What are WE if we can't empathize
4 September 2017
I'm not aware of the political, historical, religious & ethnic differences between the people depicted in the movie, but I can still relate to them. I mean not in the literal sense but just on human level.

I think, almost always, majority of the people who are fighting a war are not personally affected by its cause. It's something that's just inculcated in them. They are taught to hate the opposite side.

This movie, with a handful of characters, in just so little words, in such a short time, makes you realize that you can empathize with anyone. You should just have the will to do so. Humanity is capable of so much love that there can be no place left for hatred, but sadly we're too busy fighting, every day, every where, in one or another part of the world.

This is a captivating movie from the first frame to the last. The background score uplifts and complements the mood of the movie so beautifully. The acting is sublime, the direction is top notch. The story is really simple and all the charm is in the storytelling.

It makes you question yourself. Whatever your hate is, if you can learn to empathize, then you've lived a life.

Ugly (2013)
9/10
One of the darkest Indian movies
3 May 2017
I had to make a conscious effort to move, after sitting motionless through the climax and the end credits. I don't recall seeing a darker Indian movie. When the movie ended, I felt UGLYNESS in my soul. That's not supposed to be a good thing, but I imagine that was the purpose.

The story revolves around a 10 year old girl who goes missing. Her biological father is a struggling actor, her mother is an alcoholic and her husband is a top cop. Then there's a guy whose the actor's friend and is a casting director. There are a few more notable characters. The central characters are trying to figure out the whereabouts of the girl, but they all have bones to pick with each other. Here the title comes into play. What's uglier than the supposed kidnapping of the girl is that they all have their vested interests and that they're more keen on satisfying those then actually finding the girl. The journey to the climax brings out the ugliness within these flawed characters. And it's not one for the faint hearted.

Anurag Kashyap is my favorite Indian director of this day and age so I'm always a bit biased towards his movies but Ugly has got to be his finest work till date. The story isn't flawless, but the direction is. Mr. Kashyap succeeds completely in bringing out the ugliness of his characters, who could easily be breathing and walking human beings amongst us, which makes it all the more chilling.

The acting by entire cast was superb. Each and every one of them brought their characters alive on screen. You could feel strongly for them, hate, sorrow, pity and a lot more. The screenplay and editing is tight, dialogues too good and natural. I felt there were 2-3 loopholes and if not for them, the actual story could've been perfect.

All in all a definite 9 out of 10 for me.

John Wick (2014)
8/10
Pure unadulterated action
9 February 2017
John Wick - it's that kind of a character whose name is enough to inflict terror in the minds of people. And whoever isn't terrified doesn't mean that they're better, it just means that they don't know JOHN WICK.

It definitely isn't the first character of it's kind, but very few characters of this kind convince you that they are what they are supposed to be. Let's just say that John Wick kicks a** and he is pretty awesome at that.

I can't think of anyone else to be John Wick other than Keanu Reeves, the guy's living the character on screen. The hand to hand combat, usage of knives and guns, the action, it all seems poetic at times. The thing I loved the most is that there wasn't too much noise, no Boom Boom, just the Bang Bang, exactly what you'd expect from a hit-man.

The cinematography, dialogues, background score, direction, action, everything was just what a movie like this needs. It ticked all the right boxes for me and I think every action movie fan would lap this one up.

It is a great action revenge movie that never runs out of steam throughout it's course. So, everyone who loves to see bullets flying all over the screen, or to quote it better, say hitting just the right spots, go treat yourself to this movie. You'd be glad.

A shallow outcome of a potential material
23 December 2016
In these kind of sports movies you already know the story, so the predictability doesn't bother me that much. I watch them for the journey, for the efforts of the characters, and for their magnetism to pull me into cheering for them. This movie lacked in all these aspects.

The story is nothing new, same old journey of an underdog player and a coach that has problems with the system. This should have been the weakest link of the movie. Everything else had to be better than this 'done a lot of times' story for this movie to be good, but that's not the case.

The screenplay, dialogues, direction, editing, songs, background score and acting, everything seemed forced. It all wanted you to feel that the makers of the movie mean business. That they are making a realistic movie about the problems and harassment faced by women athletes in our sports system. But it failed to evoke those emotions. Every character seemed to be doing things just because the script demanded it. No one seemed to care to connect with the audience. Every scene was just there to make you spoon feed the emotions, be it comedy, drama, or action. The movie lacked a natural flow. It felt as if it was treading a path that was constructed for it.

