A Million Miles Away (2023)
BEST Film I Have Seen in 2023, Bar None!
Why can Hollywood not make great films like this one? There are so many people among us that are just like the main character in this film. They are bright, ambitious, and just need a few breaks from people around them to accomplish GREAT things in life.
I love the portrayal here of humble people who never forget their roots and who fully understand the most important aspects of human life. This true story wonderfully depicts how these family members never take for granted the treasures around them...
Ambition can be a negative human trait of course, but not when you keep in perspective those around you that helped you at every step.
Gran Turismo (2023)
Best Film in 4 Years
Finally, a movie that has all the right elements of a great film without having to invent wild, implausibe scenes. This is the first film I have seen where CGI was used in ways that truly enhanced the story without being distracting. The right combinations of emotion, adrenaline, anticipation, determination, disappointment.... A true story that does not rely on over-the-top plot lines, action scenes, or acting. So good!
My wife started out by telling the friends with us, "Oh, a this is a boys movie" as she saw the initial racing scenes. By the mid-point of the movie, she was hooked and was clapping with the rest of the theater.
Just Mercy (2019)
Outstanding True Story
Hope is such an important basic need of every human being. The courage of the attorney in those early years in Alabama was incredible as he fought against blatant injustice. The performance of Jamie Foxxe was was suberb in every way.... So great! Every American should see this film. So important.
Echo in the Canyon (2018)
Fascinating.... Entertaining
Having grown up in this era, with all of those albums, made the film come alive for me/us. My wife kept leaning over asking "Who is that guy?!" referring to Jakob Dylan. She was distracted a bit by his stone face and said, "He seems very depressed." Maybe because his dad wouldn't give an interview? Aside from his prominence in the film, the short documentary was an absolute pleasure to watch and get a glimpse into that world.
For those of us married to artists, it's always fascinating to me to understand a bit more of how they think and to see what makes them tick. The interviews of the great Eric Clapton and Tom Petty made the film for me. Both of them seem to have a genuine natural kindness and wisdom that seems a part of their DNA.
I'm taking my songwriter/singer son in law tonight to see it. He knows more about the subjects of the documentary than I and he wasn't even alive then.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
The Music was Great!
The rating I gave reflects how the film seemed to glorify the hedonistic lifestyle. Yes, this was typical of rock bands living in the selfish. The film could have spent a lot more time on music and cut out the obvious lifestyle scenes that seemed to preach normalcy.
