Christina Lindberg Forever!
2 February 2008
****SPOILERS****

...My continuing quest to see every film that Sweden's stunningly beautiful Christina Lindberg ever made has brought me here to this extremely rare film. Sadly again, the version of the film I have has no English subtitles.

The plot: Christina, on arriving in Japan, acquaints a Japanese man at the airport who looks like a sap. He takes her to his apartment where he brutally rapes her and keeps her hostage and bound in chains. Christina's alluring beauty eventually enchants the rapist and he is soon consulting his 'How to Stimulate a Woman' sex book in an effort to please her... Of course, our girl exploits this weakness and manages to escape. She then finds her way to a nightclub and to cut a long story short is ganged-banged by some odd-looking characters. Christina is not having a lot of luck is she, poor girl! The Japanese man (who seems to have fallen in love with her), finds her walking the streets barefooted and in a terrible state. So he takes her back to his place and tries his best to bring her out of her depressive state of mind but with no avail. He eventually orders her to go but it seems Christina has developed a 'Stockholm Syndrome' and refuses to leave. They then live together quite happily until some gangsters arrive to shatter their domestic bliss...

Listen, who cares about the ridiculous plot as most will only be watching this film to see Christina in action. Now on to the important stuff. There is some soft-core sex on show and a couple of rape scenes which are not particularly explicit. We get plenty of fantastic close-ups of Christina's adorable face. I don't think she has ever looked more enchanting as she does in this film -- amazing! 'Journey to Japan' its English title is also quite artistically shot which is a plus point. The bottom line: For die-hard Christina Lindberg fans this is a must-see film. For anyone else? Why are you even reading this!

Arsenal FC: 501 Goals (2004 Video)

501 Goals, Yes, But Never Forget One Goal From Rocky Rocastle....
29 December 2007
David Rocastle 1967 - 2001 R.I.P.

...Around twenty years ago, when Snowy was still a young teen, we played Spurs in the Semi-Final of the League Cup. At the time, winning the League Championship seemed an impossible dream. All that mattered to Snowy was being the best team in North London, and for much of the nineteen eighties, Spurs had the best players and played the better football. For virtually all of that Semi-Final Spurs were in front, until the final minutes of the replay at White Hart Lane, when David Rocastle scored the dramatic winner. That goal changed everything. Snowy knows, he was one of those twenty thousand plus Gooners crammed into the South Terrace. It was his "Woodstock", an occasion that will never be forgotten by any Arsenal fan that was fortunate enough to be there. In the Final at the Old Wembley, Snowy's brother and he watched as another North Bank idol, Charlie Nicholas, scored twice to clinch the Cup against the then mighty Liverpool. A year or two later, Arsenal (without Snowy, he was still at school and his parents would not let him travel to Liverpool), achieved an even greater feat, by clinching the League Championship with the last kick of the season at Anfield. Our first league title since 1971 was won in Liverpool, but make no mistake, the victory was forged on that momentous night in North London at White Hart Lane.

Since that time, with Mr Wenger, we have gone on to another level. However: Always remember the importance of Rocky's Goal. Sing his name proudly at Ashburton Grove and never forget the part he played in restoring our pride and self-belief.

The Woman in Black (1989 TV Movie)
10/10
Psychological Terror At Its Finest...
24 December 2007
...On stage, TV or in a book, 'The Woman in Black' is an outstanding ghost story. Other reviewers have already said just about all there is to say about this film, but I thought I would add my belated little review too. The made-for-TV movie has a deliberately slow first act, which chronicles the main character Arthur as he goes about his business as a solicitor in 1920s London. I can understand why this might not appeal to all palates. Nevertheless, for me, I love this British-style of storytelling similar to any of the BBC's "Ghost Story for Christmas" adaptations of the great M.R. James' work. In the second act, the ghost story kicks in as Arthur is sent to the provinces by his boss, to tidy up the affairs of a deceased client. The third act relentlessly builds up to a spine-tingling conclusion... As a Londoner, I have seen the play. I own the book, DVD-R and have the unabridged audio book on my iPod, too. What is sure for me, 'The Women in Black' on any medium is a ghost story with few equals. It is about time that we had a legitimate region 2 DVD release.

...My Report On 'Sex At The Olympics'
24 December 2007
...My quest to see every film that the delectable Christina Lindberg ever made has brought me here to this German-made sex comedy. The version of the film that I have is dubbed in German, so I could not make out too much about what was going on. Anyway, I will give it a go. What you get are five different segments, which include:

I did not have a clue what the first part is all about but there is a top-looking bird to keep you interested!

The second episode is about a lecherous boss who tries to force himself onto his reluctant secretary. The boss, after not getting his way with the blonde-haired woman, responds to an ad in the local paper for a massage -- and guess who is moonlighting in her lunch break. I have to say that the blonde girl is gorgeous, (although still not a patch on Christina), and that this was my favourite segment.

The third report is about an au pair who is involved in a love-triangle with both the parents of the child that she is looking after. You get some girl-on-girl soft-core action along with a quite erotic scene with the child's father.