The - not giving a rat's a** about anything other than one player who seems to be bursting of talent - attitude of Madhavan's character was too unreal. Everyone else too seemed to be acting their parts out rather than being the character.

The portrayal of how things work in a women's sport in India was clichéd. It didn't make you feel for the poor girls at all. The connection that should've been there by the end of the movie with the player and the coach was not there at all.

All in all, it seemed to be a shallow attempt at a story that has been done a lot of times but still has the potential to make your heart feel and cheer for the characters. Pathetic screenplay, poor acting, empty dialogues, shoddy editing, soulless movie.

The worst part is that it's rated a 7.7 on IMDb. And that it is in the top 125 Indian movies on the site.

I'd like to believe Indian cinema is better than that.

Pink (III) (2016)

NO is a complete sentence in itself. Period.
16 November 2016
There are movies that have great plot lines, there are movies that have great actors who make the movie great, there are movies which have great directors. But this is a movie with a great message and one that our Indian society needs to listen, believe and enact upon.

Incidents happen and are forgotten, people speak and they go quiet, mass movements are organized and they fade. But our mindset has not really changed. We still judge a woman's character by the way she dresses, the way she starts to feel comfortable with someone, by the time she steps in and out of home, by her choice of consuming alcohol or not, and the list can grow pretty long.

PINK tries to make that exact same point that any sane society believes in, that we cannot have different set of rules to judge someone's character. One gender cannot be judged by some specific set of rules that do not apply to the other gender. In fact, it isn't even about the gender, judging anyone's character is a crime we all commit when none of us can measure our own selves with the same set of rules in the same scale of balance and come out of it pure and serene.

Now, going towards the movie's review, this movie shouldn't be judged by it's story line, direction, editing, cinematography, or the acting. All of which were commendable in their own way so as to put through the point that the movie was trying to present to the audience precisely. Rather, it should be judged by the fact that our society deeply suffers from this disease of judging a woman's character and act with her in a manner according to the outcome of our judgement as we see fit. The part where Rajveer's character says that everybody present in the courtroom would feel the same way bout girls like these sums up the thought process of a great part of our society.

Amitabh Bachchan's character's expressions in the end personifies the sorry state our country would feel at times like these. When we have to issue a manual about the woman's safety in our society. The points mentioned by Deepak Sehgal that should be there in the manual are cruel but true.

I can go on and on about the greatness and seriousness of the point that the director has tried to put across, but it'd all be for nothing if we'd feel that it was another good movie that made a good point.

We need to change the way we grow up our boys and nurture them with the idea of respecting a woman's modesty and understand the firmness, completeness and absoluteness of the word NO. I wish dearly that I witness this change in our society in this lifetime where movies like PINK are no longer NECESSARY to make us realize that the way we treat women in our somewhat modern society, sometimes, is inhumane.

Going away from the preachy tone of this review I'd like to mention that the acting of all the characters, Amitabh Bachchan, Tapsee Pannu, and the other girls, Kirti and Andrea in fact, especially was just what was required, nothing less nothing more. It was believable and you could feel their helplessness. The direction by Aniruddha Roy Chaudhary was really good.

All in all, for me, this is more than your good , bad, average Bollywood movie. Seemed like a message to be thought and enacted upon, by Shoojit Sircar

A hidden gem!
1 December 2015
I don't know how many of the Indians have even heard of this gem of a movie, let alone having been seen it. There could not be a more surreal depiction of what life can be in old age. Life does not start becoming mundane just because we've passed the reins of our lives and houses to our children. It still has its share of ups and downs. There are going to be days when we feel unwanted, a burden even. We might feel like we don't have anything to live for anymore. But most of the times that isn't how it really is.

We realize the value of anything in life once we get the fear of losing it, whether it be a of a materialistic nature or of an emotional nature. This movie succeeds greatly in raising a turmoil of these feelings within one's heart. You do realize that parents and children, no matter how much they fight or argue, are like electricity(excuse me for a lack of a better comparison) in each other's lives. We wouldn't die without it, but it's absence would be unbearable if it was taken away from us. From an Indian perspective, this movie is an amazing work of art that, if is seen by someone, can make one realize that it doesn't take much to take care of our parents after they've done it for their almost whole functioning lives.

Now, on the creative aspect of the movie-acting was as real as it could be by Pankaj Kumar, Raghubir Yadav and Reema Lagoo also portrayed their characters beautifully. The dialogs were relatable, background music was befitting and the direction was top notch. I hope that movies such as this too may be talked about when counting the gems of Indian Cinema.

