Ma, I Love You (2023)
Gooey and eventless, not unpleasant nonetheless
While the story is full of clichés (pardon the pun), Ma, I Love You keeps you awake for most of its running time. A soap opera-like plot that's over-running, over-sentimental and where you won't be surprised by any scene that unrolls in front of your eyes as you can easily anticipate each branch of the scenario. So in the end, you have to rely on the acting from the two main actresses, Ong Ai Leng and Siow Li Xua who are really holding the movie on their shoulders with their absorbing acting (but don't count on the two French actors, Mei Ling's neighbour and the language school director, played by Gregory Henno who both cannot act for a bit! Very cringe!). The non-existent direction won't disturb you either, it's pleasant to the eye and you can check the movie out once it'll be out on Astro or Netflix, in the comfort of your home.
Ten Percent (2022)
Ten percent is no Dix pour Cent, thanks for that.
Not up to par with the French version (Dix pour Cent) but it is 100% John Morton and that's even better. Don't try to compare it with its original version, because that's not what is it, Ten Percent is a reimagined version that totally whirls into the Morton-universe (2012, W1A) : quick sharp quirky writing and nonsensical gobbledygook. Morton (brilliantly) doesn't mess with the original material coz he barely touch it, he just makes it his own.
Don't go into this series thinking it'll compare with the French version or you'll be disappointed, take is as a fresh series with a familiar background and it'll be satisfying.
A Perfect Enemy (2020)
A sur place journey
While I kept reading reviews about the expected or cliché ending, I didn't read any telling about the journey to this ending. This movie is not about where you reach but how you get there. The movie has some entrancing stories by Texel and a great atmosphere sustained till the end. So you know, the resolution, it might just be a McGuffin.
OSS 117: Alerte rouge en Afrique noire (2021)
OSS 117
With a very different tone from the two previous films, OSS 117 From Africa with Love is a much more subtle movie, with less bawdy jokes and more realistic situations but it still has its highly parodic tone. Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath tries to evolve with time but fail to do so, thankfully for the audience. Dujardin's performance is still on par. For what the series loses in lewd humour, it gains a good amount of artful comedy.
Prebet Sapu (2020)
Unexpected stops, unreachable destination
The film looks like a short feature idea which story has been expanded with cliché situations and mundane dialogues. Cinematography is nonexistent, very flat with fraught lighting (Malaysian directors often think that B&W is sufficient to make an art movie). Altogether not a bad movie with some good and compelling scenes but Mei Fen Lim's poor acting skills really keep you cringing on your seat. A good and valiant effort.
