A Year in the Life (1986)
A True Gem of a Show - Highest Quality
I agree that this was a simply wonderful, heartwarming and intelligently written show. Richard Kiley was at his best. How it lasted only one season just shows that networks care more about shows appealing to a mass audience -- just witness the endless reality TV shows on now.
If anyone has tapes of this show I would TOO love to see it again. I had taped a few episodes when it aired but my NO CLUTTER sister tossed them when she "helped" me move -- it was like a free-for-all with stuff leaving I didn't even know what was going out the door.
Another quality show that came and went quickly and starred "Early Edition's" dreamboat Kyle Chandler was "Homefront."
Humoresque (1946)
Not a great film
I just saw this film for the first time on Turner Classic Movie channel. I had never heard of it but when I saw the main stars; John Garfield and Joan Crawford I thought it must be fantastic.
WRONG -- Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide gives this movie 3 1/2 stars and I can't see why. I have seen 3 John Garfield movies in the past month on TCM and "The Postman Always Rings Twice" is still my favorite. I had always heard what a great actor he was. After seeing this film I feel he always played the tough, scrappy guy with a permanent chip on his shoulder whether playing the violin or shooting at the enemy in war. I have seen more Joan Crawford films and this, contrary to what I have read on IMDb in comments and Leonard Maltin's guide is NOT her best film. I thought the plot was stupid and saw no chemistry between her and John Garfield and why does she do what she does at the end?? She was supposedly a strong, independent woman but still could not share her man with his audiences. That is ridiculous. Give me "Mildred Pierce," any day. I still have yet to see "Body and Soul," so the jury is out for me as far as John Garfield is concerned. You want to see a woman who is strong, desperate and controlling see "Leave Her to Heaven." Gene Tierney gives a riveting performance in this film and it is SO MUCH BETTER than "Humoresque." And no matter how much soft focus camera they used on Crawford she was not very attractive, striking but not pretty. Take a look at Gene Tierney, Hedy Lamarr or Ava Gardner if you want to see beautiful actresses of the 30's and 40's.
