America Under Siege (1994)
Pure, unadulterated paranoid nonsense.
Only in America is it possible to finance, produce, and market such purely unredeemable conspiracy theory nonsense...and profit from it.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Moon (2001)
A silly waste of time.
If by some chance you haven't heard of or seen this "documentary", save yourself the trouble. It is merely a bunch of information presented in a biased and misleading way with the goal of convincing people that somehow, the Apollo moon missions of the late 1960's and early 1970's were faked for some mysterious reason. The "facts" presented in the documentary are all tired old clichés that have all been debunked many years ago, there's really not much to see. Bart Sibrel has no scientific credentials whatsoever, being an ex cab driver, ex TV cameraman, and part-time minister and radio host, and not a pilot, scientist, physicist, mathematician, or any other profession that would give his theories any weight at all. The fact is, he's wrong in his ideas, comically wrong, and this documentary is just an attempt to cash in on the craze for conspiracy theories in general, the theory being that persons amenable to one theory will be likely to listen and believe another, even if it's completely unrelated. It is not a mystery that so many of the people who buy into the moon landing hoax theories are also heavily invested in conspiracy theories involving JFK, 9/11, Oklahoma City, Area 51, or a host of others. The Apollo missions stand as some of the best documented events of the 20th century, as well as the greatest scientific achievements of that century, and this tawdry attempt to diminish their importance and the bravery of the men who flew on them is embarrassing at best, and insulting in any event.
The War of the Worlds (2005)
One of the biggest disappointments ever...
I remember well waiting for this film to come out originally. All the publicity and screens on the website really made this look like a serious production. I considered the novel by Wells to be one of the great classic stories of science fiction, and was surprised that someone was willing to tackle the monumental task of creating a period/alternate history film version, a challenging undertaking to say the least. At the time, claims were being made by the director that financing of more than $40 million had been secured. Then I saw the original DVD. A half hour into it, my wife and I were looking at each other wondering if this was serious? Two hours into it we were just laughing, and I realized that instead of a real attempt to do a period film of a classic science fiction story, what we had was in the nature of a joke of some kind...but who was the joke on? Obviously $40 million was not spent on this film. It's very possible that $40 thousand was not spent on it. I can't help but wonder if either somebody ran off with a lot of investor money, or somebody just lied to drum up interest from classic science fiction fans who were willing to pony up $15 for a DVD without seeing the film first. I know if I had invested anything in this film I would be asking some questions. In short, this is a terribly executed film with laughable special effects that look like they were done by a teenager using a 1995 PowerMac. The editing is as bad as the effects, it looks like a first attempt by a dedicated high school film student, and it appears they used every second of footage shot as well, at least in the first cut. The pacing of the film is as completely off as any film I've seen, it looks like the editor got tired in the last hour of the film and just slapped it together so they could leave by five o'clock...or maybe that's when the time in the rented studio ran out. This is just bad, and not even funny bad.
Nightfall (1988)
This is a better movie than most reviews would lead you to believe...
This is one of the movies that falls into my category of "neat little movie", one of the personal favorites that I just happen to like for my own reasons. Admittedly, I often have a soft spot for films that get roundly panned by others, but have (in my opinion) redeeming values in their style, story, or strangeness. I think this movie stands on it's own as a reasonably well done film, and frankly I don't understand why people dislike like it so much. I can only figure that as a science fiction film with essentially no special effects, and no nonsense like aliens, star ships, exploding planets, etc., modern audiences just don't find it that interesting. The film is well cast with solid actors, it has some really good performances, and I'm just sorry it's disappeared into obscurity the way it has, it should have been a cult classic.
