Knockout (2011)
Not good!
Well lets start with the positive. The budget was 9mil. For 9 mil it actually looks decent. Editing cuts are late at times, but simply done which is refreshing from the quick paced clipping action scene cuts we get in the every big budget movie. With what they had to work with I guess its OK.
Stone Cold Steve Austin was the best actor in the flick. Hector the bully did a nice job for what he was working with. The main character is painful to watch in this role. I don't want to bash the kid but a boxer he is not, awkward he is, but in all the wrong ways. The mother is 4 out of 10 and the rest of the cast is blah. The girl the main character falls for has a unique look so she can get a bonus point, blah +1, might like to see her again in a better part to decide.
Script is weak, directing is off, sets look decent, make up not good and effects... there are none. It feels like it's an after school special from the 80's without the warmth or the character development. Somehow the movie did have heart though. I'll attribute it to the main character and Steve Austin standing up for what is right.
My big issue here is that it is a boxing movie and our lead character can't even throw a punch. I mean who the heck did the casting? Did the kids dad pay for the movie? It looks like he just put his xbox remote down and went on set. I really have to stress that the child can literally not throw a normal jab, hook, or any normal looking punch, and has no athletic ability. The main fight looks is like watching 2 tards throw haymakers at each other and for 5 minutes. OK I am harsh but there are so many talented kids out there how could he get the part. He should be cast as an awkward science geek genius that figures out a mathematical way to rob banks. That would be more convincing, but I doubt there will be a future for him in the movie industry.
Like the other guy said this makes Breakin 2 Electric Boogaloo look like Oscar material. :)
The New World (2005)
Wow what a piece of,,,
Not going to even spend the time on words. The movie lacked in everything but cinematography, and even that was ruined by the dodgy editing.
Looks like my review needs to be longer. OK lets talk about the extreme close ups on random faces wtf? The awkwardness of bad actors or extras from the look of it in random places clearly with no direction of any kind on what to do in the shots. It was like the person in the forefront of the scene was supposed to be focused on but being there was no content to what they were doing, you start to focus on whats going on in the background and no one has a clue.
That should be the 10 lines I needed to say don't watch this.
The Way of War (2009)
I can sit through anything,.. but it was hard.
I think Cuba is great and I will still go to see anything with his name on it, but god I hope he picks some decent movies soon. Right from the first seen I am thinking OK.. is this movie serious or some kind of spoof comedy? Bad acting, editing, sound work, effects, etc.. well it was obviously low budget, but I mean like cmon when a guy gets shot don't have him just duck behind a wall, make him get shot ffs.
storyline had potential but it was told all screwy. Dialog had some clever bits but I think you would have to be military personal to catch anything.
all in all I gave this a 1 out of 10 as a complete waste of 2 hours of life that I will never get back. I am surprised I had anything positive to say about it.
So many holes in the plot. This must have been a who you know .. friend of a friend type thing to even get this movie on a disc.
If you ever want to see it do it now because in 6 months you will never hear of this movie again or probably even have access to it.
Ying xiong (2002)
Winner! Masterpiece!
First off Quentin Tarantino only presents the movie and did not have anything to do with directing, writing or filming! Now that that is clear I give this a 10/10 rating. Brilliant. If you like cinematography this is incredible. Every shot must have been beautifully planned and painted out before they put a camera to it. The storyline is timed well. God, I needed a good movie like this, its been such a long time. It has a story and action scenes similar to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with the feeling of "What Dreams May Come" starring Robin Williams. Anyhow if you haven't seen it yet go get a copy and if you cant find one steal one from a friend...its good stuff!
Tears of the Sun (2003)
My personal Favorite
There are few movies that contain this kind of humanity. Although the seals are depicted as order taking goons at the beginning the characters develop and many lessons are found. Honor, Love, Kindness, humbleness, devotion and a short journey to manhood. Honor is what stands out to me. The seals take on a nights of the round table attitude in this movie. We live in a world where we are taught to close our eyes and turn the other way to avoid conflict. Our government oozes this lesson to its soldiers. They truly are told to stand down while human rights are desecrated, sometimes in front of their eyes. We have the strongest army in the world and it is only used for power and seizure. It is nice to see them doing something honorable. Could you imagine if we went into countries to do the right thing and help rather than for $ reasons. Well perhaps we would be poor but at least we would hold our heads high. If we as humans don't stand together for human rights around the world then what is the point to it all. That is what this movie conveys to me. There is still hope for honor among men.
