There's Something Wrong with the Children (2023)
Zach Gilford does his best Mark Wahlberg from The Happening impersonation
Meh....
The movie isn't bad but it's not good either. There is something lacking from it. The little girl does a fantastic job and comes across creepy. The other actors weren't bad but everything felt off. Zach Gilford was very much giving Mark Wahlberg from The Happening, it's kind of hilarious. There was one scene I was disappointed he didn't say "What? No!" The plot itself was very similar to Here Comes the Devil that it felt like a weird remake, I was surprised to find out it was not. Another thing that threw me off was the music, it had odd placements and didn't fit the scenes. Give it a watch if you want to watch a film about creepy kids.
Skinamarink (2022)
Not for everyone
I can definitely understand why so many didn't like this, it really isn't for everyone. There are many Long drawn out shots of corners and shadows. You don't ever really see anyone's face or see them straight on for a fact. Most of the audio is whispered words and static. That being said this is all deliberately done, obviously. Very much an experimental horror film, a unique one at that, that's played out like a nightmarish fever. If you're like me and have a deep fear of the dark, you may be pleasantly surprised. I kept making out faces and outlines in the shadows that I'm not entirely sure were really there. It stuck with me the rest of the night. I feel like the ending was ambiguous and honestly there was no better way. Like I said definitely NOT for everyone but give it a shot you might be pleasantly surprised.
Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)
I love Pete Davidson!
This was great even though I had it figured out about halfway through the movie. I really enjoyed this. The only setback is the characters are a very annoying but that just means you enjoy it more when horrible things happen to them. I'm not even sure we're supposed to like any of them. It just really shows how self absorbed and toxic people are and how quick your "friends" will stab you in the back... and that they are way too quick to jump to conclusions. Overall I found it smart and funny and very entertaining. Pete Davidson and Lee Pace steal the movie, especially Pete he's hilarious! Definitely worth a watch!
Tvar (2019)
Why such a low rating?
Other than some bad CGI this was actually a really good movie. The acting was great and so was the story. You cared about the two main characters. This is a unique take on the "evil child" sub-genre of horror. The only off-putting thing about the movie is there are some things not clarified and that CGI is terrible. I'm talking laugh out loud bad, but the acting and the story more than make up for it.
Lucky (2020)
Being a woman sucks sometimes
If you don't get the movie then it's not for you. It is a little complex and don't take it as it is. This film is NOT a straightforward slasher, as a lot people seemed to believed it to be. It makes you think and is ultimately depressing. Although I did enjoy the film, it isn't without it's flaws. At some points it falls a little flat and feels messy. This is only the 2nd movie to stress me out while watching it (the first was Mother!) I think you should at least give it a watch for Brea Grant's great performance... And to try to understand the message for it's one everyone could hear.
Stay Out of the F**king Attic (2020)
Why such a low score?
I don't understand why the score is so low. This was a fun movie and I actually wanted the characters to survive. The two female leads were great. Funny, sad and a little unsettling. I could definitely watch it again. Also make sure you watch through the credits.
Airplane Mode (2019)
Why did I set though this?
I guess I just wanted to see if the movie was as bad as I imagined.... it was. There was sooo much yelling. Yelling and screaming does not equal funny. It felt as if the movie was made by sex crazed pre-teens. Just don't watch!
50 States of Fright: Scared Stiff (Oregon) - Part 2 (2020)
This one is actually really good!
I have only watched the first 3 states but this is by far my favorite! The acting was great and I loved that they used practical effects instead of CGI! Awesome little short.
50 States of Fright: Ball of Twine (Kansas) - Part 3 (2020)
Better than The Golden Arm
This was way better than The Golden Arm. The story is unique and although cheesey it is a little creepy. But let me tell you, me being from Kansas, not all Kansans are like the blindly racist people in this story.
50 States of Fright: The Golden Arm (Michigan) - Part 3 (2020)
Wow...this was bad! Major spoilers!
