Loki: Science/Fiction (2023)
Weaving it together
Finally something that gives back this warm feeling that was so appealing in the first season. A story more based on the glue between characters than on just running around in exotic sceneries. Hopefully the last part keeps up this high level where you can really feel that lives matter. Also a fresh counterpart to the previous episode. Season 01 also had these surprising contrasts between the episodes. Luckily the actors also didn't overdo it this time with being theatrical which made them much more palatable after portraying all those extroverted characters they are at the TVA. Glad that this bunch of great actors were not again wasted on some typical Marvel Hitandruncatchmeifyoucan episode. It had some more artistic moments definitely reminding one of the last Oscar winner.
Kajillionaire (2020)
American Horror Allegory
The main focal point of this movie is a pink foam constantly pouring from the wall of the family home. Trying to always wipe it away casually this family also does pretend to be more normal and more aware of the difficulties of modern day life than anybody else. The foam looks innocent but it has something overwhelming and very intimidating to it. The Happy End seems to be constructed so that it is just there to not leave space for more darker feelings to come up. All is wrapped up very charmingly. It creates hope.
Hannah: Buddhism's Untold Journey (2014)
Wonderful documentary going deep into the heart of Tibetan Buddhism
Very well made documentary showing the life of Hannah Nydahl, a student of the 16. Karmapa and wife to the Buddhist teacher Lama Ole Nydahl. Definitely a must watch for all interested in the period after Buddhism got nearly extinguished in the Tibetan mountains. The devotion of Hannah and her husband moved mountains and helped Vajrayana Buddhism to survive the genocide the Chinese brought over Tibet.
Hannah Nydahl was one of the few Westerners who at the time of Flower Power could recognize the vast values and qualities of Buddhist practice beyond all exotica. Her activity to give a broad audience the access to the Tantric teachings of Buddhism is touching and really inspiring. The documentary wins with its authentic protagonists and the historical footage of Buddhism spreading from the Himalayas to the West.
American Hustle (2013)
The Antiheld
The plot: doesn't matter. The music: doesn't matter. The costumes: whatever. This is not a movie for American people. This is a movie for people who know Woyzeck. The joy beyond drama inside the characters is the Appealing that gets the movie together. The funny thing of being sad was never better played. A kiss between two women never said more about life and the play of emotions before. This movie is an ode to female wisdom. Forget about gangsters, the Mob, Atlantic City, corrupt politicians, these are just side stories. The only topic of the movie is our own hopes and fears we have to deal with, whether our game is big or small. It just doesn't matter.
Side Effects (2013)
more fun than expected
What was a bit strange was the changing of moods in the movie. It all began with a slow paced, seriously depressive atmosphere and in the end there was this 'Jude Law is Sherlock Holmes Feeling' which gave the movie quite a Schadenfreude comedic Twist. The last part could have been a bit stronger, maybe should have stayed a bit darker. Law looks quite often like saying: I know now..., I know what this riddle is about.... But: in a way the movie is entertaining because the actors are so differently influencing the atmosphere. Law is a bit nerdy, Mara Plays sooo serious like the Dragon Tattoo is still on and when Zeta-Jones appeared it always looked like a Comedy for me.
