Jewel is back!
21 September 2021
So excited to see Jewel as a series regular again. I enjoy the synopsis of the show itself and think it had a pretty good start. It seems to have quite a bit of heart to it which I enjoy.

The main characters two step siblings that work at the firm come off as huge jerks. Hope that changes because they are so unlikable and entitled in the first episode I don't want to watch their scenes and could care less about them.

Excited this got a second season before the first aired!

Helstrom (2020)
8/10
Not exactly original but pretty enjoyable.
19 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this as it kept me interested all the way through which is rare for me. I see some people comparing it to Prodigal Son & Evil, haven't seen either so can't comment. It's apparently very loosely based on a marvel comic. Also was reading that due to covid the contracts for the show runners have been cancelled before the show hit Hulu. Really hoping this isn't the case as it certainly has style and they cast the siblings very well, especially the sister. The subject matter of ghosts, demons, possession is probably my least favorite in the horror genre but they made it work without drawing it out. I'd love to see what Helstrom season 2 looks like but even if it does get cancelled I think they managed to do something pretty cool in the first season.

God I love this show! Netflix pick this up.
30 March 2020
This is one of my all time favorites. It's so funny and well written and you really get a sense of who each character is. So bummed this got cancelled I reached out to see if they shopped it around and apparently no one wanted to pick it up. I wish Netflix or Hulu would pick up the two seasons so more people could see this. It never aired here in America which absolutely does not make sense. This is a hoot! Definitely check it out if you haven't seen it.

Really refreshing!

Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this series! I liked the story and thought the casting was pretty good as well. The story has many moving parts and didn't end up at all like I thought it would. However going into season 2 I really hope they find a more distinctive visual style to make it a hit more memorable, especially in the effects and makeup. They were not bad By any means but really could have been tied together better. My only complaint is the weird acceleration of the plot towards the end. It almost seemed certain things were just implied due to budget and happened off camera. Which could have been avoided if the writing was a little stronger at the climax. However if you're reading this you've most likely already watched it and know that doesn't matter much as the story is just getting started. I really hope they renew this as I think it's set up for a very interesting and exciting season 2!

Jett (2019)

Loved it! Please HBO or Showtime pick it up for a second season!
1 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Jett held my attention on the edge of my seat throughout the season. It's also worth mentioning it's beautifully produced and shot. The casting is on point and the writing has been pretty good. Would like to see more than one storyline in season 2. Now is there a reason Carla's shows never get a second season? Karen Sisco and Threshold both instantly come to mind. Someone please pick this up for season 2, so disappointing to hear they are no longer continuing with original series.

State of Grace (2001–2004)

A childhood favorite!
6 January 2020
I was in the demographic this was geared towards at the time, and I must say I loved it. I thought the setting, writing, characters, & music were superb. I remember something along the lines of the network changing between seasons 1 & 2 and it getting lost amongst all of that. It was a really popular show at the time so surprised it didn't last longer.

Flash forward to 2016 with the State Of Grace reunion and trying to #streamstateofgrace. I really thought after they did that panel that Hulu or someone would try and snag the rights. I get that there is so much music in this series that would have rights issues but people need to see this. The only song worth fighting to keep is the theme song, replace the rest.

Please bring this back so us fans can see it again!

Ashley Scott returns as The Huntress!
13 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Greg Berlanti you best be finding a place for her in the Arrowverse. If it wasn't for Smallville & Birds of Prey you wouldn't have the Arrowverse in the format it is today. So good to see her back in action if only for a minute! Glad you also got Dina to do a voice over as that really added to the nostalgia.

Playing House reunion!
11 December 2019
Gahhh this was great! For those of you unaware Lennon Parham who plays Kay and Jessica St Clair who guest stars as Kay's sister Stacy are friends in real life and had a great show called Playing House that ran for 3 seasons. Was hoping that she (Jessica) would make an appearance as they often collaborate. This episode like the rest of the show is great, likable characters and as always love Lake Bell.

Y'all better bless this mess with a 3rd season!
30 October 2019
So happy to see Lake Bell return to television, along with a great cast. The first season was a bit slow but by the end I really enjoyed where they were taking things. Can they get a full season order of episodes already? Jeez. There are much worse things on with far greater episode counts to beat you into submission. This is a nice break from all the crap that's on. Shoutout to all the networks that cancelled their best written shows in favor of ratings from mediocre ones. Let's hope this doesn't fall into that category!

The Rook (2019)
10/10
May the EVA's live to fight another season! Quite a long review as I really enjoyed this!
13 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
So I just finished the first season and loved it! However there are a few things to point out.

The Rook while very well written and mysterious is a very slow character driven show with patches of science fiction and action added in. The format is a mystery/spy thriller. Think Hunted with Melissa George in tone and add in that Mutant X tv show from the early 2000's for content.

I honestly think this show is very strategic in how it decides to showcase those with abilities, and the abilities are incredibly grounded from what has been showcased in this space before. Much more unusual and less gimmicky, you won't catch anyone flying around or shoot lasers out of their eyes. This however is only part of the story here, mix in politics, intelligence agencies, and human trafficking and you're getting closer to the world The Rook is trying to build for itself.

