The 8 Show (2024– )
5/10
Purposeless
20 May 2024
It starts of interesting, even though the premise isn't something that's original. The editing is well-done and there are a lot of funny moments early on. Inevitably, the show takes a dark turn, but the extremities of it were too much and just seemed pointless. There are a lot of things going on at the same time and the latter half of the series is rushed and messy. The characters mostly do things for the sake of the plot and everything just becomes really unbelievable. The show doesn't take a deep dive into the personalities of the characters and we know very little about them, but that's what makes a show good - the characters. Without them, we are just left with a nameless crowd who tortures each other.

Poor Things (2023)

Unique and bizarre
1 February 2024
You can never go into a Yorgos Lanthimos film and not expect something unusual, but this time he even outdid himself. The cinematography is mesmerizing, characters are skilfully written and the whole plot is incredibly executed. It's fascinating to watch how the whole tale unfolds in its twisted ways, that are as equally hilarious as they are morbid. It's a masterpiece that brings out a variety of complex feelings with its intriguing philosophy about social indoctrination. However anyone feels about it, no one can deny that it's unique and original. It's nothing like you've seen before. The only problem with it is that it fades towards the end.

Surprisingly good
14 December 2023
I don't understand the hate this movie got. Coming into it, I didn't expect it to be worthwhile because most Netflix originals are garbage, so I didn't expect this one to be any different, but I was in for a ride. Performances are great, dialogue is pretty solid and the plot is very refreshing and interesting. Even the hyperbole of the whole thing works in its favor and shows how far insecurity and greed can take you. It's a great character study that has no moral heroes. While watching, the intensity keeps increasing and you have no idea where the movie is gonna take you next. Don't mind the extremeness of it, enjoy it.

Offensively bad
3 July 2023
A stylish tale about mental struggles and exploitation of celebrities that couldn't be more terribly done. The whole story is all over the place and unsure on what it's trying to accomplish. Motives and actions of the characters are unclear because they only operate on shock value. The show tries hard to impress us with its edginess, but it's only being provocative for the sake of it; there is no deeper meaning to anything that's happening. It wasn't remotely decent to begin with, but, as episodes go on, it just keeps gradually getting worse. Ultimately, we get to the finale and the "plot twist" which is nonsensical beyond belief. There are no redeeming qualities in this series, except the main character's performance, but it can't save us from the absurdity of the plot.

Melodramatic mess
28 June 2023
If you thought it couldn't get worse than the first movie, you're in for a ride. This sequel tries to justify its existence with a lot of forced conflict, but it just comes across as uninteresting and downright pointless. The dialogue is, once again, awfully written and conversations throughout almost every scene feel extremely unnatural. A lot of the scenes are just very awkward and some are even slightly creepy. The movie tries way too hard to be erotic and that's where I'm lost on the presumed demographic for this movie. It's way too childish, even for teenagers, but it's also very sexual. However it may be, it is just, objectively, very poorly executed.

Slow-burn and pitch-black
4 January 2023
I expected this to have mixed reviews, which it does, with critics absolutely loving it and the audience being divisive. It's definitely not for everyone and even Martin McDonagh's fans might not be on board with this one. Everything is very subtle, the pace is extremely slow and it seems like nothing of substance is really happening. I can completely understand why someone won't like it, but I have to say I love the tragedy and the bizarreness of the film. The culture of the film seems very authentic and I love the way it depicted human relationships. It's definitely an interesting watch, even though it falls a bit flat.

Underrated classic
30 November 2022
Originally a box-office flop, this movie aged like fine wine and is especially relevant in this day and age of social media and celebrity worship. It's frequently overlooked in Scorsese's filmography, but, in my opinion, it's one of his best films. Robert De Niro's performance is none the richer, as he plays a character that is equally fascinating to watch as he is unsettling. The movie works brilliantly as a social satire, it's nervously hilarious and it's also extremely dark. While watching, we have an idea of where it's taking us, but the plot's subversion is what really makes it. It's perfect.