I'm leaving my review for all 3 parts of The Golden Arm here. This was just bad. I'm confused was I supposed to take this serious? It wasn't scary at all and very laughable. The 1st part was decent but parts 2 and 3! So many things were questionable about this. 1st why would he ever have his inexperienced wife help him cut down a tree. 2nd am I supposed to believe that she was so obsessed with beauty that she refused to remove her golden arm even though it was poisoning her. 3rd why didn't they just have little miss crazy wear a sleeve under her golden arm, wouldn't that help stop the skin absorbing the gold? 4th why did the husband not seem that bothered by digging up and desecrating his wife's corpse, that was a little disturbing. This felt like a comedy.
Fantasy Island (2020)
Not as bad as I thought it would be
This movie was honestly a lot better than I expected. With that being said, it is by no means a good movie. The acting wasn't bad, and the story was decent (although REALLY CHEESEY at times) and the movie looked great. However they tried to do too much in this one film. It was very entertaining though and I could watch it again.
Captured (2017)
Disappointment...
I waited sooo long for this movie to come out only to be let down. The story was blah, the acting wasn't great (Except Brittany Curran, she was awesome! Don't get me started on the guy playing Max... ugh) and it was so obvious who the villain was, I feel like they didn't even try to hide it. By the halfway mark of the movie I had predicted most of the ending, including what I guess was supposed to be the big "twist". Overall although terribly predictable and some painfully hard to watch acting, the movie was still entertaining.
Emo: The Musical (2016)
Surprisingly good
I honestly didn't expect to like this as much as I did. It's wacky and hilarious but also has a lot of heart. Plus the music is really catchy!
3:15 am (2018)
It was decent...
This was actually a fairly decent found footage film. It takes the same formula of the V/H/S series as in having a central wraparound short broken up between the other segments. It does have some shoddy acting and laughable CGI at times but is still a fun watch.
Footage 1 is the wraparound segment. Unlike the V/H/S movies this doesn't tie all the other segments together. The only thing I can think of is that the woman in this short finds a bag with some SD cards and a camera, perhaps it's the other films. It does have some creepy imagery but the woman is stupid. If you are in the woods being chased by witches don't go screaming at organs hanging in the trees. Then at times she didn't seem scared enough it's as if the actress couldn't make up her mind how she wanted to portray the character. I just know if I were being chased by a naked person in the woods wearing an animal mask... I'd be terrified. Overall this segment was just meh.
Footage 2 was awkward but had a decent build up to a disappointing reveal. The dialogue was very awkward at times. Like when the mother was just casually telling her daughter a deceased relative was back for revenge and the nonchalant reaction from the daughter. The buildup was pretty suspenseful to me, although this could have been due to me watching the movie alone at 2am. The reveal however was bad. Just terrible CGI. With better acting and better CGI this would've been a great short.
Footage 3 was the worst of the anthology. The acting was horrendous, they had a music score over a FOUND FOOTAGE FILM and CGI BLOOD! Ugh I hate CGI blood. And what was with this "movie" they were making? Camp Chief Jason? It was terrible. They go to a crime scene site in the middle of the woods to film their atrocious "movie" and surpise they find a dead body. Apparently Logan Paul is their hero because they film the dead body, choose to use the footage in their movie and one steals a ring from it. Now the kid who took the ring has gone all Lord of the Rings with his "precious" and is acting weird. Then a demon looking thing shows up and starts killing them. It was dumb and should've been cut from the film.
Footage 4 is where the segments start getting better and I won't say too much about these. This one is about a trio of college students who want to interview prostitutes for their thesis and things go awry. I honestly liked this one a lot. To me it had more of the better acting especially from the college trio. It is still a little iffy but pretty good.
Footage 5 was really different, in a good way. Its about a man who is trying to bring back his wife's soul, who is in a coma. I saw someone say they didn't like this one but I think it might've been my favorite. I would actually like to see this one with a bigger budget and as a feature length.
