Enjoyable but missed the X factor of Original
24 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I couldn't help but keep comparing this movie to the original obviously due to the similar set and actors. There were several plot techniques missing from this movie which makes it inferior: the Sigourney Weaver like possessed character, the ghost outbreak from the Original was particularly exciting and happened earlier in the movie, the Original plot was not as complicated - it was singular and easy to follow. There are far too many characters in Frozen Empire. There are several slow points in Frozen Empire - the script needed to be tighter.

I could go on but the original movie is a perfect script for pacing, dialogue, plot devices, it is the gold standard for Sci-Fi comedy.

The special effects in Frozen Empire are superb. Slimer is excellent, and the ghost-catching battles are very colourful and exciting to watch.

I enjoyed seeing all the original actors, the fire station, the library. (The Ghost Institute was weird.) A great nostalgia trip.

The Menu (2022)

Brilliant, thrilling
19 May 2023
The Menu is nothing short of brilliant. I yearn for movies that thrill and keep the viewer wondering what will happen next, with unpredictable twists and turns.

The acting is superb. The script is fast-paced, and precise. The cast all carry their parts well, but of course Ralph Fiennes is stellar. I enjoyed that every character had a story, that were reasons to like them, and reasons to root for their demise.

Some of the dialogue has a distinctly Tarantino feel about it, which for me made it even more enjoyable as it felt very intense.

A pretentious dining experience on an isolated island reveals secrets both for the guests and host. I was stunned several times.

And that's all I ever want in a thriller.

As funny as ever
20 August 2018
I have been watching the new series and it is hilarious. All Aussie Adventures captures the essence of classic Australian comedy that does not other wise exist in 2018 - it has been consumed by tired identity politics such as any number of ABC presenters or The Project.

Adventures is all about sight gags and social awkwardness - mixed with the misunderstood Aussie outback culture, which in this humble reviewers is an unbeatable combination.

It's a great show to relax, crack a beer and laugh your arse off to.

Twin Peaks (2017)
5/10
Directionless, mediocre script
14 June 2017
I (and my brother) are massive Twin Peaks fans. I just finished discussing with him that series 3 is a big let down to which he agreed. The script is poorly written, like an undergraduate drama project, and the plot meanders around hopelessly.

Those sort of antics may work in an art-house production but this is TV and needs to move along with some sort of compulsion for the viewer to come back. Twin Peaks Season 3 is not engrossing TV. The characters are not easy to relate to and the plot cannot be followed in any meaningful way.

The magic of season 1 (and to a lesser extent season 2) is definitely not here. I think Lynch and Frost would have benefited from network executives input.

Designated Survivor (2016–2019)
5/10
Confected thriller, transparent twists
17 March 2017
Designated survivor is the thriller equivalent of Revenge. Plenty of short term twists and dilemmas created for suspense. Music which draws to a climax with every add break. The characters are so boring and stereotypical.

Is not even in the same stadium as 24. Sorry.
