Forty-Seven Days with Jesus (2024)
This is a long way from "The Chosen"...
I really wanted to like this film. I'm a HUGE fan of "The Chosen" and have enjoyed recent "Christian-themed" movies like "Jesus Revolution", "The Shift and "His Only Son". I also like Yoshi Barrigas, who played the disciple Phillip for 2 seasons of "The Chosen". Alas, I wish he'd just stayed with "The Chosen". The plot of this film was more formulaic than even the corniest Hallmark Christmas movies, the dialog was wooden, and I'm sorry, but the musical numbers were really insufferable (and I love and have seen the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" more times than I can count). Barrigas did the best he could with a fairly annoying character, but yikes. It's been a long time since I have been THIS disappointed in a film.
All of Us Strangers (2023)
Prepare to be Haunted
I can't recall the last time I saw a film that moved me so deeply. I sobbed uncontrollably through much of it, even when seeing it the second time around. Of course, I'm gay, I'm single, I grew up without a dad and lost my mom to cancer when I was 16, and could totally relate to Adam's grief and feelings of loneliness, so the plot hit me on many levels. But the film is absolutely beautiful, the acting is perfection and Andrew Scott's ability to display the emotions of a lost 12 year old boy in the scenes with his parents was especially effective - and heartbreaking. I can't get the film or the end sequence featuring Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "The Power of Love" out of my head. All I want to do is talk to people about all the feelings I had about the movie! Don't miss it!
