The Orville (2017)
wasn't convinced. gave it a second chance... not bad!
the first two episodes are slow, they are really bad. i would actually suggest you only watch the first episode to know about mercer and the crew. skip episode 2 definitely. i decided the show wasn't for me. but after hearing about the following episodes being better i decided i'd give it a second shot.
i skipped directly to episode 4. and i do recommend the show, it changed my mind. the characters are all charming. except for the second in command - which is a cheating spouse who makes excuses and expects the audience to feel sympathetic towards her cheating on her husband. (not a spoiler this is in the first moments of the first episode)
so far i am not finding her story likable. but the character herself is not that bad.
i'm giving the orville a 7, because i can't give it a 6.5
Small Wonder (1985)
not bad
i just saw an episode and it surprisingly holds up. the humor is there, a classic formula for comedy, based on setup and payoff that strangely feels refreshing in the current age of television, despite the canned laughs - this is no big bang theory, the laugh track is not merely masking the show's shortcomings, but - like a drummer, seem to be used to accentuate the punchline. at the end of the day it is no masterpiece, the parents are awfully awkward, but the kid actors are great. especially the episodes where you get to see vicky at school. the show accomplishes everything it sets out to do and then some. i recommend wasting time with this instead of reality television
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Welcome Peter Parker, for the first time - to the big screen
i have spent hours and hours in years past - probably hundreds, reading and re-reading the comic books of the 1980s, the golden age of marvel comics, and the golden age of spider man. Spiderman is indeed the greatest superhero of marvel comics, possibly the greatest superhero ever created. he's a proxy for the audience, a way to make a hero relatable - his life has very pronounced ups and downs, and when it's time to show courage he has it in spades. he's both awkward, but can be funny. he is insecure, more human than other superheros. this movie version delivers on the spirit of the best run of comics books. the movie includes some of the greatest moments from the comic book such as peter overcoming his helplessness and gathering all of his strength. you can tell marvel did not reboot the character just to make a buck, they took great care to craft a good story, it has the signature marvel humor which is always nice, Jon favreau is good in it, while Robert Downy Jr. makes one of his best appearances as tony stark in a sort of father figure for peter and it is quite nice. Marisa tomei makes a surprisingly great, uncharacteristically sexy aunt may. which worked very well. peter's love interest is stupidly gorgeous and she kept me enthralled whenever she was on screen. peter's sidekick is also great, and the casting for peter was quite good, he nailed peter's personality overall. the villain was very charismatic and a great performance by Michael Keaton who was recently nominated for an academy award. in fact the whole cast of actors is just perfect. the only reason i am not giving this movie better score than an eight is because i think they can really kick this into overdrive with a sequel, if they don't rush to make a trilogy. there's some social commentary that i thought it was a bit much. other than that - amazing movie, must watch.
Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)
cannot praise this movie enough
I'm not rating it a 9 or 10 because it's not apocalypse now or the good the bad and the ugly.
First of all if you're expecting a time travel epic don't look here, you should know better once checking out the cast and reading Aubrey plaza's name. It's a light hearted film, a comedy and a romance, but i wouldn't call it a romantic comedy (due to all the clichés that come to mind and that people tend to associate with the so called 'genre' which has been already run to the ground).
If you're clear on what the genre of this movie is and still want to give it a go, i highly recommend it.
The chemistry between all the characters is just superb as is their acting; Their journey is satisfying and their heartbreak is palpable, there are no dislikeable characters even if they start out being very annoying, which i think is one of the biggest strengths of this movie.
It manages to take you from not caring at all to hanging on the edge of your seat surprisingly quickly.
They say moviegoers gave a standing ovation at sundance and it doesn't surprise me one bit. the director of this film had a passion for telling a story and the low budget didn't get in the way of anything that it set out to accomplish, which is something to admire.
Truly, an independent masterpiece and i'll definitely keep an eye out for the upcoming work of everyone who was involved.
