The Fabelmans (2022)
Oh so bad
The screenplay and acting were irredeemably bad IMHO. I get that this is a true story and is apparently quite accurate to the people and events, but almost every scene was like nails on a chalkboard to me... and I'm not a hyper critical audience! The evolution of Spielberg's film making was cool, but why he wanted to make a movie wallowing in his oddball mother... and not to have it written and acted better is beyond me. Even the name of the film is awkward and actually off-putting to me. I quit on this movie about 45 minutes in... my wife thought enough of it to finish it... so, who knows, maybe you'll like it.
The Whole Nine Yards (2000)
Not a masterpiece, it I still like it
It's light, fun, fast paced, sexy, creative, and entertaining. Do Not watch this with high expectations... and you will enjoy it!
Another Life (2019)
As usual, don't listen to the haters
I pushed past all the negativity to give this a shot... and I'm glad I did. Starting episode 5 now and it's really quite good. The "mellinials in space" accusations are accurate, but that's the point. And sort of enjoyable once you lean into it. This is the young, smart, self absorbed people of today, not Star Trek academy grads, going on a mission. Good stuff and some interesting plot devices.
6 Underground (2019)
Best action movie of the year
I went in with low expectations and genuinely enjoyed it for what it was. Cudos to Netflix, Michael Bay and Ryan Reynolds for making this. It's fun and creative action and violence. Michael Bay knows what he's doing and what his audience wants. Don't listen to the haters... I'm so tired of the over the top critics posting 1 star reviews on IMDB. This movie was fun and worth watching for what it is...
Joker (2019)
Absolutely amazing
And I don't use that label lightly. I've rated a couple hundred movies on IMDB and very few have I rated this high. Maybe two? Literally my only complaint is that it didn't go on longer. I watched it with my family (18 to 52) and "more please" was the strong sentiment. Just beautifully scripted, acted, directed, and filmed. Not a single misstep as a film. Bravo! (Not a movie for kids under 14)
The Mule (2018)
Really not his best work
While not a "bad" film, I found the screenplay oddly hollow, the script seemed ad hoc, and the acting was mediocre. I think this whole project just needed more time to mature before it got green lit. It just never drew me in with enough substance or character to get me emotionally involved with the characters. Eastwood's character seems without focus or motivation and therefore not really that compelling. It may be time for Clint to pass the baton.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
Outstanding western campfire stories
Absolutely terrific film. It covers so much territory and such wildly different styles and characters. Each is a mini masterpiece on its own... the writing, acting, vusuals and narrative construction are all genius. They connect then perfectly through a shared theme of hardship and death in the old west. Picture an oral history of western experiences, shared, told and retold around many a campfire. Each has been colored and shaped through the retelling and the story teller with some becoming more fanciful over time and others becoming almost like ghost stories. Ignore the reviews that label this a dark comedy... it's not. It's life in the old west as told to a willing audience around a camp fire...but brought to life by the Cohen bros.
Standup and Away! with Brian Regan (2018)
Solid, sometimes even brilliant
I don't understand and the negative reviews here. I've liked Brian for a while. I have most of his CDs and have seen him live twice. I was prepared for disappointment with the show based on the IMDB reviews and instead found myself laughing out loud.
I give this a sold rating and recommend it!
Tin Cup (1996)
Yes, 10 stars, get over it
I've probable only given 10 out of 10 to two other movies at most. I'm not an easy sell or a forgiving movie fan. But, I love this movie. I just watched it again for maybe the 6th time and I still found myself laughing and crying at the same time, (out loud, on an airplane) during the climatic scene. I think this movie gets my vote for best sports movie of all time. Yah, I said it. Get over it.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Don't Believe the Haters
I cannot for the life of me figure out the negativism in so many reviews out there. I'm a 40 year SW fan and know the good movies from the bad. I swear there must be a Russia-backed fake social-media campaign going on here. If critic and rotten tomatoes scores are high... it can't be a one star movie. If you have criticisms, that's fine, please register a rational 3 or 5 (out of 10), not a childish 1-star. IMHO, This is a good SW movie. Extremely good in fact. That doesn't mean it's without flaws, and I'm sorry if you felt it violated esoteric elements of Star Wars cannon, but get over it. Compared to the Force Awakens, this was absolutely fantastic, especially in that it did new things vs. making a hash out of old themes. Things moved forward. Characters were developed, new locations were seen, old characters gave strong performances (Mark Hamill has learned to act!). Weak or has-been characters were removed. (yes sorry at some point everyone in the original trilogy has to die!) Sorry. Don't be a baby about it. The script is well thought out. The dialog flows and is witty. We learn new things and they improve some old things. Yes there are a few cheap plot devices but please realize they existed in the old movies as well. I and my whole family (age range from 17 to 51) enjoyed it immensely so, don't believe the haters.
Children of Men (2006)
Over rated and ham handed
It's not a "bad" movie, it's just not actually a good movie. Script, directing, acting, production design, all are just sort of lacking. It bugs me that many seem to think the movie is either original or meaningful. My guess is that many of the very positive reviews come from people who sort of politically align with the movie's negativity about the future, and thus aren't reviewing the movie as much as the Vision And supposed message. More specifically... The antagonists don't have a real face or story. Our heroes keep running from things, but it's all kind of silly. There are about ten sensible ways out for them but they keep running away from silly seeming over the top mobs of hooligans, or police.