Footage 6 was pretty good despite some iffy acting and a terrible CGI bear. It's about a couple who go to Oregon in search of Bigfoot for their YouTube channel and find more than they wanted. I think I liked this one so much because I was expecting an obvious man in a bigfoot suit but got a grizzly bear instead. The bear is at times terrible CGI but I'll overlook that just because NO BIGFOOT! I was genuinely shocked by that. Honestly this one was perhaps the scariest because it can actually happen... well sort of. I saw another reviewer say there are no Grizzlies in Oregon and there are not... Elswehere though this could happen so be safe when hiking/camping.
This movie is worth a watch for found footage fans but you can probably skip footage 3, not worth your time.
Gisaengchung (2019)
Sooo good!
This movie is amazing! One of the best films I have ever seen. Parasite definitely deserved to win Best Picture despite no matter how much a certain somebody disagrees. Don't let subtitles keep you from experiencing this wonderful piece of movie art!
Black Christmas (2019)
It's not that bad!
I don't understand why there is so much hate on this movie. My MAIN problem is it shouldn't, much like the new Child's Play, call itself a remake. It has it's own unique story and is nothing like the far superior original. Also I feel like the movie played it too safe with the PG-13 rating. Do they give away too much in the trailer? Yes, but there's more to it. Does it villianize men? No, not at all! Is the ending a little cheesey and bonkers? Absolutely! If you do choose to watch the movie don't go in expecting a remake and maybe you'll like it. Also if you are offended by the term "toxic masculinity" or like a lot of gore this movie isn't for you! You won't like it at all.
Only Go There at Night: Darkness Rising (2009)
What was supposed to come next!?!?!?!?
Despite having a low budget and iffy acting this movie was actually very entertaining. They were obviously setting up for a 3rd film but there is no 3rd film! I just want to know what was supposed to come next? I know it's now 2019 and I'll never know. But I want to know so bad did Wes come out of his coma? Does Christian get what's coming to him? This is like Munger Road all over again, I'll never get the full story. Ugh!!!!!!
The Fanatic (2019)
Nope
Interesting story but VERY POORLY executed. Travolta's portrayal of someone with autism was borderline offensive. You could tell he did try and his best performance in the movie was towards the very end. Devon Sawa did a decent job but what was wrong with his character? He kind of goes overboard. The biggest problem is the writing. It doesn't matter how good of an actor you are if the writing is terrible. Also Fred Durst finds a way to plug in Limp Bizkit music. Overall the movie is not good but was interesting and had potential.... I guess.
Last Christmas (2019)
Predictable but charming
Although the movie was very predictable and a little cheesey at times, it was heart-warming and charming. Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding are well charming. It's worth a watch if you don't expect anything new or a huge surprise.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Loved it!
I absolutely loved this movie! It was entertaining all through out the film and the performances were great. Jacob Tremblay has a small role and he completely stole the scene, that kid is an amazing actor. Ewan McGregor made a great adult Danny. Amazing follow up to one of the all time best horror films.
Noelle (2019)
Such a cute movie!
I actually really enjoyed this movie. Anna Kendrick is charming as always and Bill Hader is just awesome! The movie reminded me a little of Elf (which is my favorite Christmas movie). I'm sure I'll be watching Noelle every Christmas now.
Hide the Monster (2016)
Great found footage, disappointing ending.
The movie is really good! The mom's acting was a little iffy at points but the two leads were great and the child was decent. There are some genuine scares and the movie doesn't overly rely on jump scares, like a lot of found footage horror does. I really liked it and would have given it a higher rating if it weren't for that ending. It was a little cheesey and felt rushed. The ending just didn't feel like it was on the same calibre of the rest of the film. Still worth a watch.
Black Holler (2017)
A really fun campy movie!
This movie was so much fun to watch. The lead actress was great! It really did crack me up. Also the stoner guy looked like Seth Rogen circa 'Knocked Up' at times.
Haunt (2019)
Super creepy
This movie was really good! The acting was good and the plot was good! The clown, don't get me started. It's best to go into this movie without reading spoilers, not that there's a big plot twist or anything, it would take from the fun.
Camp Wedding (2019)
It was fun....
The movie was fun and the acting was decent but the characters were annoying. The ending wasn't satisfying and it felt rushed. The beginning of the movie showed so much promise but overall I was let down. There are some really funny parts but that's just about it.
