Love, Death & Robots (2019)
What a missed opportunity
Although I'd still say that this season is worth watching, I have to also say that it is most definitely nowhere near as good as season 1.
First of all, stories of S2 are best described as "meah". Aside from the e3 and e4 (that were somewhat interesting and\or thought-provoking) and e6 that made me chuckle a bit, the rest are completely forgettable.
Second, this season seams to be positively muted in terms of sheer madness and creative scope of the first one. Why this is would be anybody's guess, but my sense is that the network decided to play it safe instead of embracing the sometimes-provocative insanity of the first season.
Finally, this season contains less than half the number of episodes of the first one, why??? I get not being able to film real actors during the time of the pandemic, but what was stopping a bunch of IT and CGI pros from creating a bunch of episodes while sitting comfortably in front of their computer screens at home...truly beyond me.
So here we are, still enjoyable to watch, but doesn't even begin to hold a candle to the first season. What a shame, such a missed opportunity.
Boss Level (2020)
Surprisingly good
This is my first proper review. Could never be bothered to write one up before, but this film surprised the hell out of me, so here we go.
I came to this film expecting another popcorn flick at best. Yet another variation on the "Groundhog Day" of which we have seen a million. At first glance, this film seems exactly like that, but you have to stick with it to the end to fully appreciate its depth.
It's fun and action packed, it has a lot of low-brow humor, the main character appers to be just a macho smart-mouthed guy past his glory days seeking to correct his regret ridden past. You've seen this story many times before, but the devil, as they say, is in the details. And the details make this film not just a good action flick, but a great film in general. If you stick with this film to the end, you will realize that the main character and his motivations are surprisingly deep and you will not regret the time spent watching this. Unlike most modern films you actually get the full hero's journey here and what a journey it is! From a selfish seld-absorned man to a savior of humanity! I'm being vague on purpose here, because I don't want to spoil the story for anybody.
To sum up: Action: Good, seen better, but good nonetheless.
Acting: Excellent across the board, especially Frank Grillo. Didn't expect this much range from him!
Story: Simple, yet satisfying.
Production value: Great. Expected another forgetfull nonesense....got one of the best action films I've seen in my life.
The Rookie (2018)
Great start, but downhill from S03
Loved the show. It was different enough from the other cop dramas to make it interesting + the Nathan is amazing everywhere he plays. First 2 seasons were very enjoyable, but the last one went full BLM. Most people don't watch TV shows for political commentery, they watch it to be entertained (I'm one of them). Still, will keep an eye on this show. But unless they get politics out of here, I'm done with it.