Unpredictable chaos
20 November 2022
It's a brilliant satire that mocks, among other things, pretentious wealthy people and their ever-present need for extravagance. It's charged with a stellar cast that delivers great performances and it never stops being suspenseful. The concept of the movie is intriguing and original. It doesn't completely rely on the social commentary behind it all, which, if dissected, could even be perceived as complete nonsense, but that doesn't manage to ruin the brilliance of the film. It pushes all the right buttons and it's equally sensational as it is unhinged. However you feel about it, you can't deny watching it is a memorable and unique cinematic experience.

Not as impressive as everyone is making it out to be
10 November 2022
This show certainly presents a unique narrative concept that satirically critiques the office life. The satire is appreciated, but somehow feels empty because of the overexaggeration of the script. The ever-present unusual atmosphere tries to be extremely mysterious and thought-provoking, but the show doesn't reveal reasons efficient enough for us to truly become invested. The pace is uneventful and slow and there are more flat moments in each episode than the interesting ones, although the last two episodes are genuinely suspenseful. You have to sit through a lot of monotony to get to the ultimate reveals, which are not that wildly thrilling. (Season 1)

One season would be perfect
8 November 2022
It's a compelling and well-written show that's beautifully connected, but it should have ended with the first season. It was supposed to be a mini-series and it shows. I'm not saying the second season is bad by any means, it's just very unnecessary. The Meryl Streep addition is excellent and it works in the show's favor. She steals every scene she is in and makes you forget about the lack of material. Powerful cast highlights the brilliance of the first season and makes the second season push through. It was hard to justify the second's season existence, but it did manage to tie up some loose ends and showcase the process of grief in an appreciable way.

"If we do a season two, we'll break that beautiful thing and spoil it." - Jean-Marc Vallée, director.

Surprisingly good
29 October 2022
It's a compelling and effective horror that tells the same old tale in a very refreshing way. The idea that has been portrayed a million times before in various ways manages to feel authentic and makes quite an impression. Main character's performance is excellent and really makes the movie believable. It relies more on actual psychological trauma than the curse and showcases genuine fears about mental illness. It has a fair amount of clichés that follow a generic form and are expected to deliver a predictable ending, but the tables turn and the ending turns out to be very simple, but also makes the whole experience worthwhile.

Compelling, but lacks in-depth analysis
7 October 2022
Truly touching and devastating tale about the human monstrosity. It gives us a look into the mind and life of Jeffrey Dahmer, even though they could have done a much deeper dive into the psychology of it all. Some things were poorly explained, including his potential diagnosis and the cannibalism aspect. It was interesting to hear different perspectives from various people about the story. Labelling these tapes as "unheard" was surprising because Dahmer didn't say anything particularly new or unknown to the public. I'd say it's a very well-edited and thought-provoking series that's mostly skilfully constructed, but it lacks depth in some parts.

Excessively dramatic and underwhelming
6 October 2022
Like most Ryan Murphy projects, this one is also very messy and all over the place. It tries to be many things at once and ends up being ineffective and way too melodramatic. It attempts to depict true crime and horror and blend them into one, but fails to do so. The script takes many liberties that ultimately don't pay off and the social agenda behind it all is overblown. The dialogue is exaggerated and unnatural, very much in the style of Ryan Murphy. The series starts off strong, but later episodes seem extremely rushed and weak. Character performances are very captivating, especially Richard Jenkins, who is the high point of the series, even though Evan Peters is also admirable.

Painfully poetic
5 October 2022
This film feels more like a real-life experience than a motion picture. It comes across as very authentic and original, which is almost impossible to accomplish in this day and age of cinema. Its bold way of storytelling takes viewers on a unique journey through the mind of someone who's struggling with their illness and the uncertainty of it all keeps us on the edge of our seat the entire time, unlike any thriller manages to accomplish. It's hard to decide what's more extraordinary, Anthony Hopkins' convincing performance or the director's breathtaking visual concept. I can't think of a more impressive directorial debut than this one.

A masterclass in dialogue
27 July 2022
This modern classic depicts a dark tale about power and greed. It's chilling, extremely upsetting, but still satisfying to watch because of Daniel Day-Lewis' complex and phenomenal performance. He displays a character that is equally interesting as he is emotionally crippled. It's a perfectly written character study that doesn't fail to dig deep, even if we find no humanity in its depth. The dialogue is overpowering and poetic, the cinematography and the score are sensational and the philosophical relevance of the movie is still noteworthy to this day. The only complaints I have is that it drags out in the middle and that some sequences should've been cut shorter.

