Average plot, Average movie with well above average Actors.

Average plot, Average movie with well above average Actors.

This is probably what makes the movie watchable. The movie seems like an incredible waste of the highly talented actors they were able to get to make it. It makes me wonder if these actors made this to fulfill a contract obligation with the studio. Nothing else makes sense. Hugh Jackman, Maria Bello, Jake Gyllenhaal, Terence Howard, Paul Dano, Mellisa Leo, and Viola Davis.

If this group of actors had a good script, well, it boggles the mind what they would be able to do with it. They took this ordinary fare and turned it into a moderately entertaining movie. Huzzah!!

Great Cast, Weak A&& story.
2 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Great Cast, Weak A&& story. A lot of gimmicky red meat, heart string pulling, morality play. I would expect a whole lot more from almost any other director except Kevin Smith. He manages to take a great cast with a really good potential story, and turn it into a typical Kevin Smith schmaltzy pile of nonsensical, who is the worst amongst us thought experiment. I bet he thought he was being profound. The story degenerates into a shoot em up dark comedy of religious nonsense, government conspiracy, comic book logic stupidity. I hope Kevin Smith stops making movies if this is the best effort he can come up with. He should be charged with Crimes against Art for forcing these great actors to push through the mostly nonsensical things he did to this script.

Flame away.

Really bad idea.
17 January 2011
Really bad idea. Maybe it will get better but all these actors are really bad fits for this show. William H Macy, is stilted and awkward in the roll of Frank, He's too good for this role, the Sex scenes are just not sexy, and the brutal genius of the original series just doesn't translate. At all.

The Awful, Awful, (and occasionally charming) people of the original series is just going to be to hard to recreate. It might be different if I hadn't seen the original series (the one I continue to watch) but the complete degradation, attitude and flat out despicable-ness of the original characters can in no way be mimicked in a new version. You had to grow with these characters in order to mine the depths of the ugliness they create for themselves, and I can't see myself going through this again in an American version that I already know the plot to. For me it doesn't work at all. For those who haven't seen the British version, maybe it will work.

I almost didn't watch it when I saw the first sketch but......
11 October 2009
I almost didn't watch it when I saw the first sketch, I thought it was just going to be a one gimmick show but......These kids are amazing!!!!!! I hope the material stays strong enough to highlight their brilliant talents.

The second show fell off a bit but I hope it recoups some of the absolute brilliance of the 1st show in the series. I really like the lesbian jokes. I like that the kids are NOT asked to be sexual in these bits, but just edgy and witty.

And wow, they can really run rings around any actor (kid or adult) with some of the dialogue requirements ,such as, the character "Steve" in the "Pitch-Bitch" skit.

Lots of range on these kids. Let hope they get good material to show it off.

really bad movie, and what's up with that jerk's voice?
27 June 2009
I give them credit for trying. It's a really bad movie though. It try's too hard. There are moments of talent showing through in the cinematography but other than that, forget it. I feel really bad for any of the actors who might actually have talent who appeared in this movie, because it doesn't show here. AND, what the hell is up with the lead actors voice? He must be reading all his lines phonetically, which would actually show some talent, but it is just a horrible performance. Did he intend to sound this way? Did he make an effort to sound this way all through the movie? The most interesting thing about this movie, is trying to figure out what the hell this guy is doing with his voice and if he can actually speak English.

Magic, simple genius with amazing perspectives
15 July 2007
Amazing camera work, wonderful acting, surreal characters in a very interesting story. Who would throw these characters together in the same story? An amazing stretch of imagination and story telling. Yet somehow it all fits in a blissfully overwhelming joy of not really knowing how it all happened but grateful that it did.

I could actually see this really happening except for the time shifting and the fact that all the women are stunning. The story rings true.

I felt at the end of the movie that the film maker had given me a glimpse of what it must be like to be an extremely talented artist in the midst of varying degrees of angst, joy, despair and creativity. Thank you for this movie.

this is horrible
2 February 2007
When the zombies harvest my brain for nourishment, there will be little nutritional value left because I am certain that most of my brain has melted in self defense from watching this awful show. It couldn't have been much worse or more hacky than it already was. It was inexcusably insufferable.

