Star Trek: Prodigy (2021–2024)

I'm no trekkie but ....
26 January 2024
OK I'm 58 and have always enjoyed Star Trek from the original right up to now. However, I'm not a Trekkie. It's simply always been part of my generations entertainment. Something that has been constant in many movies and shows. I haven't liked all of them either. So no allegiance from me.

I did watch this show and I haven't got a clue why. Even seeing Nickelodeon put me off. It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable Star Trek "spin offs" I've seen.

If you're unsure, stick with it. The characters develop and become very strong. The story is good, the animation a little clunky but overall one of the best series we've seen and we enjoyed it immensely. Don't click past, give it a shot and I hope there will be someone who will take up the show for another season.

Loki (2021–2023)

Getting their money's worth from the sets
7 July 2021
It's just shocking. If you love the carachter of Loki, you'll hate what they've done to him. Gone are the smart and interesting links to other marvel universes. Gone is Loki's spirit and imagination. The saddest and the most irritatingly boring part are the sets. Repetitively used again and again and again ..... and again and again.

Even fixing the camera to the cameraman's shoes doesn't seem to provide enough interest ... unless you're into nostrils. If you are, you'll love it!

The Crown: Aberfan (2019)
Season 3, Episode 3

Perhaps one of the greatest episodes of any TV show
19 November 2019
You simply have to watch it. It will be something you will remember for an extremely long time. The acting is beyond superb from every member of the cast. Olivia Coleman deserves an award simply for the last five minutes. In my eyes those few moments of her performance have lifted her from a good actress to great actress. I now understand why she receives so much praise.

I'm lost for words but I will remember that for a very long time. We couldn't watch the following episode, it felt disrespectful to do so. It is that powerful.

Gods of Egypt (2016)

A feast for the eyes, a nightmare for your ears.
2 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
May the gods forgive the producers, directors and actors for this absolute travesty of a movie.

Stunning to look at the film is purely an adventure in CGI and experimenting with 3D scenes and imagery. I'm sad, this genre is usually my favourite ... you know something to lose yourself in of an evening. An event where you leave the theatre "glamoured" by the sheer spectacle of seeing such wondrous sets and excitement. Alas not for me, it was a joy to watch but would have been so much better with the sound off and radio four on instead. Honestly, the script is so tragic with all the subtle nuances of Dora the Explorer. Imagine Thor with a screenplay written by Enid Blyton ... getting the idea? It'seems the script, it is truly insulting.

See it at your peril, remember, you can give your time easily but you won't get your 2hrs 7mins back. Imagine what worthwhile things you could achieve in that time. Wait for the Christmas showing on your local TV channel. At least you can escape to make a cup of tea xxx

Just Awful
10 August 2015
We can't even find the words to say just how poor this is. We're not saying don't don't watch it, but don't say we didn't tell you so. When you want those wasted 92 minutes back ... oops!

Terrible plot. We thought we'd missed a big chunk of storyline ... sadly we hadn't.

Dreadful characterization. We thought we'd missed some amazing acting ... sadly we hadn't.

The start of something big ... perhaps the producers etc. are thinking of a sequel and producing massive ranges of merchandise in time for Christmas. Sadly they probably will.

Dark yet light of heart
5 April 2013
Oh the people who bemoan a movie because it's not like the book. Let's be honest, that's almost impossible when a book is read and brought to life by the readers imagination. I usually find that if a viewer wants it to be exactly like a book .... their imagination is lacking. This movie takes the essence and gives it form and beautifully too.

Take this movie for what it is and enjoy. A playful spin on the closed minds of a small highly religious town that have no concept or acceptance of anything new or different. Beautiful to look at, wonderful to listen to. The script is nutshell tight and quick witted .... my favorite line?

"I pray, each night, that you will NOT be going to hell"

"Oh, I'll be going to Hell .... via New York"

It isn't Twilight and shouldn't even be compared to it. For starters, the acting's good and it's subtle enough to actually be believable.

Reminded me of The Lovely Bones, and this is sharp and intelligent but for me it was the script that thrilled. A very snappy movie that was well worth the 117 minutes of my time.

Dark Skies (2013)

Unimaginably tiresome
5 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie in high hopes of seeing something different, visually exciting and with a storyline that would intrigue and capture my imagination. Sadly it didn't deliver on any level.

Perhaps I'm of an age where I remember too many movies that have come before because, to be honest, this was a mish mash of other story lines and it wasn't done well.

If you've seen Close Encounters, Paranormal Activity, Alfred Hitchcocks "the Birds" and just about any unsatisfying documentary about Alien abduction then you've seen this movie already. It was deeply un- entertaining. It's simply impossible gather any sympathy for the characters or their plight. Wooden, stilted, slow, unoriginal and dull would just about sum it up.

I quite enjoy a slow movie that builds up the suspense and draws you in .... taking it's time to tease you into believing one thing and then delivering a surprise twist. The only surprise was I yawned so much. I know most people will just say, "you didn't have to watch it you know" but I did, I believe in giving a movie the respect and opportunity to entertain. Sadly, this movie doesn't return the favor. By the end you're just completely bemused as to why, if aliens were to visit, they would prey on such a tediously tiresome family.

No budget, however small, can excuse a poor storyline. That is the basic starting point of any movie. It seemed as if someone had seen Close Encounters, forgotten all about it and suddenly thought "OOOH here's an idea!"

Sorry, but it was awful.
