The Walking Dead: Dead City (2023)
Lazy writing!
OK, so it's a year or 2 later, and everybody's moved from Georgia
to the Hudson river area of NY state.
Why?
And how'd they get there?
Many connecting threads totally missing here, perhaps to be accounted for by a couple lines of dialogue in a later show, or just abandoned entirely.
This show is now almost entirely dependent on the strength of the actors and character identity to carry it.
The writers have run out, and are running on fumes.
We get yet another evil super-villain (the Croat), and an endless sequence of dastardly groups repeating a now dreary, and no longer fresh, pattern.
FX and visuals in general are very good though, and the acting, as always, is excellent.
Maggie and Negan are interesting characters with unique moral questions, and that is what is carrying the show at this time.
The fresh ideas seem to have run out though.
The Door (2013)
Well done and genuinely creepy
This film chills with ideas and suggestions more than with visuals and gore or straight action.
The director, IMO, does a great job with a modest budget and pulls out a bag full of skillful director's tricks (lighting, camera angles, shadows, color variations, etc) to achieve his ends. When there is an effect, it happens in shadowy spots of the screen image, reinforcing a spooky ambiance in the film.
One of the best low-budget/minimal-FX films I've seen in years.
It worked for me.
My hat is off to the director/writers and actors for a job well done.
