If you are like me, then the chances of seeing Top gun in Theaters wasn't just possible. Nevertheless i can proudly say, i was able to watch the sequel to the classic and am i glad they made it so memorable
Top Gun Maverick: Pete Mitchell returns as a Aviator he has been tasked with a rather impossible mission and train elite graduates across the country to successfully execute it.
With legacy and Tom Cruise as the criterion, the movie already had a huge cult following irrespective of how it turns out. Managing and exceeding expectations was already a huge ask. But this movie does it better, it exceeds the expectations by a huge margin and brings out many surprises along the way. Tom Cruise is a Legend, i think he can do no wrong, may it be the stunts, his involvement in the characters, charisma, whatever you give him he aces it and the director realized this factor and used it to the movies' advantage. Everything in the movie is centered around Maverick and its surely a one-man show coupled with few brilliant performances for other actors who merely seemed like support characters. Maverick steals the show and carries the movie throughout no flaws what-so-ever.
The premise is rather simple and easy to understand and if you've seen Top Gun recently (just before the movie like me) you will follow the love letters to the older version and relish it. An enemy base which needs to be destroyed because of the illegal activities involving nuclear reactors and if left alone might pose serious threat to global arena. Sounds more like a Mission Impossible montage, but since its a movie about flights, the trick is to get down via a narrow entry point, destroy target, exit with huge incline and survive to make it home. Maverick was called in to train the best of the best because why not? He is the Maverick. Strapped for time, and a impending doom, Maverick does what he does best. Showboating his skills and inspiring the fleet of aviators.
The premise and story until then is more than sufficient to hit a home run, however the director had few moments, like training Goose's son, reconnecting with his first love, the move on from Goose's death, the bond of Ice-Maverick. All of these made such beautiful connections that you would want to see how it all turns out. This was a very difficult ordeal as it is and with so many backstories, the director gave a very clear and proper screen time to justify their involvement in the movie, truly inspirational directorial brilliance.
Other thing you will relish in this movie are the flight scenes. It is obvious that there will be many; but in every scene you feel that the maneuvers, dog fights are actually happening. It was shot so well and not just the actors did a great job, but the special effects coordinator deserves a huge round of applauds as well. There were scenes when the plane banks right you lean and when the pilots feel the jet flush you will feel your breath stops for a moment before gasping for air. It was a real treat to eyes and a very convincing play by the director that makes you believe you are travelling along with the actors, a very very difficult feat to achieve, very well done
Was tom cruise love interest needed? Meh.. nope Do you root for others apart from Tom Cruise, not really.. but is that a bad thing, definitely not.
Top Gun achieved Top Honors at all levels.
