Mother! (2017)
Two movies in one
Why I titled my summary of this movie as two movies in one? Well, you do have two different perspectives of this future classics.
The best thing for you to do is to watch this movie without background knowledge, and then you will have to put on "Thoughts calculator" and think this movie thru watching it. I do appreciate that you know nothing when you watched trailer, or look at the synopsis.
The movie start confusing, and for the most part of the overtire you are confused as a spectator, and then you think is this a comedy, a horror, what is this? And I never see a movie that use that confusion as a narrative to pin down you on your seat wondering "What in hell is going on?". That is probably the most perfect and original way to keep your attention. - First movie -
But then, on the edge of saying "This is bad" you hit your self in the head with your palm, yelling "I am stupid!" and start to put all this little parts and begin to understand. Then you are watching a different movie.
Spoiler
When you realize that overture is a book of Genesis, when you understand that first visitors is exiled from the Garden of Eden, and then Cain and Abel, and Sodom and Gomorrah, and the great rain and awaking of the monotheist religion, and that he is a idea/god and she is a life/holly spirit and that house is Earth and their child has been given to the people and they killed child and then eat him, you will adore that palm in your head. - Second movie -
The movie in artist look, has provocative visualization, which give you a constant feeling of discomfort and it is putting you on the edge. You are following the emotional discomfort of Jennifer Lawrence, and she is brilliant to say at least, and that makes you to like her, to hate her, to - don't know what i think of her - at the moments. That constant feeling of discomfort is what may pull you away from this movie, but if you get used of it, or just try to ignore it, which is hard, you may enjoy in surreal visualization which is brutal on most occasions.
For the end of this review, I give this movie 8 of 10, because it is a brilliant and a future classic piece of cinema art, but it does have a several problems in narrative, and the main problem is confusion, which I personally adore and think that this is a probably most original narrative in past decades, but in cinema retrospective it is just confusing. The second problem is that this movie to be fully understand require mythological knowledge, and non-stop attention, which is a problem for some, especially younger public, or non Christian public, and that is a problem. The whole idea of cinema is to be universal and to show and be maid for everyone, but everyone can not enjoy this movie to the full, and some will see this movie as what they see, a story of two people in the house, or something like that.
The Bad Batch (2016)
What happen when you abandoned art, just to be cool?
The true answer to that question can be summaries in a several sequel, or you can just try to watch this "movie".
When this movie came out, I truly recognize a great new sci-fi franchise, something like Orwell's "1984" theme, my concerns that VICE product this movie was left somewhere in my back head. I was so excited about this movie. We didn't have a proper, the world is desert, movie for some time, I mean if you don't count Mad Max: Furry road from 2016.
But, this is true, when ever you left your concerns somewhere in the back of the head, they often cam and bite you on your ass.
Expectation - HIGH Realistic - Fu.... VICE
Idea was there, idea was abandoned, they thought that is enough just to be cool. To be honest, the whole vibe is kinda weird, and it is not repulsive, it is interesting. But that is that. Characters are non existed, the story is non existed. I expected to be some how documentary narration, but it isn't. It is just bunch of long sequel scenes without any dialogue, and with youth alternative music, to say like that. In other words, the are just trying to be cool, to have that street modern "we are fu..ed and free vibe".
The whole concept of movie preparation remanded me on Gaspar Noe 2015 movie "Love", which is just little more artsy porn, when he say "The script was on two pages", and that say a lot about movie. The same is here.
Ana Lily Amirpour, didn't provide us anything with this move, she just make a very bad narration in that huge wish to be good. When this things happen, and when fun of work is changed with "This will be the best thing ever", often things go south, like here, deep south.
Moana (2016)
Great potential, but....
If you like Disney, I mean Disney classics, this is not one of that. The idea is to go to the roots, whit a lot of music, lot of songs, singing etc. Well that some time do a magic, but some time it doesn't.
The story had a great potential, really great. Interesting mythology, adapted to a story. Something like "Song of the sea", not Celt mythology off course, but interesting. So much potential to build characters, to give a depth to whole story, to create cinema animated magic- but we get a stupid chicken, princess and a good narcissus magic guy.
The whole story didn't catch that serious note, nothing was considered serious, the approach to the legend was, let do a lot of singing and wacky jobs and that is it.
