Justified: City Primeval (2023)
So souless and flat it may have been written by AI
Was really hoping for something with the snap and wide range of well written characters that the old show had. But ,as has been the case a lot these days, this is a lazy production team trying to cash in on the superior work of others. The character s are all pretty wooden and shallow. As are the interactions. There is no effort any of it realistic. The plot is all over the place. I cant see this going anywhere really. Proably not worth watching if you are a fan of Justified as it will only leave a bad after taste and maybe taint your fondness for the original show.
There are still good shows out there and teams that actually put in the work but this is not that.
Bruised (2020)
probably the worst fight scenes in any movie ever
I actaully like Halle usually - but there is a certain amount of arrogance in making an MMA movie and not really bothering about the MMA part. Story line was all over the place - I am sure they missed out on at least one cliche but they got allll the rest in. I guess there is a certain market for the film - I have seen positive reviews. If you like the idea of Hallmark Movies doing an attempt at a "gritty" MMA redepmtion tale then this is for you.
Atlanta: Teddy Perkins (2018)
probably the best 40 mins of TV made in the last decade
It eases you in - a bit like the frog in the pot - it keeps getting hotter and you dont really know you are along for the ride - the writing - the acting - the low key camera work - mind was blown - had seen glimpses of this in some of the rest of season 2 but was not expecting this ride - though it might just be me then IMDBed it and its a 9.7! Again best 40 mins of tv I have seen - even if you dont watch the show this is a stand alone.
Target Number One (2020)
Having been there this is 95% right - never seen any film more spot on
Worth a watch - got the Bombad stuff 100% right - almost wish i hadnt watched it - the clothes the conditions - the chains we wore and that constant tinkle in the back ground of chains As for the story - met so many guys in Bombad and Klong prem that got set up that way - I actually worked with a guy in the E thing that we found out later was also feeding the DEA set up busts - Bradley was his name - someone gave him a hotshot in a patpong cafe - guessing he got susseed out - but yes this kind of BS was still going on Mid 90s and am guessing it still is
Vikings (2013)
finally a show based in a violent time where character is the basis of the story
It is good to see a show written in a very violent genre that is actually character based. Excellently written and acted.
There are so many potential plots because of the depth of multiple characters. This is the founding of an excellent show with longevity built in.
One of the best shows of the last decade if not more. The lead character is a natural for his role, all the supporting characters have all three dimensions. What more can you ask from a creation than this. I almost hope it does not become too successful and then has to follow predictive scripts. In short this is what Spatacus should have been, even Rome did not quite mange to carry of this much depth with an edge.
Haebaragi (2006)
the classic ex offender trying to make goog
I think this film is under rated.
As somebody who has done time in Asia and come out, i get the level of acting the lead role diplays. His body language is classic ex con.
Even the early fight scenes show blocking skills but no retalliation in a way hat took intelligent study. Or an actor that got into his role. Admitedly the daughter role iscast a bit shallow but that not acting error thats direction or script re writes I guess.
Its not subtle but neither was Will Shakespeare.
This film is up with Breath and Chingoo. One of the best films I have seen in quite a while. coming from somebody who watches way way to many films
Watch and judge for yourself.
Somebody has made the effort to adjust the genre.
Continuum (2012)
character led at last
Although this does meet a lot of the clichés of the scifi genre and the cop drama genre the fact that it is character led takes it out of those parameters. There are conflicts through out. Most obvious one which has not be touched yet (only on episode 4) is that what the terrorists are fighting against is something we probably all would. It will be interesting to see how or if this is used in the plot and character development. Another thing that makes this unique is the lack of balance in levels of acting. The female lead has much more depth of emotion. Again I am in the early stages so hopefully this will balance out as the story develops. So far am enjoying watching which is a rare thing these days. Hoping for season 2 already.
