Kingslayer (2022)

Soulful and thoughtful
19 November 2022
From the director of Wolf and The Necromancer, I was ready for another wild ride of bloodshed and grief in an isolated location, driven by a fantasy story. I certainly got that, and more. Each character distinct, colourful and purposeful. There comes a moment that is beautiful and cuts very deeply, returning later to cut some more, and it's so very effective and resonant. This isn't a huge budget epic of cgi armies battling, like the many countless number of other films in this kind of story, and I'm thankful- it's much more personal, thoughtful and soulful. I love the creativity.

Heavy lies the crown indeed.

Ghost Track (2022)

Thrill ride of the flavour of classic Carpenter in modern supernatural style
15 November 2022
After being charmed by the director's previous work, Dark Vale, I was awaiting the arrival of my copy of this one, Ghost Track.

I certainly wasn't disappointed, in fact it's a step up in quality and strengths. A classic ghost story meets slasher, with modern inflections and stylings, like Halloween meets something like Brightburn.

Some very effective scare sequences, great scoring (Carpenter synths and The Cure esque new wave guitars and bass) which is not only the flavour of nostalgia but serves story purpose.

Well crafted, creative, and most of all fun.

I'm very looking forward to the next from the director, it's only getting better.

Well crafted with depth of commentary

Slick camera work, effective lighting, creative setups.

Awesome to see the legend Tony Todd, strong performances on the whole.

Multiple social commentaries running throughout, woven together well.

A supernatural universe is setup here, in the midst of the very natural and mundane we are living.

Disorienting, disturbing, delightful.

Excellent sound design. The music has gorgeous rumbling bass lines and dissonant drums, reminds me of tippy 90s tunes from the likes of Massive Attack. The colours add richness to the emotions and creation of a drug like state feeling. Thoughtful, visceral and provocative. A colourful and dark trip, I look forward very much to what Michael Fausti will make next.

Beautiful looking and strongly delivered

Beautiful cinematography and strong acting, delivering a touching and well-crafted story. Everything is given time to breathe, as it should be, to match all the silences and unspoken feelings of grief and horror.
