development over romance/coupledom, you will want to skip some episodes. After a quick review, some episodes seem more like 7+ (I've discussed those below). The others are all about the ponies living a "normal" life with their friends and siblings.

One episode ("Lemonade Wars") shows Bon Bon going on a date with Ace, but he is just doing it to steal a secret recipe from her.

"Roll Around the Clock" is about Lancer and Bright Eyes liking each other but being too shy to ask the other out. Lancer's friends say "If you want something, you have to go get it!" referring to Bright Eyes, which seemed like weird wording, and she is referred to as a "sure thing," I guess because she's a nerd? Cringe. Lancer is encouraged to neg her in order to get her to go out with him, and Bright Eyes is dolled up by her friends, but ultimately they learn about just being themselves around who they like. Not a bad message, but seems too mature for really young girls and is very dated in execution.

In "Bon Bon's Diary," Teddy tries to blackmail and coerce Bon Bon into a date. She ultimately forgives him and decides to date him anyway. Ugh, no!

"Just for Kicks" is about Starlight having a crush on Ace, who is full of himself. He is a jerk to her, laughing when he covers her in mud and being really rough and dismissive with her during sports. Another pony hits him in the face with the ball after this. Ace also pouts when Starlight gets the winning point of a game, but then suddenly shows up at her job to hang out and acts sweet and admiring out of nowhere. It's kind of just a weird episode overall.

The other episodes are all pretty innocent, with nothing to scare kids and little-to-no violence.

Minnie's Bow-Toons (2011–2024)

Great for really little kids
17 July 2023
My daughter turns one in a couple weeks, and these are good sized videos for her. We have Emby and got 10 bow-toons from the Wizard of Dizz DVD (all of season 1), plus two from another Clubhouse DVD (Pop Star Minnie?). They are great to shuffle with episodes of other shows geared to young kids. My daughter basically loves songs and bright colors at this stage, and the Mickey Mouse stuff works well for her in general. It did take a couple plays for her to recognize the song and get excited, but she claps and runs over and bounces when she hears it start. I will also have her kid shows on in the background while we play so we can sing along and dance or whatever.

The episodes don't include credits when you get them from the DVDs, and I wish they would release more. I have watched the show on Disney+, too, and the experience is a little better without the credits, but they are easy enough to skip.

Edit: The 10 episodes of Season 2 can be found on the DVD release Minnie-rella.