Hacky, Hacky pile of crap, "put a stick up her butt then put the dookey in her eye".

How many drugs do you have to be on to write this and just laugh hysterically, like you know they were doing the first time they said this or heard it or, god help us all!!!!!!!!!!

the zombies haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa my brains!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pathetic fear-mongering
20 February 2006
It was obvious pretty early on that this was going to be an anti-racist polemic with an alternate America view and a typical "Surprise" outcome. Supposed to turn your world view upside down!!!! Heavy man!!! This movie might be good for a younger crowd with little or no real world experience but for anyone with a world view larger than their backyard, it was simply an exercise in the mental masturbation of fear-mongering at a pretty low level.

On the bright side Mageina Tovah is very HOT, fun to look at and a pretty good actress too. Also, where else are you going to see Patrick Swayze's younger, hipper brother, Don?

this Treadwell guy thought he was doing "work"
26 October 2005
I find it amazing the lengths people go to in order to fool themselves into thinking they are doing something important. I guess it helped him (Treadwell) lead a terribly interesting life.

What he was doing though, was not work. It was self indulgently moronic. He endangered the bears and other WILDLIFE (who seemed to be doing fine without his help) by acclimating them to see people as approachable. He was doing nothing that could really be considered research, didn't seem to be following basic principles of science that would have proved he had a reason to be there, he just adopted an idea that bears and other wildlife could be infantalized (not a word, I know but ?) and treated like misunderstood children. He was nothing more than an adventurous neophyte in his chosen field of "work".

The people he surrounded himself with didn't seem too bright either (see ex-gf story in the movie about serving soup in a restaurant). Just the type of people you need around you to support dangerous indulgences.

This movie is an interesting story about a self serving idiot. On that basis it is almost worth watching.

The difference between sex and violence in movies.
15 August 2005
The difference between sex and violence in movies. You can fake real violence. You can't fake real sex. These actors were asked to perform real sex on film for money. I don't care how you frame it, this is a real aspect of this movie. This may be a moral judgment but how can you retain any real dignity if you are having sex for money with a stranger? To be fair, I've always seen most actors as whores anyway. They trade their privacy, emotions, bodies (not necessarily sexually), physical and mental well being, basically trading their whole selves for the prurient enjoyment of those who choose to watch their work all for what? A chance at fame, fortune, applause, money, to fill an emotional hole?...(feel free to add to the list)....seems like a pretty empty trade off at the end of the day.

Of course this is just an opinion but boil it all down and what does anyone really have if they don't have themselves.

I'm just tilting at windmills here, I know, but I just can't get it out of my head how degrading it could be to "act" in a movie like this for "arts" sake.

possibly one of the best movies ever made.
12 August 2005
It's hard to distinguish one great movie over all others, but my feeling for this movie is that it is just spot on in every aspect it portrays of the human condition, in no small part to amazing and stunning acting of all of the participants. It's not hard to believe that this movie has escaped notice of mainstream movie goers because it is just not typical fare. If everyone took the care at their craft that these actors, director, cinematographer, etc. took in making this film, this world would be just that much better. As I was swept away with awe and wonder at this movie as it progressed, I kept looking for a flaw or a misstep by the actors or the story line thinking that no one could keep up this consistent excellence. I was wrong.

Amy Brenneman provided an excellent narration. I was worried her presence would detract somehow, not because she's not a good actor but because she has such a high TV profile I thought she wouldn't fit. Maybe she wouldn't have fit if she was required to provide more face time in this movie, but she wasn't. Well rounded wonderful movie. I hope my review doesn't give you any expectations for this movie. I went in not knowing anything about this movie and left it with these impressions. Maybe these feelings will subside after I see another well crafted movie but today I feel this is possibly one of the best movies ever made.

