Oldboy (2013)
Ignore the haters
I do not understand the low rating of this film. Yes it's over the top, and yes it's almost comical in some of its delivery; however, it is also brilliant in its own way. Josh Brolin is genius, Elizabeth Olsen is gorgeous and brilliant, and finally Sharlto Copley is superbly diabolical.
I am not a great of Spike Lee, but I found this film wildly entertaining. I cannot compare it to the original, as I have not seen it yet (although its on my list) but I truly enjoyed it. Ignore the haters, which let me say I am extremely tired of people complaining about American remakes of foreign films.
I only speak English and honestly, watching a movie with subtitles really lessens the experience. So for everyone out there that thinks watching foreign films somehow makes them intellectually and morally superior – it doesn't.
Definitely worth the watch, and much more deserving of a much higher rating (I gave it a 9).
Project X (2012)
Epic
I have to agree with some others, that this movie is pure entertainment from beginning to end. It is hilariously funny and makes movies like Superbad look like a Disney film. This movie takes the whole notion of "nerd gets popular" to a new level. The actors are mostly new faces, but they do a great job.
There are so many other really awful movies, most of them starring anyone from the American Pie movies, that a movie like this deserves attention and praise. Don't go see mindless comedies and expect something else, if you do that you don't deserve the right to review the movie.
Rubber (2010)
The little things
I have to agree, that this movie is completely random. But that is what makes it so clever. Not only does the tire kill people, but he watches Yoga, the nature channel, and NASCAR.
You can't simply ignore this film because it of its ridiculousness. What makes it do brilliant is that is makes absolutely no sense. Everything happens for no reason, but that doesn't make it contrived. There is a scene where the tire comes to the realization that he is, indeed, a tire. Imagine if you were on a killing spree and realized you were a tire.
I know, I know, it sounds ludicrous, and it is. But that's what makes Rubber so much fun. I've seen too many movies to count and this one is almost completely original. Even the minor characters are important, and ridiculous. If you want a comedy, that offers a little horror, this is just for you. Don't take it too seriously – or you will miss the point.
The Devil Inside (2012)
Superb
First, I have to agree with the other positive reviews. You have to like this style of film, if you don't then then you shouldn't have gone to see it in the first place.
Second, I am a fan of all three PA movies - but I actually found this one better. The look and feel is somehow more believable. The acting is far above anything I expected, and even the editing and direction were quite for what this film is.
If you enjoy this type of film, it is easily as good as any that came before it. Lots of tension, quite a few good surprises, and of course a disappointing ending. But I supposed one that gives the audience something to consider on their way home.
Bitter Feast (2010)
An 8, only for the budget
First, I am a huge fan on Kitchen Nightmares, Hell's Kitchen, etc. I also consider myself quite the food snob. I love to cook, but would never, ever, consider doing it as a career.
All of that said, this movie is extremely clever. Not terribly original from a revenge and torture perspective, but I love the "challenges".
The low budget nature of the film makes it unlikely to ever get a major viewing; however, anyone that is a fan of food and Gordon Ramsey will truly enjoy this film.
Final thought, for a cost conscious film, the acting is actually quite good.
Red State (2011)
Pure garbage
What's the point of a poorly directed, poorly acted, low budget film from a director that really has no decent films to his credit. The script is crap, the direction is worse, and John Goodman obviously needs to fire his agent.
If anything, this movie shows the belligerence of the government and the abuse of mass media by another director who thinks his opinion of the world is of interest to others. There's no good or evil, just idiocy at every turn. Is there even a plot here?
If you want to watch a horror movie, go find one. This isn't horror or action, it's crap and I've seen better B movies with better plots that didn't attempt to pass on a message that I, for one, have no interest in.
Cowboys & Aliens (2011)
OK, all the negative reviewers just didn't get it...
I am sick of people going to a movie like this and expecting Oscar caliber performances and stories that rival Schindler's List.
Get a grip, this is a mindless action film that combines cowboys and aliens. It was a great film, it wasn't boring, and the action was great.
If you want to go watch some sob story about vampires and their girlfriends go right ahead - that wasn't this movie. It had some good humor, lots of explosions, and very little sap. Well cast, well acted (for what the movie is), and well done.
Ignore the haters and go see this movie! Unless you prefer movies about teen girls and vampires - then skip it.
Kick-Ass (2010)
Kick Ass Does Kick Some Ass
I don't want to ruin this for anyone - but it's not what you expect. It's hilariously funny in a very wrong way that you have to see.