One of the best stories I've ever heard, read or seen
4 October 2015
Everything about this movie is so real that I forgot till the end credits rolled that it was indeed a movie. If i was Mr. Mahesh Bhatt & someone asked me what is the most satisfying thing that you did in life, I'd say it was making ZAKHM.

Every single thing about this movie is top notch be it the story, dialogs, direction, editing, music, songs and the top most - acting. Ajay Devgan, Kunal Khemu, Pooja Bhatt, everyone played their parts to perfection. Even the supporting cast of Ashutosh Rana, Saurabh Shukla, Sharat Saxna, Sonali Bendre and everyone else was equally good.

The sensitive topic of communal tension was so beautifully captured in the movie, that I felt ashamed of being a part of the same species that don't hesitate to take someone's life just because they don't share the same religion.

This movie has reinstated my belief that faith is bigger than any religion. We just gotta have faith in humanity, otherwise the insanity that resides within all of us will prevail & that will be the end of 'US'.

I just wish everyone in the world can have the sensitivity towards others faith as Pooja Bhatt's character had in every religion.

Excellent movie, can be watched by anyone anywhere in the world & be felt moved emotionally!

Baby (I) (2015)
6/10
Good intentions, average execution
1 February 2015
Though I'm an admirer of Neeraj Pandey's work, Baby was not among the same league as Special 26 and 'A Wednesday', which was a class apart. Most Indian audiences would like this movie a lot but for me it was a case of an average movie that could've been a great one. There were a lot of loop holes(not particularly plot holes) and it could have been cut short by about 10-15 minutes. Some dialogs seemed as if they've been included just to please the audiences like Akshay's wife saying more than once "Marna mat"(Don't die). In fact she was one of the only miscast of the movie. Started 'not liking' her from her very first scene. First half felt like somewhat dragging, but the second half must've infused interest in the majority.

The movie had its pros too, first of which was the star-cast and the acting. Akshay Kumar was great, which he always is in these kind of roles, and everyone supported hi beautifully, be it the fight sequence from Tapsee Pannu, or the supporting roles of Anupam Kher and Rana Daggubati. Danny Dengzongpa seems to be in the second innings of his career and I'd love for him to play an elongated part in this one. Other good things about this movie were that it seemed good on the technical front and the research behind it bore fruits like the rest of the director's works. Finally, Rasheed Naz must be the perfect person to play 'Maulana Mohammed Rahman'.

I personally liked D-Day, which was based on the similar story-line, a lot better than Baby though the majority might differ. Hence I won't say to stay away from this one, instead go for it and decide for yourself.

Hooks you deep-don't miss it any cost if you're a fan of dark, psychedelic cinema!
11 October 2014
This show has something going on for it that if it's for you, it'd take you to some different level of analyzing yourself and life altogether and if it ain't, then it's your bad luck I'd say.It just grips you from your soul; questions you on every single thing you believe in; plays with your emotions, thoughts; breaks you apart; gather the pieces back up and turns you into a different person.Still confused, aloof, lost, but a bit better I suppose. Everything linked with the show is a genius. The cast, even the tiniest of characters, the lingering music, the locations, the setting, the writing, the story, the direction, everything about it was just flawless. It didn't matter to me whether they were ever gonna solve the murders at all, but just the way the whole thing was building up, watching it all was plain bliss. Only watch this show if you have the taste for something dark, slow paced, deep, layered, intense, but satisfying and fulfilling.I haven't seen anything like this ever though in any genre. This is something that's gonna stay with you for a long long time. And hats off to Woody Harrelson "Martin Hart" and Matthew McConaughey "Rust Cohle" for giving us the pleasure of watching something like this.. If you think it's for you, go for it..It hits the right spot!!

Soulful
15 July 2014
Why did it had to end... The movie was like a breath of fresh air.Every thing about it was so refreshing and soulful that you can never get bored of it.It's one of those movies that you can watch again and again and again...The music, the story, the acting, the direction, the editing, all of it makes this an absolutely beautiful gem of a movie. One of the best movies that i ever saw and will ever see not because it was any different from other movies or better written, directed or acted, but because it's MAGIC, it stays with you.The soul of the movie stays with you beyond the credits. It stays with you forever. I just can't stop smiling remembering the scenes, the smiles on the characters faces, the music... Everybody who wants to FEEL happiness must watch this movie. In one word it's just SOULFUL !!