Probably the worst thing I've ever seen
20 July 2022
Going into the sequel, I was already expecting this to be terrible, but it somehow exceeded all of my expectations. This is by far worse than the original and that says a lot. The scenes are aggressively clichéd and corny, the plot is much more ridiculous than it is in the first movie, the acting is laughable and so on. Nothing makes this amusing. Even the sex scenes are bizarre and way over the top.

A great series that ultimately disappoints
15 July 2022
It's an action-packed, a well-writen (for the most part) and an exciting drama that always keeps you on the edge of your seat. As the show goes on, the thrill and the tension slowly fade away. The plot starts to be much more unrealistic and unconvincing than it formerly was. With an ending like that, we are left to wonder why did they even bother bulding up a lot of the things if they weren't gonna lead anywhere. The ending (and much of the last season), opposed to previous parts of the show, ends up being very messy and anticlimactic.

Persuasion (I) (2022)

It's more lacking than it is progressive
15 July 2022
It's a fun and, at times, a charming modern-day adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion that takes many liberties and tries to be contemporary with today's audience. Even though some might complain about the butchering of Austen's material, I find this to be quite refreshing, but the problem lies elsewhere. The plot comes across as unconvincing, rushed and extremely sloppy. It starts of on a good note, but slowly starts to completely fall apart and not even the main character's ever-present charm can save it from utter failure.

Effective melodrama
28 June 2022
It is a very provocative film that depicts a fragile woman defined by her sex appeal. It's subtle, but extremely moving. Malena is a character who barely speaks during the entire movie, but it's easy to resonate with her and understand her suffering. The movie is high in melodrama and that can take away from the story, but it's intentionally hyperbolic and those quirks work in its favor. It's a unique and an interesting story that is often wrongly understood and, in my opinion, criminally underrated.

Massively overrated
29 March 2022
There's nothing special about this movie. It's slightly enjoyable and it's a fun little story, but that's all it is. It lacks any kind of depth and it's not very cohesive. The motivations of the characters aren't very well presented or fully explained. The movie is charming at times, but that inital charm later progresses into self-indulgence. It's too quirky for me, but also should be too insufficient for any viewer.

Oversimplified trauma
13 March 2022
It tells an emotionally devastating story in a very simplistic way and comes across very unnatural and shallow. The script deals with a heavy subject matter, but fails to dig deep. There are a lot of things going on that eventually lead nowhere and the whole tone of the movie is very weak. Highlight of the movie is, without a doubt, main character's performance that is very captivating and believable.

Metacinematic triumph
9 February 2022
Metacinema is a familiar territory for all of the Scream movies, but this one really takes in to a whole new level. It's a self-parody of sorts, but, surprisingly, it works. It's wildy entertaining, unpredictable (at times), very detail-oriented and hilarious. I would say this is the best attempt to come close to the quality of the original, but, of course, nothing beats the original.

A painful tale of injustice
7 February 2022
This movie tells a real-life emotionally devastating story about the politics and unlawful acts of the justice system. Considering the subject matter at hand, this could've been a lot more gripping, but it gets a bit dull and drags out in the middle. Besides that, it's exceptionally well-acted, especially the Daniel Day-Lewis performace, which really steals the show and marks the high point of the movie.

7 February 2022
This is by far the best episode yet and Zendaya puts out her best performance. It's dark, grim and depressing, but also very captivating and exciting. This season wasn't all that, but this episode exceeded all expectations.

Kubrick at his lowest
6 February 2022
Even though there are a lot of bizarre things going on, I've never seen a film so empty of ideas as this one. It aims to be some kind of surreal masterpiece, but ends up being more of an absurd nightmare. I don't usually mind the slow-moving pace, but this just rambles on for way too long in these morbid and pointless sequences. It tries hard to be complex, but can't even manage to be entertaining. It says a lot if the orgies can't even make it interesting.