Chloe Moretz makes this movie everything it is, the rest of the cast could not even be in the movie and it would still rock. In fact, she makes this movie a 10. Go see it or you'll be sorry. It's slick, sick, and funny - it's got everything you need in a movie. Chloe Moretz's character is wickedly awesome and makes you eager for a sequel.
Even Cage, who's career is pretty much over, was decent in this movie. You simply have to see it - I won't tell you what it's about - just go see it!
Order of Chaos (2010)
I don't get the reviews
Yes, this is a low budget film with little dialog. Milo Ventimiglia is an underrated but extremely talented actor and I think he made the film. If you haven't seen it yet, watch Pathology.
Rhys Coiro was adequate - but as for the American Psycho reference he is no Christian Bale and this is no American Psycho. That particular film is pure brilliance, whereas this is just an interesting character study. If I am engrossed in enough in a film that I can't stop watching and get completely wrapped in the main character I consider it a good film.
I did and this is, I liked the music - both the style of the music and the use in the film. I actually believe that in this movie less dialog was better, but I didn't find it completely predictable - I wasn't really sure what was going to happen at the end. I might have ended it differently or perhaps had more twists but overall I thought it was a solid film with solid acting. It's worth the 90 minutes of your time.
Avatar (2009)
Best film ever made
10 Stars doesn't even begin to do this film justice. Saying that this is the singularly most stunning film I have ever seen doesn't do it justice. As I told my wife this movie makes Alien, Titanic, and Terminator look like film school projects.
I have seen many many movies and rarely choose to comment. To say anything about the content of this film would only take away from the experience.
I will say that not only do you HAVE to see this film, you should really see it in IMAX. I am going to see it again this weekend, and can't wait. I would have sat through it repeatedly, it was that good. There are NO boring moments - and few that aren't simply breathtaking. DON'T MISS THIS MOVIE - and DON'T BUY I SODA - I did and had to miss precious minutes of the film running to the restroom.
To summarize:
Excellent Direction, Acting, and the finest CGI I have ever seen.
Stranded (2001)
A very quick review
Don't listen the haters. Although I think Gallo is a terrible actor and about as annoying as Gilbert Godfried (sp?) this is actually a very good film.
I'm guessing that some voices were dubbed and some not, hard to tell from the version I caught on Showtime. Without spoiling too much, this movie pretty much hits it all - the life / death choice dilemma, aliens, life on other planets, some pretty great sci-fi mixed with a decent drama.
Don't let any of the negatives put you off - and don't stop watching it because the start is slow. Once it picks up you'll be very glad you kept watching.
Not Without My Daughter (1991)
Good Film
I'm sorry that some people feel that a true story is some sort of Iran bashing. I'm also sorry that so many middle eastern countries are primitive and have little respect for women or their right to equality.
Sally Field did a great job in this movie, and yes since it's a true story - it actually happened - how about that? Yes it made me hate Moody and his family - and why not it portrayed their evil. And evil is exactly what they were so the movie did exactly what it should have. I think this movie is another great insight as to what goes on in the middle east and certainly doesn't deserve any of the criticism found in these forums.
The Strangers (2008)
Really not a total waste of time
OK, so no - I didn't like this movie enough to comment on it, but I read a 1 star review and thought I'd throw in my $.02 US.
I will defend Liv Tyler, she is simply awesome - and for that fact I gave this movie a 5 - it's all Liv 5, without her would have been a 2 or a 3.
I got a few cheap scares out of it, but yes the main characters act like morons - they do stupid things like everyone in every other slasher / horror flick.
It was definitely a movie worth a rental once you've rented everything else and if you like Liv. If you don't - you may not want to bother.
Babylon A.D. (2008)
6.1 on opening day??????
People please, this was one of - if not the worst movie I have seen in a theater all year. Let's start with the plot, wait was there one? If there was I missed it, something about a girl and some magical babies or something.
Was there a director? I don't know - but if there was he or she is a talentless hack that should go back to film school. I guess this was supposed to be an action movie, but the action sequences were pathetic. They were either poorly shot or poorly edited, or maybe both. The fight scenes were so badly choreographed (sp?) that it was impossible to tell who was fighting who.
Was there script? I guess because the terrible and pointless dialog came from somewhere, and I mean this was bad. Vin Diesel is not the greatest actor on the planet, but he certainly entertains (usually) and he deserved a better movie then this.
When I look at my watch 380 times during a 90 minute movie - that's not a good sign. Really, save your money and go see something that doesn't stink, if I see something worth seeing I'll let you know.
Step Brothers (2008)
Ignore any negative comments
Drop what you're doing right now and go see this movie! If you don't or didn't like this movie, then you don't get it. This isn't some Oscar bound tear jerker. This isn't some pseudo intellectual piece of crap by the latest college dropout turned director.
