Conan the Barbarian (1982)
31 years later, it's still entertaining
I saw Conan for the first time a few days ago. Lately I've been in the mood for 80s and 90s action flicks.
Conan is one of those films that are so bad, their amazing. The acting is mostly terrible. Schwartzenneger barely speaks, probably because he was cast more for his physique than his acting skills. However being a barbarian, his Austrian accent is a plus to the character.
Many scenes seem patched together in a rough way, as though the director wasn't sure how to transition.
The sets are actually quite impressive as are the special effects (for 1982), and story is compelling enough to keep you interested despite action sequences that could have been much better.
Overall, it's entertaining and memorable, despite and perhaps even because of it's flaws.
An additional bonus is James Earl Jones giving a fantastic performance.
Elysium (2013)
Hollywood self-righteousness in an entertaining package
The films action sequences are exciting, albeit not anything we haven't seen before. The cinematography is fantastic and gives a very "2001 a space Odyssey" meets "Mad Max" feel. The protagonists name is even Max...
Now comes the annoying, hypocritical Hollywood part. The film very blatantly is attempting to critique American immigration policy, in itself not a terrible thing to do, but when Hollywood tries to "teach", they usually do a terrible job of it, because... Well a lot of people there happen to be part of that 1% of the super wealthy who live in gated mansions and have Latino gardners.
Oh, AND, and this one was a HUGE blunder - Matt Damon, a white male, is cast to play basically the only white guy on Earth who also is the one to save all of Earth's miserable, mostly latino population. White savior complex annyone?? They couldn't find 1 Latino or Black actor who could lead this film?! This casting choice took any credibility the film could have had and threw it out the window.
Echo in the Canyon (2018)
The music and artists of the period make this worth watching
Let's just put it bluntly - Jakob Dylan has the interviewing chops of a dead mouse. I enjoy his music and the Wallflowers, but he is honestly the worst interviewer I have ever seen. The only time I recall him smiling was when David Crosby mentioned his father, the only time his father was mentioned. Grunting in response to Rock legends reminiscing about days past? Seriously? And it doesn't happen just once...
The covers are ok at best, but usually monotonous and boring.
If you are a huge fan of the Mama's and the Papa's and the Byrds, you will be willing to sit through this, if not, don't bother.
God's Not Dead (2014)
Review from a christian
The only good thing in this film was zero sex, violence and drugs.
The script is awful, most of the acting is awful, although it's probably more the director/cinematographer at fault than the actors themselves.
A better, and more factually accurate way to convince yourself/your youth group that God isn't dead is to watch the plethora of debates between intelligent christians and atheists on youtube.
Enola Holmes (2020)
Very nice film
I watched it with my wife and older kids. Not "headbanging feminist" as some have claimed.
Very well produced and acted.
There is violence that was more brutal that I was expecting, so be prepared for that. Zero nudity/sex and no foul language I can remember. Because of the violence, I would recommend not allowing younger children to watch.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
It's a good movie. Period
It's funny. It's sad. It's predictable. It's surprising. It makes fun of Eurovision. It's beautiful. It has Rachel McAdams, who just makes every film she is in at least 10x better.
It is a good, entertaining movie.
Robin Hood (2018)
A heaping pile of sh#t
This egregiously ahistorical, politically correct disaster is an afront to human intelligence and the legend of Robin Hood.
The ONLY scene of any worth is the reimagining of 11th century combat towards the beginning. That was kind of cool.
The attempted critique of Western imperialism, xenophobia and capitalism is just embarrassing.
The script is awful. The acting if awful. The characters are awful. The movie is awful.
Downsizing (2017)
Too preachy
Basically an attempt to "holly-splain" global warming, downsizing is a very thinly veiled metaphore for lowering our carbon footprint. Not necessarily a bad thing, but one thing Hollywood is bad at is educating the public.
The Knight Before Christmas (2019)
Awful
Netflix and Christmas just don't seem to go together, and this is one of the worst films Netflix has made in a series of very bad Christmas films. Don't waste your time.
