Do Not Disturb (1999)
what were they thinking ???
Well, first 10 minutes of the movie are convincing. However, starting with the murder, the whole movie starts sinking down the drain of stupid development, silly dialogs, unbelievable characters and of course - bad acting. Were all smoking pot when they were doing this movie or what ?
Ten year old girl kicking bad guy left and right, jumping moving elevators and tall building, being accused of smoking pot (yes, by the police), silly parents, a bad guy so nervous and shaking, only to become a Terminator and deliver some super stunt drive in the end of the movie.
Let me just say it ruined my evening tonight. If this is what European directors are able to come up with, then it is a shame. To be avoided at all cost.
Gruntovcani (1975)
A masterpiece
Describing the life of a "simple" man Dudek in a small village, Gruntovcani manages to deliver the best production ever in Croatia or, IMHO, former Yugoslavia. Character portrayal is excellent, the plot is always interesting and (although one can always guess how's it is going to end for Dudek) full of unexpected development.
Several actors came up with their best roles in career, namely Martin Sagner as Dudek, but also unforgettable Zvonimir Ferencic as Cinober and Mladen Serment as Presvetli.
A highly recommended piece, although sometimes hard to understand except for those accustomed to the "kaj" dialect. At most times it is a comedy, but many a times it is very deep in describing human behavior, from good to bad. When one takes into account the time it was made, Gruntovcani is sometimes a brave piece as well, often discretely criticizing the communist regime of the time.