A horribly disturbing piece of work with great actors
21 July 2005
A horribly disturbing piece of work with great actors looking great doing great work. I felt manipulated, but the actors all hit their marks with precision. Just when the character would be fully developed in other movies, an underlying attribute or personality trait or quirk of fate would just shake this movies world up a bit. A nice change of pace from the regular cookie cutter movie, but then again maybe not. Maybe this movie was just cut from a bigger broader cookie cutter. Certainly within the confines of THIS movie the same cookie cutter was used to display the quirks and variables of life that are often not seen or attempted to be shown in other movies.

A terrifically wonderful, enlightening,
31 May 2005
sad, and horribly tragic movie. Probably the best movie I've seen all year, and very probably one of the best movies I've ever seen. I am reminded somehow of the tragic heroes of Midnight Cowboy. It was the harmonica music at the end that helped trigger the memory, but the heroes in this movie are equally as tragic even though the circumstances are completely different. There are true heroes, clearly defined enemies and a horrific, terrific blurring of both definitions that left me in a state of bliss, melancholy, joy and sadness. The questions I am sure this movie intended to evoke will probably never be answered to my satisfaction or to the satisfaction of humanity, but lets hope people keep trying. A terrific use of film!!

this movie spoils itself about 2/3rds in
23 February 2005
I mean, come on! This movie had such nice potential but it's like they ran out of money to finish the script and just telegraphed the whole damn rest of the movie about 2/3rds of the way through. Characters start spouting this movies whole reason for existence to other characters who didn't ask for the information on extremely flimsy premises. They also fall into some stereotypical behavior because that must be what's expected in this genre of movie. It's really pretty sad because this movie could have been so much more.

I was really hoping this would be a good movie. There was some good acting. Mark Hamill does an excellent job until the movie falls apart, so does Sally Struthers. It was fun to see them working and succeeding at their craft. Majandra Delfino was pretty good for awhile until her lines just became untenable. I felt sad for her that she had to say these lines that just shot the whole movies credibility for any thinking movie goers. Brad Hunt does an excellent job. He really has a surprising range of talent judging from another of his movies I recently saw, Lucky 13. (which was a piece of crap). This guy could be a star if he could pick the right scripts and get lucky with the right director.

Almost forgot! The music was so heavy handed you might think this project was handed to some minor film school to be scored. I call this kind of music "Teller Music" because you can just tell what's coming next based on the music. Less is more sometimes.

Cut half of the music from this movie, get a good film editor, a small rewrite or two and this would be a very good movie.

It pretends to be original, but it is very ordinary.
23 February 2005
Not a very good movie, a waste of time. Don't see this if you can avoid it. The ending is a piece of pretentious crap too. Forced acting, forced plot, movie telegraphed every plot twist as if there were some kind of cookie cutter these plots have to be cut out of. I just don't understand why movies like these are ever made. Can't anyone see that these movies are a bad idea just from reading the script? It's not as though these people don't have any other options as far as scripts go. Most are established actors with some credibility and some choice as to which parts to accept. I guess they had to do someone a favor or were under contract or something and just did this to get out from under the obligation.

What a huge piece of crap
13 December 2004
In fact my diarrhea is more well formed than this thing. It's hard to believe any of these people can be considered actors. Maybe it's the directors fault, but these people look like they just got their lines minutes before rehearsal and told to get into character by pretending they can't act. Although in most cases it wasn't an act that they can't act. I almost refused to watch this when I saw that Melissa Rivers was a part of the cast, that alone should be the death knell for any movie, but being a sometimes fan of Vanessa Angel and hoping she is going to have a breakout role where she can prove her acting chops, I thought I would watch. What a mistake!!!! In Vanessa's first scene with Melissa it looks like she has to swallow all of her pride just to sit there with that hack Rivers and spit out such crazy stupid dialog. Oh, Why can't Ms. Angel work with the Farrelly Bros. again??!! At least she would have a chance to work with real actors and directors again.

I thought that Kevin Dillon would be able to give a decent performance considering his recent work on "Entourage". Nope.

I didn't even recognize Lance Henriksen. He should have played one of the vampires. He already looks like the walking dead.

Avoid at all costs. Unless your into this kind of thing. Then maybe this horrible review will lower your expectations so much that you might actually enjoy what little might be enjoyable.
