A great bit of psychology
4 January 2006
Whole heartedly recommended. The plot is a little lame, with several holes big enough to drive a bulldozer through. However, aside from the ending, which is completely inexplicable, the Franhenheimer and Ziek do manage to actually use the plot gaps to provide twists. Saying that, several of these twists were so obvious that a little more imagination would have been nice, but there were enough surprises to keep you interested and on your the edge of your seat. It is quite a psychological movie and needs to be concentrated on to keep track of the plot.

In terms of acting, de Niro, Reno and McElhone are very good (Jean Reno in particular, but since I rate him highly, I may be biased). Sean Bean and Jonathan Pryce are a bit weak, but just about acceptable.

Too dreadful for words

Warning: Spoilers
Not a boring story, but one that becomes more and more incredulous as the lame plot goes on. I am sorry, but a child of 5 could have written a better plot line. My main gripe - and here is the spoiler - is the aliens. OK, "War of the Worlds" the aliens get wiped out by viruses, but here they insist on invading a planet which is 70% water, and they get burnt by... you guessed it... water. A race with this little IQ probably would not have created fire, let alone interstellar travel. I mean, Christ, one good storm will have them wiped out. Probably the worst film Mel G has ever appeared in. I can only assume he was using to bankroll that other film of his (which I have not seen).

Summary - if you like lame plots, little action, no suspense and films that can't decide what genre they should be in, this is for you. Otherwise miss it.

Movie for insomniacs
10 February 2005
After reading reviews from various sources, this sounded like my sort of movie, so I went ahead and actually bought it on DVD. So what do I think? Well, compared with the other members of the pantheon of American comedy classics, this barely struggles to get off its knees.

Previously I have fallen asleep part way through, but I just put htis down to tiredness. So I went to bed early, got a good 10 hours sleep, put it on at 10:00 am, and found myself dropping off by 11:00. That's it for me. I have heard others compare this tho the RHPS. Don't believe it. This is without doubt the worst movie I have ever seen. I did not give it a 1 because at least the 80's costumes were worth a titter for the first 2 minutes. After that, forget it.

This film has no redeeming features. Worth watching if you can't get to sleep, but otherwise give it a miss.

70's Britcom at its best (or worst)
4 February 2005
Depending on whether you like 70's britcom, you will either love this or hate it. For me it epitomizes a simpler era - one where sexist humor was acceptable and not everything had to be so PC. The thing it is most like is a series from the same era - the name escapes me but it had a black and white couple living next to each other with the men making snide racist comments across the garden fence, but respecting each other underneath, while the wives sat in the kitchen bitching about men over a cup of tea.

Frankie Howerd is, well, Frankie Howerd. He brings the audience right into the film acting as both lead actor and narrator. It is full of his classic one line wit which has never been emulated by anyone (some may say this is good thing, but not me; Nay, Nay and thrice Nay!). The sets were clearly done on a budget, and if you like whiz-bang special effects then forget it. This was clearly a Frankie Production.

So (in the words of jib-jab) if you are a left wing weenie, forget this film, but if you are a stupid dumb ass (like me), take a look.

Another Adam Sandler movie
28 January 2005
This is another typical Adam Sandler movie. You either love them or hate them.

Like all other films by him, it would be brilliant if it wasn't so clearly moralistic. In this case, it is a simple good vs. evil film, but with the twist that the devil is a good guy - or at least a not so bad guy. The ideas in the film (as with most of his others) are pretty original, and (aside from the moralistic bits) pretty funny. But as usual, it is a little too overloaded with honey to be rated as a truly funny film.

I don't think it is quite as good as "Happy Gilmore", but I might be biased because I both hate gold and love hockey. If you like Adam Sandler, you will like this film, if you don't, you won't. If you have no idea who Adam Sandler is, take a look at this and then you will know whether you ever want to see another of his movies again.

A true taste of the '70s
14 January 2005
Tommy is one of those films I can watch again and again. I guess I first saw it when I was about 15, and what made most immediate impact was the music. Strident and tightly coupled to the plot. The Who are brilliant, and Elton John as the Pinball Wizard is just mind blowing (if slightly camp).

I have since watched it countless times and it wasn't til I watched it in, how shall I put this, an illegal state of mind, that I actually realised how well the film hangs together and it's real meaning. Up until then I mainly watched it for the music, but after that it became a whole different ballgame, and I watched it to extract more of what Ken Russell was really trying to get at.

Anyone younger than about 30 probably will not understand this film at all, but if you are of the right generation, see it a couple of times because you may not get the meaning the first viewing.

Several memorable performances - Elton John as the Pinball Wizard, Keith Moon as Uncle Ernie, Ann Margaret as Tommy's mother and - of course - Ollie Reed who has never done a bad film.

One of the better comic migrations
10 January 2005
This is one of the better comic migrations. Funny, fast paced, and straightforward. Hell, even the obligatory romance is funny. Much better than Spiderman if you just want light entertainment. Somewhat let down by costumes, CGI and make-up (sorry, but two corks painted red are not very convincing stumps, and could have done with more women in leather and jack-boots). One to get out rental before committing to purchase. As alternatives, look at Punisher and The Mummy - both are better and I think have more long-lasting appeal. Only one line really sticks in my brain "... I am a pretty poor shot, but this gun fire REALLY big bullets".

An thoroughly enjoyable romp
10 January 2005
First let me say that generally I do not find Simon Pegg funny generally. I tend to rate most of his comic characters only slightly above "Mr. Bean". But, having said that, this film is a very refreshing comedy-horror flick. It is like an updated Hammer House of Horror (though with fewer heaving breasts). There are a whole bunch of little visual jokes that really make this film, as well as the character interaction.

I would recommend this film to everyone over about 15. Yes there is quite a bit of comic violence, but what you just have to have it in this sort of flick. It was not a film that made me laugh out loud very often, but it definitely kept me entertained. I am just glad they did not remake it in the US (yet) with a baseball bat substituted for the cricket bat - although either would be equally effective!

The Punisher (2004)
Not too shabby
16 October 2004
All credit to Stan Lee, this film is pretty good for a shoot-em-up. Light on plot, heavy on action, with the inevitable bit of romance and tragedy thrown in, it reminds me a little of Terminator-2.

Some gratuitous bits - the shape of the fire at the end, the Russian, oh and the start was just too weak to be realistic. But once the action starts, the film gets into it's stride. John Travolta played his usual psycho role well, Thomas Jane was mostly believable.

For a comic translation, for me it is better than Spiderman, but not as good as the first Batman. Overall, an OK film to get out on DVD once in a while.

Brilliant
13 October 2004
I have watched this film countless times and it is always funny, entertaining and visually appealing. It combines a great story (actually about 8 stories), lush cinematography (a personal must have), and superb dialog. When I first saw it, I thought it was a good rip-off of pulp fiction (a common theme on the message boards), but later you come to realize that this simply is not the case. IMO, it is much more like "The Usual Suspects", another great film.

The visual appeal puts it in my top three list for this (along with The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and Das Boot).

There is no weak character - everyone is perfect and fits into place and has their own role in the whole story. But my personal favorite is Rory Breaker. He manages menacing and humorous at the same time in perfect combination.

Favorite lines (from Rory Breaker) "If you hold back anything, I'll kill ya. If you bend the truth or I think your bending the truth, I'll kill ya. If you forget anything I'll kill ya. In fact, you're gonna have to work very hard to stay alive, Nick. Now do you understand everything I've said? Because if you don't, I'll kill ya."