I won't say that is unwatchable, but you loose some interest after 15 minutes watching it. The main reason for that is that you can not find a respectable note, and off course, singing. SO MUCH SINGING...
When I say singing, I mean unnecessary songs. They are rely not needed. If you take a songs, the whole movie would last around 30 minutes.
But the biggest sin is that this story had a such potential. It is a rely, rely god story. It has everything, a drama, end of the world, demons, heroes, the whole Maori mythology, a fight between good and evil, a message, everything. But some jerk decided to take all that without a hitch of seriousness, and denied us a great Disney movie. The only surprise is that at the end Moana didn't kiss with a Maui.
With all that in my mind, the move deserved a 5 out of 10. It has his moments of entertainment, and it has his moments of fun and laugh, it is a good movie for children aged 3 to 9, and that is it. Songs are simple, but not catchy, I watch a movie half a hour ago, and I'am trying to remember a melody of one of the song- I can't.
To say at the end, if you have a kids age 3 to 9 it would be a great for them, and they will forget it soon.
Song of the Sea (2014)
The magic is real
I'am probably the most spoiled member of the public, when it comes to animated movies. Dreamworks and Pixar, well they just buy me with their style of animation, so any other is unacceptable for me, well let me just say how stupid is that. No, rely that is the most stupid thing from me for a while. And for a while I skip to watch "Song of the sea". This movie convinced me that magic is real. Why? Well it make me fell as a child for a hour and some, as long is the movie. It make me to remember all that stories, innocent stories which my grandfather told me before sleep. Thank you for that. I get used to all that action in animated movie, that I forgot that innocent magic piece of a story. "Song of the sea" brings all that to the screen. All the magic, all the story telling beauty, with appropriate animation. Why is this appropriate animation, well if you are born in late '90, you would probably not understand that, but it is time to got it, and the best way for you to got it, is to start watching this movie. It is like all those illustration in Grimm brothers books, and it is so much beautiful that is the shame for me that I didn't look this movie earlier. But I did watched now. And how Japanese say, the best time is now. Maybe this movie is special and for bringing that beautiful idea of early Disney, it is all about making some magic for the audience, it is about making audience to fell special for watching that, I think that that is the some definition of art, and pure art this movie is.
Minions (2015)
The murder of Minions by Universal.....
Like most of, let's called fans, of "Despicable me", I was with great expectation for "Minions". The super, loony, character's.... nothing will go wrong with that, with movie about them, right? Well, I should know better from the start, the very start, when I realized that Minions are not produced by Dream Works, but by Universal. Why is that? Well Universal have that tendency to "overkill" the story, for real. They literally overkill a story about Minions. This "movie" reminded me of a child play. When boy play with his G. I. Joe's or something like that, the story goes with too much blah, it's maybe fun to you when you are the one who is playing, but it is not too much fun to watch someone to do it. It's like some Japanese cartoons on steroid, and that is a murder of something that should be cool, like Minion's. It was just too much of everything, and that everything become a stupid, non funny movie, maybe just fun for director's, who done a lame work, and I don't know, maybe for the writers of this horrible story. From the movie with best potential to become another great movie, with Minions, it become a really terrible movie without incomprehensible plot, and a horrible plot.
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
Boring, boring, stupid, summary very bad
Last sequel of Transformers serial was just as those before, with exception for the first part, just another stupid movie with lame dialog's, story, characters, and with just poor, poor directing. I do understand Michael Bay and his intention to copy style of Spielberg, but this is just sad. Spielberg was a "genius" to put some comedy in action, which is a his signature in Indiana Jones, Gremlins, etc. Spielberg is a executive producer in this movie, but what gone wrong. I think that i do know a answer for this question, Michael Bay is wrong in this movie, and transformers movies before this one. Really who will with a clear mind give a budget of 210 million dollars for this awful, awful movie. I get it that this movie makes profit, it's not questionable, but rally! I don't know, this look like a movie that make five year old boy with his friend's and they are all a fun's of "Dragon ball", all is just too much. To much drama, too much action, too much everything, too much special effects ( I thought that I will never say something like that, as a truly fan of Sci Fi movies) and that "too much" make a movie to be a total mix of crap and boring scenes with lame humor, actually too much lame humor, and serve to audience in nearly three hours. I really don't even know why i watched this movie, well only thing what makes me happy is that i didn't pay to watch it, that is literally only good experience about this movie.