At last, we get to Christina's episode. As I don't speak German, this is the second most difficult story to understand but I will give it a go. Christina's character arrives in the city with insufficient money to book a hotel room. Therefore, she takes a job at an escort agency and her first escort is some Jabba-the-Hut-looking tosser who tries to rape her. Now that sounds familiar! Luckily for the fat businessman, Christina is not in "one-eye" mode, so he escapes with his life. Her boss is not too happy so he sends her to work in a brothel. Where she gets up to all sorts with her various clients, which include; a man who wants to play drill-sergeant and another man that wants her to ride him like a horse. Hilarious stuff.

The last segment is about two models that arrive in the city and their various assignments. The girls get up to plenty of shenanigans in this episode to 'round things off.

I have not seen the other schoolgirl report-type films so I cannot compare this film with them. I notice that the other reviewer states that the girls in this film are not as attractive. Wow, I thought the actresses in 'Sex at the Olympics' where stunning looking seventies Euro babes. It looks like I will be checking out the rest then! Quite frankly, see this film to admire Christina Lindberg, as she elegantly flounces around with her jugs and kettle on display. No one, apart from maybe Edwige Fenech, did it better!

Have You Seen That Girl Yet?
13 December 2007
How do I start? I love this film! OK, now that I have got that off my chest... Unfortunately, 'A Girl to Kill For' is a very rarely seen film and the only feature that the stunning Ms Medak ever appeared in, and that is a travesty! I first saw this movie in the early nineties on one of those late night movie channels. Most of the films shown on those channels were so bad that I would fall asleep within 10 minutes of the opening credits. However, none of those films featured Karen Medak. The girl had presence, a body to die for and was not shy about showing it either. Are you sold yet? Well you should be! This film is all about its star and the only reason that you should move heaven and earth to find the long-deleted VHS. Then, maybe you too, will have seen the 'girl' to kill for -- fictionally speaking of course!

Don't Mess With Christina...
11 December 2007
...I cannot say a lot about the film as the version I have is in its original language with no subtitles. That is a shame because Christina's character Lena had a lot of dialogue and it would have been interesting to hear what she had to say. Anyway, Christina plays a young girl who after a row with her boyfriend hitchhikes across the countryside in Sweden, meets up with a couple of nudist, and spends some time at their log cabin. Her boyfriend eventually finds her and takes her back to the city where unbeknown to him she continues an affair with a more older and perverted man.

Exponerad is quite surreal and is told in flashbacks and dreamlike sequences. There is a lot of nudity; Christina spends most of her time in various states of undress and you get a bondage scene and an attempted rape on our beautiful heroine too. I notice that IMDb has a tag line for this film that states that it was banned in 36 countries. After watching this film I have to add that if that statement is true then I cannot see why. There is nothing too explicit on show to warrant that.

So, If you are a Christina Lindberg fan, like me, then seek out this film. You will not be disappointed. For anyone else or anybody expecting an exploitation classic along the lines of 'Thriller: a Cruel Picture'. I would have to say that you should move along. There is nothing of any interest for you here.

Making Its First Appearance On DVD...
5 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I have to say that before I comment on this title that I am a fan of Sergio Martino's films. Particularly 'Torso', which I rate as one of the greatest of all Italian horror films. Therefore, my enthusiasm for this film and my high rating should be taken with a pinch of salt by anyone looking for a classic giallo. This is no 'Solange'. In fact, this film could easily slip into the comedy-action-thriller genre. In its defence, I would say that it does have gorgeous topless girls savagely murdered in fantastic close-up and a catchy score too. Therefore, there is enough to keep fans of the genre interested. But, and it is a big but, there is no mystery element as we see the killer's face in all the death scenes. Are you still keen? Then read on.

The plot: A young hooker is discovered savagely murdered by inspector Germi, played by Claudio Cassinelli. He then embarks on a rather unorthodox investigation in search of the killer. Along the way, he happens to enlist the services of Giannino, a little pickpocket, and they both proceed to uncover a teenaged girl trafficking ring with connections that lead all the way up to the top.

There are some fine comedy moments in this film. How about this little exchange between Germi and a young woman he is questioning, to wet your appetite? "I'm collecting Stamps." – "Oh yeah? Far out. Then stick one on your ass and send yourself to New York 'cause you're getting on my nerves." If this is your kind of comedy then there is plenty more where that came from. I only wish that the jokes and slapstick could have continued throughout the film.

Sazuma present the film restored and in 16:9 anamorphic widescreen. You get the original Italian language soundtrack with English, German and Dutch subtitles; along with a feature commentary by film critics Christian Kebler and Robert Zion. A featurette titled 'Crime Scene Milan', the Italian trailer and a poster gallery complete the package.

The bottom-line? Yes, it is a peculiar film and in no way can it rank alongside 'Torso', 'Excite Me' or 'The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh'. Nevertheless, for Sergio Martino fans and must-see-every giallo types, this has to be a must-buy DVD.