Dreaded at the thought that human kind ACTUALLY had this kind of livelihood at some point of time..
12 April 2014
Could not gather my thoughts to write this review at the end of the movie.Feeling really bogged down by some heaviness on my chest. Thinking about the times in history when we actually used to do these atrocities on other human beings makes me cringe. To imagine waking up one day and find me in chains just because I'm a colored man and living my life like an unwanted child of god makes me question humanity altogether. Just sitting through a little over than 2 hours and watching this movie made my heart bleed, I can't even begin to think of the people who lived their entire lives as SLAVES... 12 years a slave heart breakingly makes you feel the pain and suffering of almost the entire human kind at one point of time or other. Direction by Steve McQueen is brilliant.Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a helpless slave in Solomon Northup to the hilt and also the small but impactive role played by Brad Pitt as a man with conscience is superb.Lupita Nyong'o's Patsey too was depicted heart warmingly. You can't help but question yourself that how could MAN stoop such low and do these cruel acts and that too over such a prolonged period of time without even a single ounce of doubt in his mind for what he would have to pay for his actions.. All in all a GEM of a movie showing one of the lowest point in human history !

Thought provoking piece of art !!
21 September 2013
CHILDREN OF MEN....How a baby's cry can make the whole world stop, the bullets stop flying in a war, people forget all their pain, the only thing that matters is how to make that precious gift of god smile again..The movie depicts it beautifully! When the world is falling apart, coming to its end, how a THEO does things that he otherwise would have not done for anything or anybody else...It doesn't seems practical that how at every point of time there is somebody to see them sail through, but that is all LIFE is about...HOPE...There's a THEO in everyone of us...It's in our hands...to choose, THEO or Luke...The world will surely end someday but till then we must all protect the CHILDREN OF MEN, protect the world...Do our bit for the mother earth..!!

P.S. - loved the laughter of the babies in the end!!

Scenes I LOVED -

1) When Julian was shot.

2) When Theo thought Jasper was dead.

3) When Dylan was born.

4) When Theo said to Luke "It's a GIRL".

5) When Marichka expressed she isn't coming.

There may be more, but these are all I remembered.

Michael Caine was adorable as always, Julianne Moore was pretty, Clive Owen was perfect, Kee was sweet, Miriam was, don't know, clean...at heart !

Why don't they make THESE movies anymore?
20 September 2013
Apart from being a GREAT courtroom drama(which some people don't think this movie is), this movie is so much FUN and ENTERTAINING to watch.Especially because of the characters of Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester. But Tyrone Power and Marlene Dietrich were convincing too in their portrayal of an innocent, afraid for his life man and a disloyal, unloving, poker faced wife respectively.

Some people might say that they predicted the ending half way down the movie but i am not quite sure as to how the predicted the ACTUAL ENDING before it really unfolded before their eyes?

This movie is great not only in the part played in court but also in the scenes shot in Sir Wilfrid Robarts's office(also due to Miss Plimsoll's caringly lovably irritating character!).

Perhaps the people(the minority I'd like to believe) who don't think this movie deserves the high ranking and rating that it's got here saw this brilliant piece of art as more of a suspense thriller. But I loved this movie as a delightfully ENTERTAINING, MYSTERIOUS, DRAMA !

I rate this 10 just because I haven't seen any other CLASSIC courtroom drama that was intense throughout(barring some light hearted scenes with Sir Wilfrid Robarts) and yet in the end I somehow felt light-hearted and had a smile on my face rather than a thought provoking look on it.

The commentary in the ending credits was innocently adorable for our times of social networking "The management of this theater suggests that for the greater entertainment of your friends who have not yet seen the picture you will not divulge to anyone the secret of the ending of Witness for the Prosecution!

And mind you I am a big fan of 12 Angry Men and How to Kill a Mockingbird! But this movie too is equally good in a different way altogether!

It's much more than JUST rugby
10 July 2013
Though the movie doesn't give much insights into the life of the living legend known as NELSON MANDELA, it sure tells us a lot about what the man is made of.That "we are the master of our fate, we are the captain of our soul".

Forgiveness is a mighty powerful weapon that can make or break nations. How a sport can unite a divided nation into ONE, it is a well known fact but to actually be able to do that in a country like SOUTH Africa,at a time when it was ready to rise from the ashes or to fall into its own crevices lying beneath the surface and ready to torn apart the whole nation again into TWO,is what gives me INSPIRATION to rise whenever i'll fall...

