Pacific Rim (2013)
Phenomenal Movie!
I have always enjoy Mecha animes growing up, so obviously I am a little biased. But anyways...
What really sets this apart for me is the human factor. When you put a human as a pilot of a colossal machine, you add their emotion and feelings into it. We can connect and feel more for characters that look like us, sad as that may seem. So even if the characters are little basic, we still know how much is at stake and what they are feeling. Although, I do wish they would have explored Raleigh's personal struggles more, because I mean, he watched his brother die while he was still connected to him. I'm pretty sure that would mess up someone quite a bit. I also wish that Gypsy Danger was more of a last resort for him, with him being hesitant to get back in it. But anyways, I digress. What I'm trying to say is, although the characters don't have much depth, the movie still plays well.
And while it is big and loud, it is still infinitely better than the atrocity that is Transformers. By making the Jaegers and Kaiju have less moving parts, you can actually tell what is going on in the fight scenes. Lots of action, very good soundtrack. And even a little comedy with Charlie Day.
Even though it was very predictable, I still enjoyed it very much. I would highly recommend it.
Spring Breakers (2012)
Should not be more than a 1/10
If you want highly stylized cinematography, this is a fine example. However, that is the only good thing. This move has absolutely no content. It drags along for what seems like an eternity, while monologues play over B roll of teens partying and behaving badly.
The main plot revolves around girls wanting something different, so they go on spring break. They realize that the partying/thug lifestyle is not what they wanted, although they realize this at different intervals. One leaves right at the beginning, the other after being shot, and the last two after killing a number of people and kissing a dead James Franco.
Overall, this move just does not have enough to it.
And I swear, if I have to hear "Spring Break" whispered one more time, I will break something.
Pretty Little Liars (2010)
Why do so many people enjoy this show?
Each week people are drawn in with countless trailers for next weeks' episode, which promises mystery, drama, and most of all, answers to those burning questions you might have. But when the episode finally airs, none of those things occur. You find yourself sitting through an hour of mind numbingly bad acting, extremely illogical thinking, slow moving plots, and even more unanswered questions. I began watching this show because my fiancé enjoys it, so I figured I would give it a chance. But like all ABC Family shows, it lacks everything that makes a show good. None of the characters are likable, nor do they behave like a normal person would. The plot is so slow, I could probably skip 3 seasons and they still won't know who A is. If the books are to be followed, then Ali is still alive. My questions are: Why does she hate the liars so much? How is she everywhere, and how does she have everything already planned out? Why doesn't she just kill the liars? My major beef with this show is they are trying to drag it out and get as many viewers as possible. They're doing it in the wrong way though. A mystery show is supposed to give you clues, substantial ones. I don't mind that they ask questions, but they need to answer them as well. Also, the characters need to not be so stupid. I feel like I'm watching a B grade horror movie where they characters always do the opposite of what a normal human would do.
Piranha 3DD (2012)
Easily one of the worst movies I have ever seen...
If I could go lower than 1 star, you can bet I would. I bought this movie for a dollar from Family Video so I could get the full benefits of a 10 for $10 deal, and soon realized I wanted my dollar back. This movie is very short, which is really the only good thing about it. The plot (if you could call it that), involves piranha that eat pretty much anything and find their way into a adult theme park run by Champ Kind from Anchorman, who manages to play the same character in every film he is in. Almost every girl in this movie has her boobs out, and I began to get the feeling it was written by a couple of 12 year old boys. And then at the end, the fish somehow start learning how to walk and jump high enough to bite an entire little boys head off. Not sure how it managed to get it's mouth big enough to do that, but whatever. Also, they had to throw the Hoff in there. Please just save your money. That's all I can say.