I honestly think that with how the first season ended this could grow into a strong show with the very character centric storyline of the first season out of the way. A lot was introduced in the first season, a lot was answered while still leaving enough to explore in the future. Not an easy task to do, it was nice to not get stuck with another cliffhanger abrupt ending and see the possibility of what could be explored.

I really enjoyed this series and I get to say this less and less these days, as most of the science fiction that would interest me ends up on the CW or Freeform and is garbage. It's nice to see writers who took something and made it their own (the book) put money into it, found great talent, created a coherent visual and narrative style while continuing to keep you on your toes not knowing who to trust or where to turn next.

Now the not so good things or for those of you wondering if you should watch it.

If you like things that are easy to make sense of, action packed every second, or spoon-fed to you don't bother tuning in. This will check none of those boxes for you.

In the Netflix culture in which we all live these days I feel like releasing this episodically wasn't wise. The story doesn't have enough meat at the beginning for many with short attention spans and doesn't divulge much until episode 4-5. I hope if this gets renewed that they decide to go the binge watching route.

It is based on a book, from what others have to say this shares little more than a title and characters and nothing else, tonally it is very different. I can see why people who loved the book would be against this however after enjoying this series not having read it, I'd now like to.

I say give it a watch, there is more to it than a girl who lost her memory. Joely Richardson alone especially when she uses her powers in episode 5 is reason enough to watch. Olivia Munn while kind of sidelined into her own story also kicks some ass and has some great moments as well. Each character's arc brings a different genre to the show almost.

I really hope this gets renewed as it's hard to find a show these days with strong female characters in this weird science fiction thriller genre space. May the EVA's live to fight another season!

Another Life (2019–2021)
7/10
Not original, but not bad!
25 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First of all so happy to have another space drama! I agree with the other review that wrote about a generational gap with unrealistic expectations from a pilot. After reading early reviews claiming this is a copy of arrival & sea quest among other sci-fi tropes I was expecting to be disappointed. I was not. As for the recycled plot points, that's to be expected on some level as this is a genre consisting of recurring themes found across many works. Maybe it's because I loved the 90's and all the great sci-fi it brought us. Maybe it's because I'm so sick of seeing the upfronts every year presenting another cop show or medical drama.

It's nice to see a more ambitious story even if it is similar to things we've seen before. If you ever saw Defying Gravity on ABC this is what that show should have been. However science fiction television has historically had very little budgets in television until recent years.

The pilot while not heavy on the special effects presented a two part story compellingly enough to hold my interest. It jumped around time wise a bit but the acceleration is to be expected as the focus is the alien's presence here on earth, and the journey to where the signal originates from. I appreciate that we are not getting a whole season of watered down plot points about an unknown object that slowly unravels only to have the answers and a space mission to come in later seasons except they're always cancelled. Instead we get the best of both worlds at once here.

Now for the negative. I don't really have anything terrible to say about this show. I found myself skipping a bit through the crew interactions at the beginning. I found Tyler Hoechlin's character extremely unlikable and Jessica Camacho's a bit overdone at points. Selma Blair is criminally underused. Love her and was truly hoping she would be journeying into space but alas it was not in the cards.

I would say check this out for your latest binge. It's an interesting show given to you at a pace that can hold your attention enough to care until the end. Rare in a scifi show these days. What it lacks in originality it makes up for in the pace and way the story is delivered.

Loving this show! While it stands on it's own in a number of ways, one reason I love this is that it reminds me of Off The Map. Doctors out of their element working with locals whose stories are brimming with culture and character. Really great series, very happy to hear it got renewed for a third series.

I loved this show.

Warning: Spoilers
After such a great season 3 finale you had to just go and ruin it all and make it like TWD which is completely uninteresting. Also, how is it that Rick can be on the walking dead for eight and a half seasons and Madison can't even get four full ones? You went from having a bigger overarching story to this nonsensical meandering mess that has lost some of it's most interesting characters. First three seasons are definitely worth your time, I'd skip the fourth!

Gorgeously produced series
24 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Excellent writing and production. The visual style reminds me of The Ninth Gate, especially in how the witches fly it's very reminiscent of The Girl coming down the stairs. As that is a favorite film of mine that also revolves around a book It's hard not to make a positive comparison. Really loving this series, very happy to see it was greenlit for both a second and third series.

YES SEASON 2!!! Be patient it gets better every week!
15 December 2018
Season 2 has improved vastly over season 1, which was enjoyable but a bit shallow on the character development with no real season arch. The new season is rich with character development and has a lot more plot connections throughout the season. Great guest stars and some very funny moments as well. Don't compare it to True Blood, no network (ABC,CBS,NBC, FOX) has shows with budgets on the scale of those airing on Showtime, HBO, etc with individual episodes budgeted in the million and more range. Please renew this for another season! Absolutely love it, it's also about time Arielle Kebbel had a starring tv role.
