After.Life (2009)
Good Actors, Bad Movie
Ok so this movie is terrible. I gave it 4 stars because I love Liam Neeson and Justin Long. Christina Ricci is not my favorite but I respect her talent. Fine performances were given by all three but the premise of the movie is ridiculous and the acting beyond the ensemble players was Lifetime movie-ish. The nudity was not good nudity and I was just hoping she put her clothes back on. Liam Neeson must have lost a bet or something. I always wondered what happened to Justin Long and the answer is this movie. It really could have been much more enjoyable with better writing and a more realistic story. It's a stinker.
End of the World (2018)
Good Clean Fun
I tend to review these movies based on what they had to work with, not unreasonable expectations. For a movie with no familiar actors, an obviously low budget for special effects, and a senseless plot, it was really entertaining and kept me interested.
Part of the entertainment value is how the movie takes itself so seriously when it is so ridiculous. It's basically a ripoff of many other disaster films. Don't cancel any plans but if you have nothing to do with a few hours to kill, End of the World wouldn't be the worst way to spend some time. I like watching these type of movies with the kids because they are clean.
Death Toll (2008)
Not the Worst
So to judge this movie against other movies on the whole is the mistake most would make. This is clearly a lower-tier production that would be akin to the minor league or farm system of baseball. When looked at in that context, there is a lot of positives about this movie, hence the 7 rating. I found it entertaining. In the real world I would probably give it a 2/10. DMX showed up for a day to do some spoken word DMX gangster/God/barking dog poetry. Lou Diamond I felt bad for. His scenes you can almost see by the look on his face he can't believe what it's come to. This is barely a real movie, but watchable.
Armed Response (2017)
I really wanted to write a positive review
Let's be honest. You got a low budget thriller with a couple has-beens and a few wanna-bes. The plot was surprisingly original and about the best thing going. Wesley is not really the lead in this film and I imagine they just used him on the cover for his star power. Anne Heche? I've read a few critical reviews about Wesley and Anne's circumstances for finding themselves in this movie but their performances are both satisfactory; nothing special, nothing extraordinary. The big reveal scene near the end will have you questioning whether you just watched the worst movie ever made, but up until then it's intriguing enough to keep you watching. That ending though. It was terrible. Almost Shyamalan-esque.
Linewatch (2008)
Not Believable
This movie barely made any sense. Plot was unbelievable. Characters very shallow. Cuba was surprisingly good given what he was working with. Not a complete waste of time but a couple of very simple things and it could have been 7/10.
Last Man Down (2021)
Not as Bad as I've Read
Cons: It's Scandanavian or something. No actors I've ever heard of. Low budget effects; especially people being shot just falling down, etc.
Pros: It's entertaining. Reminds me a lot of old action movies. The formula still works.
Summary: Better than low budget Steven Seagal and/or Van Damme options.
Child Support (2019)
If you literally have nothing else to do...
Obviously this production was limited by budget constraints however it is well done in many ways. It was filmed in Detroit, so to see many familiar sites (one scene was filmed at a shopping center at the corner of my subdivision) and creative use of the beautiful Riverfront as a backdrop, gave it the best bang for limited bucks.
