Carnival Row: Carnival Row (2023)
WHAAT!
Season 2 episode 10 and this is the finale? Sorry but this does not measure up to any of the previous episodes. Plot holes...Philo was hung but he survived. How, if I may ask? Or perhaps I missed something.
Another thing that bugged me...the sudden shift from war in episode 9 to apparent peace in episode 10. While I'm sure it took some time the viewer has no idea how long it took or what really happened to the New Dawn movement.
I enjoyed the series very much but some viewers may be put off by the number of important characters in the show. You really have to watch it closely or you're bound to miss a crucial segment.
Season 2, I felt like it was cut short. Perhaps there should have been a few more episodes to allow for a smoother transition to a peace-loving community/society.
Patriot (2015)
Quirkiest Show Ever But Well Worth watching!
I would have given PATRIOT 10 stars but I just couldn't do it. All of the actors did a great job with their characters. The camera action was spot on and the scenery is perfect. The dialogue is often funny and just as often serious and dramatic.
Quirky (odd), right off the bat in episode one a character is shoved into the street and hit by a van. Seems like all the men at Macmillan have to piss at the same time-8 guys all lined up doing their thing. In one episode the guys are openly comparing their penis sizes, all of them are overly small (I wonder how that was done).
But a few things really bugged me. It's hard to believe that none of the reviews mention the fact that in several episodes when characters were speaking French there were no English subtitles. But in some episodes subtitles were always used. I can't believe that was done on purpose?
One more pet peeve of mine, I don't like unanswered questions. 1) How did John survive a 40 foot jump to the sidewalk and more importantly why did he do it? 2) How did John know he only grazed the accordion kid when he could barely see anything in front of him? 3) Why did the group pool their mony to "buy" the accordion kid and just let him wonder off after they secured his release? If I had shelled out serious money I would want to make sure the kid was taken care of by someone who really cared.
But overall PATRIOT is a kick-ass great show, something you rarely see on television. I wish more show were this substantive, where all the characters were so fleshed out and the action flowed well.
But I do wonder who was questioning John's father throughout the show? It did help to keep the facts straight so it worked well. Take the time to watch all 14 episodes, it's worth your time.
If I Stay (2014)
VERY TOUCHING
IF I STAY is a very touching movie. My heart was "in my throat" three times at least but I won't go into detail. Watch it and you'll get it.
Overall, I think the actors did a great job. The girl who played Mia was exceptional. I was surprised to see a few of the actors had minimal roles, like her grandmother. That sort of confused me; I expected her to be sitting next to Mia comforting her and talking to her while she lay in the hospital bed fighting for her life.
One minor detractor, since Mia is out of body and spiritual I was wondering why others moved out of her way while she was running through the hospital but I let that go, the film was that good.
I enjoyed the music esp. The cello. You seldom hear classical played in most flicks. That was a plus. If you are looking for a good heartfelt film, IF I STAY is right up your alley!
The Consultant (2023)
Not a comedy!
I watched all 8 episodes only because I needed to know the outcome. Comedy, no way. There wasn't one moment of comedy. Really, the show was over the top and not in a good way. First episode, first scene...a young kid shoots and kills the boss of the game tech company. A few minutes later we see the boss engaging in a sex act with the Consultant. The show went downhill from there.
How in the world is this show rated a 7+ out of 10. Did these people actually watch the show or were they paid to rate it anything above a 5? I only gave the show 2 stars because I actually enjoyed the last episode.
If you have 4+ hours to kill knock yourself out. But you could also spend 4 hours watching 2 top rated movies instead.
When We First Met (2018)
If You Love Time Travel, You'll LOve This Movie!
I am very impressed with this Netflix film. It has everything I enjoy in a movie. I can't get enough of time travel either in print or in film. Adam Sandler has directed some great stuff. I enjoy light hearted feel-good comedy. I watched this in 1 setting, no breaks, and I seldom do that. The acting is spot on, nothing seems forced or contrived. The guys get their girls and all's well that ends well. It's a lot of fun. Sit back and enjoy it. I did.
The Protector (2018)
BETTER THAN SOME BUT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER
This is the first Turkish series I have ever seen. While I enjoyed the scenery, it was sort of ruined because the show is riddled with plot holes. One would think that by the last episode, a director with a good eye for detail would have tried to fill in the blanks. There were so many plot holes they stuck out like sore thumbs. For example, in the last episode how did Layla's body get from the car to the hidden room. For that matter I never saw anyone carry her body from the office building to the car? Perhaps I missed it but I think not.
On a positive note, there was just enough action to keep me watching. I did watch the full 10 episodes in 2 days. But honestly I knew who the Immortal was after the first 2 episodes. It was quite obvious, no mystery there. Aside from the plot holes and any other flaws, I will watch the second season.
Texas Heart (2016)
A heartwarming Feel_good Flic!
It's tough to believe a movie this good only has 8 reviews. What's even harder to believe is why someone would only rank this film a 3 out of 10 claiming it is a big waste of time. I don't even think he bothered to watch it. Why would someone only write a 1 line review. That is not a fair review by any means.
This dramatic and often comedic movie portrays a little slice of Texas, it's people and it's hospitality. Juniper rubs off on one man in a very good way when he takes the time to open his eyes and look around, seeing a small town full of wonder people for the first time. The acting was, in my opinion, top-notch. The movie was engaging, funny and real. Spend a little time and watch Texas Heart; you'll be glad you did and then you'll tell your friends about it as well.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)
ANOTHER GREAT KING ARTHUR STORY, IT'S RIVETING
I love King Arthur movies but this one is by far the top of the heap. The action was nonstop, riveting and bone-jarring. I rarely watch movies without a break but I watched this one in one sitting. Some of the scenes were dark but I am sure that was intentional. If I could give this flic 11 stars I certainly would. If you're looking for something above the ordinary, this is the ticket.
Pearl in Paradise (2018)
A Load of Fun with 1 Small Problem
I enjoyed the movie and the exotic scenery but one thing bugs me and here it is. This might be a plothole unless I am mistaken.
When did Alex contact Colin concerning his trip to Fiji? He sees a note from Alex in his room. How does he know about her? It is obvious they never met and when she bumps into him at the airport she does not recognize him even though she now has a copy of his book with her.
The Letter Writer (2011)
Did you like Pay it Forward? If so, you'll love this movie.
If you don't watch another movie anytime soon, I encourage you to watch this film. This movie could melt a stone. You cannot watch this and not take anything useful away with you. It will touch your heart.
All the actors in this movie did a superb job. If you liked Pay it Forward, you'll love this movie. We all need something like this now and then. Watch it today. You'll be glad you did.
The young girl, Maggie, did a wonderful job. The power of her emotions is staggering.
Sam, aka Bernie Diamond, was simply amazing. We are blessed that he lived long enough to complete the film. He passed away shortly after its completion at the age of 89.
The older folks from the nursing home were heartwarming, to say the least. Again, please take some time and watch this film.