Death Game (1977)

A Three-Way To Remember...
7 January 2007
...Imagine this. On one dark, rainy night, two sexy young blonde girls show up on your doorstep, soaked to the skin. They feed you some sob story about being lost and, being the trusting gentleman that you are, you invite them in. Once inside, the flirtatious girls waste no time striping seductively to their underwear. One thing leads to another and before you know it, the three of you are in your hot tub.... This might sound like every red-blooded man's fantasy but the next morning things turn nasty. Those sweet girls turn "psycho girl" on you. They tie you up, slap on some freakish make-up and proceed to inflict their sickening mind games on you. Will you live to regret your night of three-way nookie? That is basically what this film is about. It is no masterpiece of drive-in cinema but well worth seeing if you enjoy those kinds of low-budget movies. Fans of Nikos Nikoladis' 'Singapore Sling' might also want to give this a look. Both films have the same basic premise and some might come to realise that 'Sling' is not so original after all. Although do not go expecting the same amount of sleaze as 'Sling'. Also, look out for one of the best 'what-the-hell' endings you will ever see.

Nostalgic Trips Down The Video Game Lane
24 December 2006
I stumbled across this fascinating documentary in a supermarket bargain bin -- And I am glad that I did! It charts the history of the video/computer/console game from its humble beginnings to today's online multi-player super games. It is all there from Space Invaders and Defender to Halo and Doom. You will learn how companies like Atari, Nintendo, Activision and Electronic Arts came into existence. Along with the games consoles that fell by the wayside; anyone remember Mattel's Intellivision? You also get a few interviews with some of the pioneers from the early days mixed in with classic game footage. More recent games and game developers are also included.

Tony Hawk, probably to appeal to the younger gamers out there hosts it. Do not let that put you off though! At over two hours long this TV documentary is well worth seeking out.

Night of Fear (1973)
9/10
Probably Australia's First Horror Film.
29 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Night of Fear was supposed to be the pilot for a twelve-part anthology series titled 'Fright'. That series never saw the light of day. Night of Fear went on to become Australia's most controversial film of the '70s. The censor, who banned the movie, branded it "indecent" and "obscene". Which led to the film's producers fighting a long and defiant battle before it could be shown in theatres. It then remained unseen for 30 years until its DVD release.

This is a very interesting film in the style of 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', which incidentally it predates by a couple of years. It tells the story of a young woman who takes a ride into the Australian countryside. She takes a wrong turn, hits a bump in the road and crashes her car near a ramshackle lodge, where a redneck psychopath lives with a colony of rats. The girl is then stalked and terrorised throughout the rest of the film. I should also mention that since this was the pilot for the proposed anthology series. It still carries the original title 'Fright' in the opening credits and has run time of 50 minutes. Oh, I nearly forgot...there is no dialogue whatsoever in the film.

I enjoyed this film: it is relatively tame by today's standards but has a bit of nudity along with a quite bizarre scene involving a human skull. The beautiful Carla Hoogeveen gives a great performance as 'The Woman', throwing herself right into the part. If you are a fan of 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' or 1970s exploitation films in general, you might want to give it a look.

The Place of the Dead (1997 TV Movie)
10/10
A True Story...
16 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
In a time gone by, there was said to be a powerful dragon guarding a beautiful pearl at the very top of Low's Gully. In the 19th Century a Chinese expedition attempted unsuccessfully to steal the gemstone from the mythical monster. The wise dragon then laid down a curse on the Chinese and anybody else that foolishly dared to set foot in the gully again –- they would be doomed…

In February 1994 a British Army expedition comprising of two officers, five NCOs and three Hong Kong Chinese soldiers set out to become the first to climb Mount Kinabalu and enter and conquer Low's Gully.

During the accent of the mountain the men split acrimoniously into two groups of five. The fitter soldiers pushing on up to the 13450 ft summit whilst the slower men including the two officers laboured far behind. On the summit, the advance party decided not to wait for the other group to catch up. They descended north into Easy Gully (a hanging (jungle-infested) valley above Low's Gully); to the edge of a 500 ft vertical rock face requiring an 8 pitch abseil down; before negotiating a mile long section of waterfalls and rapids (also needing abseils), just to reach the head of Low's Gully. Dropping 2000 feet in the process –- there was no going back…

The slower group, led by Lt. Col. Robert Neil also entered the gully, but by now they had been left to try and navigate out of the treacherous gorge by themselves…

The expedition made world headlines when it ended in disaster, with all the men lucky to escape alive from the Place of the Dead…

On September 20th 1994 Major General Patrick Cordingley took the unusual step of publicly announcing the findings of an Army Board of Inquiry into Operation Gully Heights. Lieutenant Colonel Robert Neil and Major Ronald Foster were both severely criticised. The Inquiry said their leadership and judgement had been "flawed and over-ambitious". Corporal Hugh Brittan, Lance Corporals Richard Mayfield and Yiu Keung Cheung each received commendations for their conduct, bravery and leadership in Low's Gully.

This film is a dramatisation of those events; which was shown on British television in 1997. A follow-up documentary titled 'Return to the Place of the Dead'. With two of the men, Richard Mayfield and Robert Mann returning back to the gully (by helicopter and with a local guide); to search unsuccessfully for lost video tapes they filmed during the expedition, was also aired a few days after the film.
