The Last Airbender (2010)
adaptation freaks
My first view of this movie was as horrible as top reviews, I didn't even finish it, and I gave it one star. But not for the same reason since I never saw the so called original cartoon. Which lead me to talk about what really drove me to write this review. A work of art should not be judged by the concept of adaptation. I may argue that every work of literature is somehow an adaptation based on heidgerian hermeneutics. This should lead to that every judgment based on adaptation is invalid, specially when you have a different medium used. Najeeb mahfooth, the novilist recognized that. As much as he was a genius in writing novels, he was also at least a great writer for movies. Any movie written by him, you can be sure is great. Still he never wrote any movie adapting his novels. You may think that he couldn't cut his babies to little pieces for the big screen, which is a reasonable explanation. But I think deeply he recognized that movies are a different medium where the director is mostly the main man who make the movie according to his own vision. I still didn't watch the cartoon but I can argue that it was a poor adaptation for Moses story in the Bible, but this argument would be false based on the introduction I made. In my second view of the movie I was able to finish it and I thought it was not as horrible as I thought. But it's still the worst Shyamalan movie in my book. The main problems I have are with casting and ending. As others mentioned, the main character didn't fit in the leader role in the story. The white hair girl too. The ending wasn't satisfying as climax, it only brought the poor comparison to the biblical story. But that should not be the problem according to my rules, maybe I will be free from the biblical reference in my third view, but I still doubt that would change my mind, the movie was supposed to have sequels but still you need to have a satisfying ending for each one, and the main character's lack of charisma didn't help.
Side Effects (2013)
Arabian nights
Remind me of a section in Arabian nights where a woman and a man challenging each other about whose more cunning, women or men, by telling stories to prove their points. It's probably mystic quencidence that Arabic music is played in the middle and end of the movie. I remember the director used Arabic music in Ocean 12. Another probably mysic quencidence, c Z Jones acted in Arabian night movie early in her career.
The Ninth Gate (1999)
in plain sight indeed, who did u say the devil was?
U won't like this theory, might break your hearts, even boys, but it make sense, no, the devil wasn't the girl, it will b Corso. Yes, he isn't the devil in the movie, he will be after he cross the nineth gate. As in the starting credits who watch the movie cross the gates until the light of the final one. When the guy who hired Corso made the ritual he clearly didn't expect to meet the devil but 2 b him, he thought the fire won't hurt him. Of course Polansky is working from a Christian background, but the devil in Quran can b any Jenn or man, who also can be good if they choose. I also don't understand the Christian sensibility that make Corsos action of killing the black man in self defense as evil, if he didn't finish him, he may come after them and kill them. Nor do I understand his attempt to save the widows life as good, but the girl preventing him from doing so as evil that confirms she's the devil, after all the widow was the one who gave the black guard the order 2 kill them. Johnny Depp in the dvds interviews came close to reveal it. He said u hate Corso at the start of the movie then u start to like him gradually then u hate him again at the end. That's I think because when he enter the ninth gate, he will be the devil.
Extinction: Patient Zero (2014)
rubbish
the acting is terrible, they really act, and they show it by screaming worse than Adele. the script is extremely stupid, i can't believe the writer can be older than 8 yrs. he or she show you clearly what tricks he's using to dramatize the script. this is amateurish, but the interesting theme and the start like the movie saw may trick a lot of people to waste their time on this, we seem to have only 52 people who rated this, thank god, but we need to save as many lives as possible from this virus of stupidity that could infect three quarters of mankind.
Before I Fall (2017)
the Sisyphus genre
it seems the reviewers discovered a new genre that i might just call Sisyphus, it's about heroes living the same day over and over again. i didn't read all reviews, but i may add movies like Vincenzo Natali's haunter or to some degree vanilla sky. it can refer us to Albert Camus' Sisyphus, hence to existentialism. this movie come close to greatness in addressing the issue in the middle of it, when the hereon start to rebel. and here i must mention the interesting performance by the actress that transformed remarkably both in looks and acting. unfortunately in the end, the authors went to the orthodox Christian answer, while if they read Soren Kierkegaard they might find a more interesting Christian existentialist open ending
Becoming Bond (2017)
what the hell is that!
it's a new creature in the world of films, it's neither a documentary nor a movie, and it's full of farts, realistic ones since this is kind of a documentary, i'm south park fan, but this wasn't funny neither necessary, but i'm sure billions of idiots out there might find it funny. i was dying to know why this guy refused to make bond, i'm still interested, but don't worry i'm not going to spoil it for you because i don't know, i couldn't go through the farts scene, i'm sure i can easily know by searching the net, but this piece of freaking garbage doc. killed it for me
HyperNormalisation (2016)
propaganda but true
this is probably a Saudi propaganda to get rid of Bashar Asad, but that doesn't mean its false. the Asad family is a major link between terrorist networks both Shia and communist since the early 1970s. the documentary fail to mention that Palestinian Marxist organizations led by Christians and strongly connected to KGB and Syria hijacked planes and conducted terrorist acts in Europe in the early 1970s. but that doesn't mean that Libya wasn't connected to terrorist groups, specially Abu Nedhal. the documentary wasn't accurate on this Libyan point. and the jasmine revolution or Arab spring in Tunisia was before the occupy movement, and didn't learn anything from it. important factors for it that the documentary failed to mention are cell phone messaging and Wikileaks on Tunisian officials. otherwise the film was interesting with some new info even for an old Arab like me.
The Bye Bye Man (2017)
finally, a horror movie that isn't bad
i think it was since the end of the saw movies that i lost any hope in finding a horror movie that isn't bad. the title made me hesitate to watch this movie, i thought it was in the horror comedy genre, which i believe is total rubbish that was invented, maybe by the guy who made the evil dead, which is basically a genre of failure horror makers, when they realize how bad and hilarious their movies are, they start to pretend that it was intentional comedy. it's common sense that you can't have horror and comedy at the same time, but we live in a world where a man can win weight lifting competition for women. i was brave enough to look at this movie again to find out that it doesn't have comedy as part of its genre. as expected, nothing new here, you know you saw most things before unless you're a millennial, but some how it's effective, still creepy and can be terrifying sometimes. the director is really talented with a very interesting cast, they just needed an original script.
Split (2016)
back? maybe for the masses
maybe i should stop hoping that shyamalan and Tarantino will come back, they already offered many master pieces and i need to stop being greedy. but this movie really gave me hope that shyamalan will even bypass himself, for a moment i had one of my fetish dreams that i will see one of Colin Wilson's master pieces on the screen. but my hopes were crashed in the end. a major twist in the end that no one i red seem to notice is that for a moment you would think that the whole movie was a fantasy in the abused kidnapped girl's head, and actually all the personalities were her. no one for sure would hope for such a lame end, but at least it would have made me rethink more about the movie rather than the plain end. like unbreakable, the movie fall into shyamalan obsession with 9/11, yes even before it happened! but it still lack the depth of unbreakable, signs, lady in water, the happening, or even after earth!
