Event Horizon (1997)
I cried
I was about 18 when I first saw this. Not
Long after it's release. I was at home. Watching it with my mum. All I remember is this intense feeling of fear and dread and when it ended I burst into tears and just kept saying "I don't like it mum. I didn't like it. I don't like it mum". Like some demented freak. It took me several years (I was about 21) to pluck up the courage to watch it again. This time it was with my dad. And it didn't have the same effect. I remember wondering why I was so shaken up the first time. However, I have never watched it since. The vhs is still on my shelf. Staring at me. Luring me to watch it again. But I can't bring myself to as I recall how I felt the first time.
I am a hardened horror fan. I've watched martyrs. Centipede trilogy. Frontiers. Inside. Audition. And many other movies considered to be extreme cinema. And nothing has ever made me feel the way EH did. The fact at 42 I am still hesitant to watch it again is crazy to me. I don't know if I am just being stupid. Or if it's really that impacting. Give it a whirl and see for yourself. But don't blame me if you end up rocking backwards and forwards crying like I did at 17. (Facepalm)
Malignant (2021)
Pleasantly surprised
Really enjoyed this. Surprisingly.
Few plot holes. But try not to worry. Lots of blood and action to keep you distracted from the off bits. I guessed the "twist" pretty early on. Well, that it was her, maybe not about the "imbedded twin parasite"!!
Only glaring plot hole I can't ignore is how did "he" call the cops when "she" was being interviewed in the room with them? They are the same person. It's impossible.
On the whole tho. Really enjoyable move. I'd recommend. Lots of gore. Minimal scares. Not really a horror. More like a thriller with blood.
The Teacher (2022)
Mediocre
Had such potential. Started well. Had me guessing if she had abused the kid or not. But then as the plot developed it also showed some major plot holes/unexplained things. For a start why did this bloke pick that kid. And why did the kid agree to it. Was the bloke sexually abusing him too. Not really sure what went on here. Except the kid agreed to lie and ruin his favourite teachers career for no apparent reason.
At the end the bloke makes mention of her mother... is he insinuating he was involved in her suicide. Or that her dad was an abuser. Totally lost me at this point.
Also annoyed it didn't show her getting her name cleared. Or an apology of some sort. Just showed her reaching out to the kid and them having a moment. Which was weird. And that's it.
It's also unbelievable how someone on probation. Ona. Sex offenders register could manage to be around kids in so many different ways without getting remanded. She parks outside the school several times. Goes to her old school and walks around the corridors. Seems to follow the kid around many times. Also not many adults seem bothered by the fact she is a convicted offender. As someone else said. If this was a male teacher he would have been treated very differently.
All in all a great premise. Some good bits here and there. But was sadly left underwhelmed and a bit annoyed tbh.
Adult Material (2020)
Surprising
Just binge watched all 4 episodes in on viewing. Wasn't the plan but I couldn't help it. Not at all how I thought it would go. Sad. Gritty. Emotive. All handled beautifully by the lead actress. Brings up some questions surrounding consent and boundaries. As well as how secrets and trauma can effect you without even realising. Has left me feeling a bit sad tbh. Although it's refreshing to not have the Hollywood ending where she wins the law suit and becomes rich. It's kinda heartbreaking that nothing will change.highly recommended. Although trigger warning if you've ever been the survivor or rape or sexual assault.
Elephant Song (2014)
Dark, bleak, tragic and brilliant
Watched this for the first time today. The lead actor, who played the patient, was mesmerising. Solid performance and made you hate, yet care about him all at once.
The "twist" isn't the sort of twist I was expecting. So if you're going into this expecting a mind blowing revelation you'll be disappointed. This is a slow burn mystery with a tragic abs sad ending. Michaels story was so sad, and you really felt for him as he told his tale. This left the ending even more haunting.
If you like strong acting and can handle the slow pace then I highly recommend this movie.
Intrusion (2021)
Predictable
Had potential. But failed miserably. Could see the plot coming a mile off. As soon as they were told about the missing girl you knew where the movie was going.
Passed the time and is watchable. But if you're looking for something new, innovative and ground breaking. Then this isn't for you.