This is brilliant adolescent humor at its best. The team has another hit that rivals Taladega Nights in both its comedy and commentary on everything that's wrong with adults today.
If you want to see some lame low budget Cannes film festival winner about young transvestites in love, this ain't your movie (and there's probably something really wrong with you anyway so stay out of my local theater).
Broken (2006)
Better then it looks
I started watching this movie because I read a review of another film that made mention of it. The first 15 minutes made me really want to turn it off, it was that bad.
What I will say is that if you can look past the lackluster acting performances - and you can stick with this film I will say you will eventually find yourself taken with the characters. I won't ruin the movie with spoilers, but I will say that as the movie moves on you will connect with all of the main characters.
The gore is not too over the top and the scenes of violence, there are several, work and aren't there just for the sake of violence. Give this a look if you enjoy the genre, and don't give up on the film - it's worth watching until the end.
88 Minutes (2007)
A True Disappointment
Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of Al Pacingo. Before seeing 88 Minutes, I would could have said I never saw a bad Pacino film. To quote a much beloved critic "It Stinks".
The direction is awful, the script terrible, and the acting (except for Pacino) is what you'd expect from Alicia Witt and Leelee Sobieski -which is not much. Sure, it keeps you guessing - but honestly after the first 10 minutes I don't think you'll care. The only good part of the movie - is that it eventually ends.
William Forsythe does expertly revisit his role from Duece Bigalow - at least I assume that's what he was doing. Save your money and your time - as this is a total waste of both.
Carver (2008)
What movie were you people watching?
I'm sorry, but what movie were the other reviewers watching, because the Carver I watched was absolutely one of the worst movies I think I've ever seen - and I've watched some pretty bad stuff.
Let's start with the acting - it stinks. There's no "up and comers" or "undiscovered talent" here. There's a bunch of people who can't act being directed by someone who can't direct.
The violence is about the only high point of this movie; which is a pretty sad statement. I enjoy horror, I even really liked some campy stuff like House of 1000 Corpses and Cabin Fever - but this is neither of those movies.
Even if the budget for this movie was $100 - it doesn't excuse this utter waste of time. I'm sorry - I don't get what the other reviewers are thinking. I paid nothing to watch this movie and I still feel ripped off - I want the hour and a half of my life I wasted watching this back.
Primal (2007)
Terrible
I have to agree with the other reviewer, I would give this "movie" a negative rating if it were an option.
I don't even want to waste my time writing 10 lines, but I want to save others from this trash.
The acting is HORRIBLE, the production quality is ABYSMAL, the direction could have been done better by my 12 year old, and I've seen scarier costumes on kids at Haloween.
I said I hated Carver, well that movie is an academy award winner compared this straight to video crap.
Do not rent this thinking it will be fun or entertaining - it ain't.
Rambo (2008)
What a great movie!
I'll start by admitting, I am a huge Sly fan - but you don't have to be to enjoy this movie.
The plot is very simple, and the action is simply amazing. It's gory, it's violent, but it's also just amazing to watch. What I liked most about this movie (and the most recent Rocky title) is that Stallone writes, directs, and stars in a film that entertains.
I would defy anyone who knocks his age to look and act as good as this guy when they're 60 years old. Go see it, because you're not likely to see another entry in this series.
Oh, and one more thing, I don't know if the depiction of what goes on in Burma is accurate - but if true - it's absolutely horrible.
Hostel: Part II (2007)
Does not disappoint
Look, if you didn't like this installment - you probably didn't like the original. If neither Hostel scared you, you live under a rock and can't see the possibility that this could happen. People (especially rich Americans) are SICK - look at Paris Hilton if you don't believe me. She would pay money to kill someone if she heard it was "hot".
Yes, Bijou Phillips and Heather Matarazzo both suck but they certainly don't ruin an excellent Roth film. I had no expectations - and I loved it. It was violent and clever and to me a great sequel. Lauren German is amazing, and incredibly nice to look at without being typical Hollywood bimbo eye candy.
I don't EVER comment on movies here - in fact this is my first. I am only commenting because a 5.6 is RIDICULOUS and reflects only the intelligence of the viewing audience, not the quality of this film. The suspense and gore are just right, the ending is really two pronged. One extremely hard to watch - and one a little cheesy, but if you paid attention in Hostel you'll get it. If you didn't like this sequel then you should go watch some boring foreign film and praise yourself for your amazing intellect.
If you want to be entertained, and you enjoy the Tarantino / Roth combo go see it - you won't be sorry.