The entire cast is brilliant without going overboard in situations that could've been intense.A truly inspiring movie that can be imprinted in your heart for the rest of your lives if you're ready to FORGIVE people and make this world a better place to live in!

Forget it, I don't care...I LOVE YOU !!
19 April 2013
I can't make out why this movie has been rated JUST a 7 pointer...I guess because people don't find an honest romantic movie equaling an intriguing, exciting, intelligent, thrilling, action packed or any other brain tickling director's master piece..

But to be honest, this movie is climbing the charts on being my favorite movies, and not just the romantics, of all time.Speaking of which i don't even watch too many romantic movies because however beautiful they are they almost always make you feel that the fairy land exists. That's what is so beautiful about SAY ANYTHING that it doesn't make you believe that there is a fairy land instead its so honest and assures you that you really don't need a lot of things to live happily if you've got a person for whom you have love in your heart and the feeling is reciprocated in the exact same manner!! This movie is special in the sense that it was made way back in '89 and still holds the same relevance...because LOVE is TIMELESS...

Do not miss it if you wanna feel what love is in the truest sense of the word... "I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen" - it kills me but if you hold on, you'd find out that she gave the pen because she couldn't give him his love filled heart back !!

A great and successful effort on the director's part to not try and make something special out of this movie because in the end that's what really makes it so special..A 10/10 for sure...one of the best movies about LOVE !!

Gripping!!
14 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Some of you may find (or I should say try to) faults in this gripping courtroom drama but for the rest this movie is a lovely, more than just about courtroom, dual between the ever talented Anthony Hopkins and the not just about looks Ryan Gosling. The chemistry between the two is really difficult to not feel right from the first time in the courtroom where the Hannibal Lecterish Crawford gestures Beachum to adjust his bow tie.It is amazing how the movie grips you despite knowing the fact right from the start who is the killer.Though Crawford is too smart to be believable, the way its played it doesn't raise the slightest of doubt in your mind about its actual existence.Beachum's urge to put the devilish Crawford behind bars for trying to kill his wife and then getting away with it can be seen greatly in the scene in the hospital when Beachum tries to stop Crawford from pulling the plug of his wife's ventilator. The only thing i found missing was the almost lifeless, short lived, romantic relation of Crawford and Nikki Gardner(Rosamund Pike who looks stunning in the movie).Maybe it wouldn't have helped the movie's plot in any way except Crawford's asking for a favor from Gardner's dad later in the movie that's why they didn't put too much efforts to make them a couple. In all a great courtroom, psychological, thrilling, drama with great acting. And i'd better not forget to mention David Strathairn's portrayal of DA Lobruto which was too good and I'd have loved to see more of him... Don't miss this one if you like an intriguing courtroom drama!!

In the name of INNOCENCE !!
8 April 2013
Sometimes i say to myself "this can't happen to me" for the simple reason that it sounds really unfair to be happening..But watching a movie like this changes all perception of right and wrong, fair and unfair.. Only thing that can be fair in this world is your HEART !!

Though Daniel Day Lewis' character is not your typical role model from the start, you know that the Heart within isn't black (more so from a scene just before he says 'In all my godforsaken life, I've never known what it was to kill somebody until now')..The transformation of Day Lewis' character from a man who wasn't responsible enough to take care of himself to a man who vows to fight for his father's name is brilliantly heartwarming!

It just pains me to see how cruel 'WE' as a species can be to not accept our mistakes, even when we know that it can make someone's life miserable than HELL!!

In all the movie is good till the time you don't think of it as someone's life being played out in front of you.As soon as you realize that,it transforms into something you cant just think of as just another brilliant movie.Instead your heart goes out to the people who actually had to go through all this..

Well directed, superbly acted, brilliant, heart breaking and heart warming at the same time !!

Those who found it beautiful can go for 'Conviction' as their next choice of another heartwarming 'eye treat' !

Given I am a big fan of Quentin's works i knew this movie would be a treat to watch. But what i didn't know was violence can be so COOL... The movie is a treat to watch(including the blood and gore) from starting to end.The acting is superb. And the cinematography is just too good! The whole cast played their parts to perfection...Especially Samuel L. Jackson and Jamie Foxx..Leo and Christopher Waltz were superb too..And as Christopher said in the movie - "It was hard to RESIST".A must watch for everyone who likes QUALITY cinema..Even the ones who cant stand BOOMs and BANGs, you wouldn't regret spending about 3 hours watching this well written, well directed and well acted GREAT movie !!
